🏀 Recruiting Smikle makes it official, signs with Tulsa

6-foot-9 and 230-pound big man Ian Smikle, who committed to Tulsa a month ago, signed his letter of intent with TU on the first day of the early basketball signing period. He chose the Hurricane over offers from Seton Hall, Jacksonville, Sam Houston State and others.

📝 Larry Lewis RECAP: Defense & rebounding help Tulsa get past UCA, 70-53

With freshmen guards P.J. Haggerty and Tyshawn Archie, along with senior guard Cobe Williams leading the way for Tulsa, while sharing point guard duties, the season opener was a success. The guard trio, along with sophomore wing Isaiah Barnes, combined for 47 points while all scoring in double figures to lead TU to a 70-53 victory over Central Arkansas Monday night in front of 2,770 fans at the Reynolds Center.

Game thoughts Central Arkansas

We can work with that. It was fun to hear the cheering at the end. Been awhile.

We have a long way to go, but this team has some dudes who can play. Cobe is the most fun player we’ve had in awhile. Haggerty just needs to play more. I really like Reed and Garcia. And Barnes is nice. And Archie was a steal.

Too many turnovers. Defensive rebounding had to improve. But this could be way worse and it has been.

I don’t like what they did to student section. And I like that the idiot bar stool guy thought that was a good turnout.

Where do we go from here?

From a competitive standpoint, we haven't been this deficient since 2002, Keith Burns' final season. We don't look like a contender in the group of leftovers.

College football has changed tremendously since then. Survival of the fittest prevails more than ever. I don't know how TU sizes up with NIL funds, but I have a feeling we would know more if we were amassing a big warchest.

I do well to buy season tickets and make a modest donation to the Champions Fund. I don't know much about how to rebuild the program and I'm only on campus to go to the games. I'm basically asking for ideas and opinions.

What does TU need to do to become competitive in football and men's basketball again? Can we do it? Do we have the will to do it? Do we have the means?

📝 Larry Lewis New-look TU basketball gets started on Monday

Could Cobe Williams and Keaston Willis go down as one of the great guard combinations in TU history, along with the likes of Steve Harris and Ricky Ross? Although Tulsa will only get one year of Cobe and Keaston, it could be a really memorable one. Fans have already gotten a glimpse of the explosive Williams. They will have to wait a couple more weeks or so to see Willis. But it will be worth the wait.

Rick Dickson

Rant time while watching one of the most embarrassing losses in recent memory:

The football coaches Rick Dickson hired during his tenure as AD at Tulane (Bob Toledo, Mark Hutson and Curtis Johnson) and had a combined record of 30-102 (.227). Tulane was one of the absolute worst programs in the country during his tenure. After Dickson left Tulane in 2015/2016, his successor (Troy Dannen) immediately hired Willie Fritz and I think we all know how that has worked out for them.

Dickson’s first big decision during his second stint as AD here was to hire a 62 year old retread HC in Wilson who had middling success during his only other head coaching stint at Indiana and ultimately ended up with a 26-47 overall record there before being fired. Wilson had success as co-OC at Ohio State, but that was an offense loaded with 5-star talent. To make matters worse, Dickson passed on hiring GJ Kinne, who’s an alum who expressed interest in the job and who now has more wins at TXST than they had all of last season and has put together the best recruiting class in TXST history.

Dickson is nearly 70 and fortunately his contract is up in 2024 but I pray he retires and we do not try to extend him. Maybe Wilson will surprise me and turn things around next season but I have zero faith that’ll happen based on Dickson’s track record of head coaching hires. I agree that it was time to move on from Montgomery, but at least he made the most of his low-ranked recruiting classes (produced 2 first-round picks) and had us in bowl contention nearly every season he was here. There’s a very good chance Dickson just set us back years with this hire. Future looks extremely bleak right now.
