Went to lunch at Bill's Jumbo Burgers and this dawned on me as a good topic. As a rule, I'm telling you up front these should be locally owned/operated places and generally not chains, as opposed to McDonald's and Red Robin. I'm looking for local places . . . you can get that kind of chain stuff anywhere. Plus, if you post it I'll make fun of you.

My list:
1) Bill's Jumbo Burgers; Xanthus and Admiral. Funky little wooden building. Weird fundamentalist stuff on the walls. Really damn good. Has always been really damn good.
2) Weber's; Brookside. This place doesn't get enough love. Root beer is really the draw (get the root beer freeze). The comination of great root beer and burgers makes it #2.
3) JJ's; 6th and Peoria. Weird as hell. Overpriced. Doesn't keep normal hours. Don't call it a hamburger, whatever you do. Gourmet ribeye burgers are great.
4) Claude's; Brookside. They finally got rid of the "we grind our own meat" sign a few years back. Always got a laugh out of that since they are across the street from a funeral home. Anywho, nothin' wrong with this place at all. Good prices, too. Got food poisoning there once, so it's lower on my list than the quality indicates.
5) (My curveball) The Mediterranean burger at Wild Fork; feta and other good Greek stuff on pita. I thought my lady was nuts when ordered this. Now I live for it.
6) Green bean burger at Brother's Houlighan; weird, but strangely wonderful.
7) Ron's. Ron's used to be an easy #1. But they moved in around the corner from me and I've become a regular. I've decided that their frito chili pie and chicken are better than their burgers. Their burgers are very good, but I'm not sure they are as good as they used to be.

There are others, but I must stop or I'll have to eat something.

FWIW, I'm not ranking the McNellie's burger because I think it's the most overrated thing in this town since Hanson. Nice burger, not remotely worth the hysteria on Wednesday nights.

I gotta say I have to go with a good Bacon Cheeseburger from Braums but it has to be the Braums at 27th and Harvard. Outside of that I'd have to venture to Burgers N More in Sapulpa.

Lotta Burger is still damn good but shrinking--like at W23rd and Jackson.

Braum's may not be the best but is certainly the best value and has done a lot for/to me.

The very best burger places have real french fries, not those plasticized things so common now.

According to my diet, I have lived 20 years past my life expectancy.

Does anyone remember the old hamburger stands that used to be around Tulsa? They were probably left over from the 1940s or 50s and had a grill and a counter. The one that was still in business in the 1970s was Fred's on the east side of Harvard south of 11th street. It probably is long gone by now. They had some great burgers, back in the day.

Another place with a great hamburger is The Burger House on West Edison & around W.41st St.

They grill their onions into the meat for extra flavor...

P.S. Mrs. Sepp used to work there during her high school days while attending "Old" Central High School downtown...

Hank's is still there, had one on Saturday. Good burger. I was sad to see that Wings on admiral closed. They were Damn good. I also like Bill's. Ron's sausage chili cheeseburger with lots onions is my favorite.

Has anyone eaten at Ty's Hamburgers over at approx 16th and Harvard? They've been there for a long time. I never seem to be in the TU area anymore except to attend games so I've never tried it, but I've always been curious about them. I figure they must be pretty good to have stayed in business for so long.

I like Claud's a lot, Ron's not so much. The Ron's burgers they sell at the stadium are really disappointing.

Back in my early post-TU days, there was a place on about 4th and Lewis called Margie's, which made tremendous burgers and real french fries. I guess they are long gone by now.

Ty's is pretty good. It's really popular with some folks. They play Faux News and, last time I was there, my buddy got a hair in his fries. It's not exactly the top of my list.

Brownie's is also an institution.

Brownie's, Ron's, and Weber's are probably my top three. I also dig a good Backyard Burger.

Backyard Burger is a chain. Can't list it!

I noticed that yesterday when I was getting ready to pull in there for a burger. I had to settle for a turkey, bacon, & guac at Quizno's.

Let me first say that I LOVE a good burger. Tulsa is a great place to be for burger connoisseurs. For the most part, if you want a truly awesome burger, you need to travel north of 41st street.

THE BEST:

- Arnold's Old-fashioned Burgers (CAN'T BELIEVE THIS HASN'T BEEN MENTIONED), 1722 W. 51st St.

- Hank's Hamburgers, 8933 East Admiral Place

- Ted's Charburgers, corner of 29th West Avenue and Edison Street

- The Burger House, 4020 W. Edison St.

- Bill's Jumbo Burgers, 2002 E Admiral Blvd

- Claud's Hamburgers, 3834 S Peoria Ave

- Freddie's Hamburgers, 802 S Lewis Ave

- Brownie's Hamburger Stand, 2130 S Harvard Ave

- Ralph’s Fish & Burger Shack, 1801 N. Lewis Ave.

- Harden's Hamburgers, 432 South Sheridan

- Weber's Root Beer

- Ron's Hamburgers

GOOD "FAST-FOOD" STYLE BURGERS:

- Braum's 1/3 lb Bacon Cheeseburger

- The Original Lot-a-Burger on Charles Page Blvd.

It has been awhile since I lived in Tulsa (25 plus years). The old standbys where I try to grab a burger on most visits: Brownies, Ron's or Lot-a-burger.

In the NE a What-a-burger or Sonic would be a welcome sight.

Freddie's is the one I couldn't remember. THat place could make an argument as the best. I still say it's Bill's Jumbo Burgers, though.

OMG. a picture of Hank's -- overwhelmed with nostalgia -- I need to lie down.

It's gone now, but Bundy Burger on the West Side on 33rd W Ave was hands down the best burgers in Tulsa. When it comes to burgers, all that matters is how old the grill they are cooked on is.

If any of you are ever traveling out on the East Coast, try Five Guys Burger and Fries. The fries are real, they slice the potato up right in front of you. I can feed my family on 4 small burgers, one large Fry and three drinks for under $25. It's a mini-chain, but the best burgers I've had since I moved out here.

Bundy's was great - that old man could make a burger! I was very sad when he died and the restaurant just kind of collapsed.

I'm with Harmon - his list is prett good. Arnold's is great and has been around since Bundy's was still open - freddies is really good too - but the new one on 11th between memorial and mingo isn't fantastic.

What's the name of the old drive-in right across from Clinton Middle School? Also the one right off 244 and Utica?

McNellies = overrated
kampai sliders = overrated (unless it's Tuesday and they're $1)
full moon burgers or sliders = same same

BruHaus the old Smitty's the old Blue Rose has a decent burger...

And even though it's become more and more disgusting at every location across town, I still love Goldies.

Is cluades the one where you get a playing card for your order? I like htat lace too...

TUTypical

You are talking about Crow's across from Clinton Middle! Man, I went there every day after school to get a bag of fries and a 4 pack of Now N' Laters. Even when I went on to Webster, we'd go there for lunch at least once a week.

That would have to be Judy Burger. Man what a dish! But then she did break my heart when she wouldn't go out with me in 10th grade.

There is now a Freddies on 11th over by Mingo Creek. We go there sometimes because it is close to the office. It is tasty.

I remember having good burgers at Goldie's, but that was about 30 years ago.

That's it!

McCutchens on the westside was pretty good for a while also. But nothing compared to bundy's imo.

I remember McCutchens, it really fell off after a few years.

It's off the topic of burgers, but do you remember the Hungry Pelican on 33rd just south of the RR tracks? My parents and I spent a few dinners there.

mccutchens really wasn't good for long, was it. I think it was only around for a year or three...

Former TU RB Brett White's family own a Tastee Freeze (yeah I know it was stated no chain's but since Braum's and Goldie's have been mentioned thought I'd throw this one out) just east of Peoria at 44th St. North. They made a great fried hamburger and the price was low. I haven't ate there in years but talked a few weeks ago to someone that did and they said it was still very good.

I got tired of reading posts, so I just threw in the one I like best. I'd blame it on laziness, but really it has more to do with a 13 month old terror monopolizing my life!

Have you ever had a burger at Red Robin? Its a chain, but apparently well liked by some.

hamburger reviews

I agree that most of the good burger joints are north of 41st (and west of the river in many cases). But there are a couple of places to get a good burger in South Tulsa that are not chains.

Mack's Grill at the Plaza on 81st & Lewis serves a great Angus burger and has a full bar as well. Karl's Famous Burgers at the strip mall east of 91st and Deleware is good and more of a traditional burger joint.

Other than that, it's pretty much a cultural wasteland, between ORU, the Creek Casino and El Wal Marto.
