You hope he would be but the AAC competition is a lot better than the NEC
Yeah, that's what I expect. Based on his stats, he was more of a 3 pt specialist for FDU, more than half his baskets were 3pt. Other than 3 pt %, his stats were pretty pedestrian at FDU. I haven't watched his game at all, just looking at stats, but assuming some regression against better competition, his stats don't seem to suggest a lot of other areas of major contribution beyond a role player. His 2 pt FG % was high, maybe he's a good shooter if he gets turned loose closer to the basket?

I also always worry a bit about the guy who was the best player on a bad team. What will he do when he has better guys around him?

Somebody suggested Garcia would never be any more than a role player when he committed last year, and that he wouldn't ever get more than 15 min a game or something . We'll see.

He is ok with his assists and rebounding. He got what would have been the second most blocks on our roster. He was their leading scorer. I don't see him being limited in minutes or playing only as a role player. As I said earlier, we'll see.

Well, I hope we get him and that you're right! Either way, he'll be an upgrade.

Brandon Kurtz is the only big time, big man recruit in the past 30 years.

All the others were either shorter post guys or home grown.

Yes , we had Magnay and Igbanu both as freshmen. I mentioned at the time we could see both all-conference as Seniors and an NCAA berth for sure. Girlfriend cost us a bid or two.

This brings up another question, why have our recent coaches been unwilling to have 2 big men in at the same time? We would have never seen Magnay and Igbanu playing together. I would like to see two big men in at a time on occasion so one can alter shots and the other rebound.

Maybe I'm totally wrong but I feel like we've had a run of coaches in both BB and FB that are more focused on playing their way than winning. I'm thinking dougie's tantrum zone Ds or pretty much ever offensive play under Monty and Frank and BB. I get the sense that Konkol might be more willing to think outside the box if it could bring some wins with the team we have.

Carlous wasn't a role player on our team last year, regrettably. His stats are better than Carlous' across the board.
Agree. I would expect him to be a major contributor. Top 7 in the rotation. Look at his stats against Illinois. The kid can play.

Adjusting on a 40 minute basis, the FDU guy shot more and scored more than Carlous and was a way better FT shooter (who isn't) and 3PT shooter but otherwise their stats are very similar. Carlous averaged a little more RB and a little better 2PT%, FDU guy a little more assists but his assists weren't meaningful, that wasn't his game. Blocks are basically the same. The FDU guy can shoot FTs and 3PTs, otherwise their stats would be hard to tell apart.

Agree that Carlous wasn't a role player but that wasn't because of his skill set. Maybe my point isn't that the FDU guy will be a role player but that he should be a role player.

Konkol mentioned that he thought a lot about having Reed and Garcia in at the same time but I'm not sure he ever pulled the trigger. He was worried about defensive man coverage on the perimeter but he could play zone while both are in........duh.........

You just said he was an upgrade. Now you contradict yourself because you wanted to prove me wrong. So you went on a per minute basis, to see if that worked to your advantage. Pick one or the other. I'm sure now you will say slight upgrade. Whatever.

I already knew the stats evened out a bit and Carlous went ahead on rebounds, on a per minute basis. You aren't telling me anything new. He is an upgrade, bless your heart.

You have emotional problems.
You've attacked me personally on approximately 4 different occasions, and you think I have emotional problems. That's ok, you are persona non grata to me now, and I won't be responding to you anymore. Not worth the time or the effort.

He started the season with both starting.

Problem with both Reed and Garcia in at the same time is who does Konkol sub in to give one of both of them a rest....

Ultimately, it’s viewed as an antiquated style of play. It’s like asking Coach Wilson why he doesnt run more wishbone.

As I said before our best player was poached…. It’s time to start playing money ball with these free agents.

I was scared every time Carlous touched the ball. That hasn’t happened to me with very many starters. A couple of others worry me too with their ball handling. A lost art in the U. S. Turnovers lose games.

I contributed to Hurricane Impact. I wish I had half a billion and graduated from TU. I could give a million a year to my favorite sport. I didn’t graduate here but it became my school to support many years ago.

Not sure that has much to do with what I said. The concept isn’t about raising more money to compete with your peers. It’s about accepting the limitations that an unfair game presents to your organization, and using outside the box thinking rather than traditional talent evaluation to put together a team that can compete with organizations who have much larger bankrolls.

We can always count on you for a solution not based on reality, and complaints.
My solution is more based on realism than any I’ve seen so far. The portal, as much as it makes things difficult on a program like ours, does provide us with an opportunity. We now have the opportunity to acquire players strategically who are overlooked or undervalued.

In moneyball they use analytics to do that. It’s probably what TU needs to start doing in greater detail. I’m not talking about game to game analytics on our players… I’m talking about more sophisticated analytics on free agents, also better evaluation on HS’ers that have now become second fiddle to portal players.

I thought you were only referring to playing by paying to compete with rivals.

Actually using the concept of moneyball doesn't work much better though. If the team performs well then the other teams will still come cherry pick the stars, simply based on the team doing well. They won't leave them alone because we picked them due to moneyball reasons. I don't think moneyball selections every year will leave us less prone to bad selections. And the less players one has on the field, the less effective moneyball works IMO. When you have 5 players vs 9, moneyball becomes less effective.

Half of the top 25 transfers are from non-power 5 conferences and all but 3 are going to power 5 conferences. A case of the rich getting richer. This is not sustainable for any school except the big ultra rich.

Unlike the women's basketball team where Coach Nelp recruits players in all positions that can actually handle the ball and bring it up the court. Makes breaking the press a little easier. Unfortunately, in the men's game too many players think they have guard skills when they actually have Shawn Bradley ball skills. So many times watching our games this season and I just kept pleading for Garcia and Williams and even Barnes to give the ball up to one of the guards to bring up the court. And Carlous made so many bad and lazy passes that got picked off for an easy bucket the other direction. I liked him posting up because of his strength and I was OK with him spotting up to shoot as long as it wasn't the first touch in the front court only 5 seconds into the shot clock.

Running that damn weave with 3 of your 5 players struggling to dribble was scary bad and then we had to throw up a guarded shot at the clock. Hopefully Konkol reworks his offense this year and also works on a competent zone defense to use occasionally.

Yeah, he needs to watch how the women's team ran the weave and then all of a sudden one of the weavers became a screen and another became a back door cut. Konkol's weave had no purpose to it. Wasn't designed to get a specific person the ball, wasn't designed to run a defender off and gain a mismatch, wasn't designed to confuse via movement.

I guess all those Rice departures don't put much value on a Rice degree. Insane! Of course, they will all end up in the NBA.

I thought McBride at ORU was a Senior? Someone will nab him. 39% threes and 90% free throws.

His first few games here showed spectacular skills For some reason he seemed to level out after that. I still think we need to recruit skilled foreign players like him.

Lots of what if's . If Kodi Maduka our rim protector and starting center doesn't nearly die on Manning's arrival day. If Shea Seals doesn't get all those fouls against Clemson, If David Brown doesn't get hurt in 1981, If Kurtz and Coley went to OSU who recruited them both, If we had hired Billy Gillispie instead of Buzz Peterson, on and on..
