Possible Contract extension for Haith

I don't see it. At all. The "year we've been waiting for" team would have beaten this team. Doug's third year squad (after coming off of the worst period in the program's history) would have easily trounced Haith's 3rd year.
Haith's year 4 team (this year) would have beaten ANY of Wojcik's teams. Wojcik's best team in terms of talent "the year we've been waiting for (2009-2010)", was not even close to competitive with the best team in the league that year, Memphis. And this year's team under Haith was at least in games against Wichita State and Cincinnati, both of which may have beaten that Memphis team. The only C-USA team (in the Woj era) that was better than any current team in the AAC was the Memphis team Calipari took to the finals (2007-2008). Heck, TU wasn't even competitive with UAB and UTEP in 2009-2010...not sure how it would be competitive with Haith's team this year.

And Hurtt + Uzoh + Medder would have destroyed us from outside with wide open shots and probably won on a 29 foot runner that Taplin didn't defend appropriately.
You are making a fool of yourself. Nice how you use one failed play to prove Haith's utter lack of worth. Justifying your opinion's never looks good. Learning when to be quiet has always been your weakness.

Put the shovel away and take a break. You’re embarrassing yourself, although maybe it’s your goal to not go quietly and instead go out in a ball of flames.

Look, I recognize that people here like the Tulsa program. I recognize that we all want it to do well; but the sheer amount blue and gold glasses here are astounding.

There were several Memphis squads in C-USA that were more talented than anything we've had in the AAC. The problem Memphis started having was Pastner could recruit the lights out but couldn't coach worth a damn that's why he did so poorly in the tournament. The difference between 2010-11 Memphis (with 2 5 star recruits and a couple of 4 star recruits in the Barton bros, Joe Jackson, Tarik Black, and Chris Crawford) and a team like WSU or Cincy this year is that those teams have good coaches who can make up for smaller pool of talent.

The talent level that Woj's teams played against in Memphis is as high or higher than anything we have in the AAC. The coaching is much better here though; which is why I think we need a better coach to really compete at a high level.

Final thoughts: That TU team would be a team we'd love this years Haith team to play against. They averaged 4.5 made 3s per game. The biggest fault of this year's Haith team is leaving a corner 3 wide open, but Wojcik's offensive set included Wheatley literally just standing in the corner on offense until it was time to run back to defense.

They'd leave that corner wide open, Wheatley would airball 2 or 3 3s because Wojcik would give him the eyes, and then a fastbreak for Haith's team.

Uzoh + Jordan (despite being double-teamed) would probably have 4 or 5 alley oops in the single game.

Oh man, Wheatley. How frustrating it was to watch teams literally not guard him, put the player matched up with him in the paint to clog the lane, as Wojick continued to play him simply bc he was his first recruit. He wasn't that good on defense, though that was the excuse for minutes.

Haith is much better than Woj. Can't believe anyone would even consider comparing the two. There's a reason he's currently an assistant at powerhouse East Carolina. Be patient. We're trending in the right direction in the top conference we've ever competed in. NCAA tourney in 2016, replaced 9 players go 15-17 in 2017, and now 19-12. Replacing that many players is a longer rebuilding project than most, but some fans on here obviously don't understand that. We continue on this trend, and we'll get 21-22 wins next year, be in or on the bubble, as long as we avoid dumb losses, which I'd say is the area Haith must improve in. Norfolk St @Mizzou, SEOSU/Lamar here. He's got to coach every game like we're playing Wichita St/Cincy.

Glad there are still some sensible folks here.

I think there are more that think along this line than like OriginalTulsaFan or Aston. This team IMPROVED a bunch this year in offensive output and defensive efficiency and in overall record. We finished 4th in a conference where the top 3 are all upper seeds for the NCAA tournament and will be favored in their 1st game (and 2 will be favored in round 2).

Yes, we all know Haith needs to stop coaching early season non-con games as though they are exhibitions.

The reason Doug's an assistant at a cruddy basketball program is because he was smacking his players around at Charleston. If Haith was fired; where do you think he would go? My guesses would be either a low major team as a HC, a tv commentator, or an assistant to Barnes at Tennessee.

We're playing in the best conference we've ever been in; but we can't make the post season. The "project" argument skirts logic. Haith has had people he's recruited on every team since he got here 4 years ago. Two of the "seniors" he graduated were a guy who never played and a walk on.

Honestly there's no such thing as a season to season "trend" in basketball. Last year's performance doesn't mean we will be better next year. Take the WSU team we beat with FVV + Baker + Shamet as an example. Losing an all conference player and our top shooter don't bode well. The saving graces for next season might be Jeffries, Horne, or the addition of a couple more big bodies down low. Other than that; there's nothing on the radar that says "NCAA tournament contender" and with Frank's track record of losing games we should win I don't think anyone should be getting their hopes up until we see some conference tournament wins or wins over the RPI top 50.

Wojcik’s teams finished 105th on average over 7 years in power ratings.

Haith’s teams have finished 100th on average over 4.

Woj was an ass, but there’s little objective difference between the quality of his teams and Haith’s.
And that's AFTER the cruddy teams that ended up getting Wojcik fired.

He needs to stop coaching end of the season tournament games like they're exhibitions too.

In fact; he needs to stop coaching exhibitions like they're exhibitions! (SEOSU)

If you drop Frank’s best and worst years to eliminate extremes, His win percentage is almost exactly what it has been at TU, so I suspect what you see is what you’re going to get. He’s a pretty good coach, not very good or great. But that’s more an argument on why we shouldn’t have hired him in the first place, not an argument on why to fire him now. I’m not extremely optimistic but since we’re where we are, I understand the logic of giving him another year or two. A regular 3 year extension without easy outs seems like a really bad idea though.

I think preseason Canada or Foreign trips are the best antidote for Haith’s not being ready to play each season for the first 8-10 games. Maybe that would solidify a starting lineup sooner. I think you can take one every four years. Hopefully the University will support one next fall. Otherwise we start out losing to a 200 RPI team.

Does anyone kno what a trip like this costs? Perhaps we can create a fund to donate specifically for this. Hell, I’m young but could comfortably, and would, donate $1,000 for a trip (my wife would kill me, but I’ll just tell her she can buy more clothes and purses).

Air_Raid918...
A little before your time, maybe a lot before your time; but the best conference where we ever played was the old Missouri Valley Conference back in the 60's. That conference was loaded!

Dog house!

I'm kinda surprised Haith wants to stay at TU as much as the article implies. Despite moving up the food chain and landing in a major conference, a conference Haith has proven capable of competing, the once proud fan base of Golden Hurricane basketball has become a laughing stock, the worst attendance in the AAC per program success.

I think it's great Frank believes TU can be a destination job, none of his predecessors seem to share the same belief. However, the lack of butts in the seats makes it harder to recruit, especially vs locals schools such as Wichita State and SMU. Don't think for a sec Greg Marshall uses the line, "you see all of those empty seats in Tulsa"? The TV exposure is great, but it only helps to a certain degree when the camera pans and those empty mid-court donor seats are vacant. If the biggest donors don't show up, then why should the biggest recruits?

I can see kids favoring a bigger conference sometimes but our TV exposure is as good as anybody and much better than the PAC 12. We have to have the recruiters that can sell us over our conference mates. That's the bottom line.
The PAC-12 is awful as a whole. You want to use negative recruiting against a conference....remind all the kids you're competing with that conference for that their 2nd place team didn't get into the NCAA tournament this year.

He’s putting on the full court press to get an extension. The entire article is built on the premise that this was our best season since 2003.
Agree, as I've stated before, until he reaches the NCAA with HIS players, there shouldn't even be talk of an extension. If anything else, he should be on the hot seat if we don't reach the NCAA next year

I agree with him being on the hot seat if the NCAA's are missed next season. I've done, far too much, research (googling) since the rumors of an extension was written in the World, the consensus is if an extension for 1 or 2 years isn't given then recruiting is basically impossible for the staff and he might as well be fired now.

We'll never know for sure, but if this extension is to give Haith another shot at recruiting and getting into the NCAAs, with the understanding of not doing so results in being fired, then I'm in favor.

That’s certainly damning this year with faint praise isn’t it? He’s made a career out of pulling a rabbit out of a hat just before he gets fired. He might realize he doesn’t have any more rabbits in that magic hat.

I really liked your idea of starting a fund page for some summer ball, I really like Haith as a person, he is a great guy and I would love to see him do great things. And if donations would help him get there, I am all for it

And the parking "excuse" is officially beyond absurd at this point.

I'm struggling with the financial risk of another 3 years for TU at this point without a reduction in salary or explicitly raised separate funds.
I'm tired of the parking excuse as well for both football and basketball. There is always somewhere to park on campus that is well lit (and free) that is no more than 3-5 minute walk to the arena/stadium. And then there are a eleventy-billion (shout out to a former student of mine) shuttles that run during games.

TU needs to be protected in any extension obviously, but you also don't want a lame duck coach trying to recruit stud local kids and he can't say "I'll be your coach for as long as you're here". While coaches can usually say that and be truthful when saying it, things can happen like they get fired for only winning 9 games in 2 consecutive years or TU wins 30 games and a power conference school offers $4M per year. I'm OK with a commitment to the coach and his process...but the buyout cannot be ridiculous if he gets fired. Make it incentive based....and extra $50k for making the NIT, an extra $200k for the head coach and assistants for making the NCAA tournament.

When have we ever been "protected" in an extension? When are ANY schools?

When has an extension ever worked out in Tulsa's favor in the revenue sports to ward off new suitors for a high performer?

Universities are the lame ducks. Doesn't really matter when you've got the pockets of say an A&M, but it is crippling for smaller schools.

I am hoping that Frank is being a stand up guy and saying I understand you don't want to make it anymore difficult to let me go, based on my performance as a coach until I deserve it. But I need to at least have the illusion of an extension to have a chance with these hot local recruits I am going after. Thus I hope they are not making a buyout any more difficult on TU to get out of with a new extension. But I doubt it. Haith and his agent usually have acted in self preservation of Haith's career in all their actions beforehand. That is the logical actions you would expect.

Haith, do something unexpected.
