Today starts the first day of Conference Tournaments. The Horizon and Patriot League start today.

The Horizon league are campus sites for the first two rounds and the Final 4 are held in Indianapolis.

The Patriot League holds all of its tournament at Campus Sites.

The Horizon Leagues highest rated team on the NET is Oakland at 153. They are also the only team in the conference with a Quad 1 or a Quad 2 win. Oddly enough, Cleveland State (176) and Purdue Fort Wayne (228) are tied atop of the standings at a record of 15-6. They both share the conference title. This is a one bid league.

The Patriot Leagues highest rated team on the NET is Colgate at 137. They do not have a Quad 1 win and 1-1 in Q2. Navy has the most Q2 wins out of the league. None of them have a Q1 win. Colgate is also the regular season Conference Champs. So, if they do not win their tournament then they will get into the NIT. This is a 1 bid league in either tournament.

In the First Day of Games

Horizon League

6 Seed Detroit Mercy defeated Green Bay 79-62. With this win, Detroit Mercy will travel to face Purdue Fort Wayne on Thursday.

10 Seed Robert Morris squeaked by Youngstown State 77-73. They will now travel as the lowest remaining seed to face the number 1 seed Cleveland State Vikings on Thursday.

5 seed Oakland, who is also the highest NET, defeated IUPUI 69-58. Since they are the Highest remaining seed they will travel to face the 4 seed Wright State.

8 Seed UIC defeated Milwaukee 80-69 and will travel to face the Northern Kentucky Norse. You never know the finals could be the Vikings against the Norse for the battle of Thor’s Hammer. Lol. If that isn’t a thing between them then it darn well should be.

In Patriot League Action

10 seed American upset the 7 seed Holy Cross Crusaders 69-63. They will now travel around the beltway to take on Navy in Annapolis Thursday.

In and overtime matchup, the 9 see Bucknell edged out Lafayette 82-81. They will travel to Hamilton, NY to face the 1 seed Colgate.

Todays Games

In the Ohio Valley Conference, Murray State is the class of this conference and could end up being their only entry into the NCAA tournament. They currently have a NET of 24 and have a Q1 record of 2-1. Their overall record is 28-2. This will pretty much guarantee them an at large bid regardless of how they do in the conference tournament. Belmont should get in as well with a 25-6 record but they will need to win their only game to get to the finals to face possibly Murray State. The OVC should get two teams in the dance.

The Big South’s team with the highest NET is Longwood with a 142. Next would be Winthrop at 143. Winthrop is the only team to have a win in Q1 or Q2 in this conference. This will be a one bid conference these guys have a lot to play for. All of these games will be played in Charlotte. Long wood captured the regular season title but they are not the best producing team in the conference. This might be a Longwood vs Winthrop final.

The Northeastern Conference is also a one bid conference this season. The highest NET is Wagner at 132 but they didn’t win the regular season title. The Bryant Bulldogs who I got to watch lose to Bethune Cookman and defeat Holy Cross in the Tournament in Daytona have the regular season title. Bryant is 19-9 but have no Q1 or Q2 wins. Wagner does have a Q1 win. None of that matters as they are far enough down the NET that they must win tis tournament to get in the dance. They did have an opening round on Monday with the two lowest seeded teams. Central Connecticut edged out Fairleigh Dickinson 62-61. All games are at the Campus site of the Higher seed.

OVC is a surprisingly good league. Their tournament is usually a really fun one to watch. As for the NEC, Go Wagner Seahawks...my sister is a Wagner alum. They've got a beautiful campus on Staten Island overlooking the Verrazano Narrows bridge into Brooklyn. I believe Wagner is also the class of the league this season.

Second day of Conference Tournaments

Big South

This league might not have big time teams but their games have been big time games. 2 of them went into overtime and were close until the end of overtime. Charleston Southern got a last second tip in to beat UNC Asheville 79-78. The last game of the evening between Campbell and Presbyterian was a blowout. They resume on Friday in Charlotte. 1 Seed Longwood will take on NC A&T wo upset Radford in Overtime. 4 seed USC Upstate will play Charleston Southern who upset UNC Asheville on that last second tipin. 2 seed Winthrop (favorite to win tournament) will face High Point and Gardner Webb will take on Campbell.

Northeastern Conference

None of these games were even close. This is just a bad conference altogether. Lol. All of the top seeds won. This tournament Semifinals will resume on Saturday. Bryant will host Mount St Mary’s and Wagner will host Long Island. The finals will be on March 8th at the site of the highest seeded team.

Ohio Valley Conference

These opening games were not very interesting. Tennessee State beat SIUE by 15.

Todays Games

In the Ohio Valley Conference the Quarterfinals today have Tennessee State playing Southeast Missouri today. Tennessee Tech will play Morehead State. These will lead to the games against the Conference Leaders in Murray State and Belmont.

Missouri Valley starts today. There are two opening games Illinois State takes on Indiana State and then Valparaiso takes on Evansville. The Valley has Loyola Chicago who should get an at large if they do not win the tournament. They have a 22-7 record, they are 2-2 in Q1 and 3-4 in Q2. They do have 1 Q3 loss but the rest are wins. Missouri State has an outside chance but they might have to win the tournament to get in. The Valley could be a one bid conference this year

The Sun Belt will also be a single bid conference for the dance. Texas State is the regular season champ and they have the best NET in the conference at 118. They are the favorite to win the tournament. With a 118 and no Q1 wins, If they want to be in the big tourney they have to win the conference tournament.

Lipscomb is the only team with a Q1 win and they are the 4 seed from the west. Liberty is the highest NET and they also have the best record in the conference. Between them and Jacksonville State no one else should compare.

This has Gonzaga as its premier team but Saint Mary’s is not far behind. The San Francisco Dons are looking real good this year at 3-5 in Q1 and 5-2 in Q2. They have an odd bracketing style.

Little Rock who has been getting blown out by everyone just upset the 5 seed South Alabama. Apparently both of these schools are leaving the sunbelt. More conference realignment

Fourth day of Conference Tournaments

Ohio Valley Conference and Atlantic Sun

Just like the Opening round these games were not close. The top 4 seeds are in the Semifinals and these could be good games especially with Murray State. In the ASun, none of these games were close at all. The top two seed in each division are in the Semifinals. These one bid leagues can have the best games and the absolute worst games.

Missouri Valley

The Sycamores and the Redbirds battled it out to the end with Illinois State moving on with a 5 point win. Valpo destroyed Evansville’s soul 81-59. The quarterfinals should be more interesting.

Sun Belt

This conference had two upsets. All of these games were tight games. The most entertaining was Little Rock over South Alabama. With this being a one Bid conference, there is more to play for. With conference realignment looming this was the last game in the conference for some of these teams.

Horizon

Only game that was close was UIC at Purdue Fort Wayne. The rest were blowouts. I still have my Vikings vs Norse final alive. The battle for Thors hammer I am willing to happen. Lol They play again on Monday.

WCC

LMU blasted Pacific by 20 yesterday keeping a GOI team alive. San Diego held off Pepperdine to advance. They have a weird bracketing style to where the top two team play 2 games total to win the championship. That can be good and bad.

Patriot league

All of these games were not close in the slightest. The top 4 teams advance to the Semifinals on Sunday. This tourney is a Campus site tourney.

Todays Games

In the Ohio Valley Conference the Semifinals today have Murray State playing Southeast Missouri today. Belmont will play Morehead State. These games will be on ESPNU with the Finals on ESPN2

You're seeing this more and more where conferences want their best teams in the NCAA tournament for the chance at an upset and the additional share money you get for reaching the next round. The WCC probably doesn't have to do this anymore because Gonzaga and St. Mary's are perennial top 25 teams.

I prefer everyone have the same chance to win the conference tourney though. If you have 8 teams, very team has to win 3 games to win the championship. If you have 10, then 4 teams will need to win 4 games, 12= 8 teams need to win the extra game. This double bye crap is just stupid IMO

There are not enough ways to like this. I agree 1 million percent. Your reward for a good season should just be your seed not several byes.

Hot playing teams can beat stagnant teams who have byes occasionally. See Houston vs Tulsa 1982. And Houston here in C-USA tournament winning four in a row.

Fifth Day of Conference Tournaments

Ohio Valley- Championship Game

As everyone expected Murray State easily took care of Southeast Mo State. The surprise was that Morehead State upset Belmont. Belmont had a horrid shooting night, but I believe the defense of Morehead St. was the factor. This is now a one bid conference unless Morehead State wins the title today.

TeamRatingTeamRatingTimeTV

Big South Conference - Semifinals

The top 4 seeds won yesterday, but that doesn’t mean it was foretold. NC A&T kept pace with 1 seed Longwood and took them to overtime. Longwood just had too much for them in the extra period. Gardner Webb and Campbell was a defensive battle the whole way. These have been the best games all week.

Missouri Valley Conference - Semifinals

I was expecting a better game from Loyola Chicago and Bradley. What we got was a massively one sided affair. The Big south games have been the best so far. The higher seeds one yesterday. Today though Northern Iowa and Loyola Chicago is going to be a rematch of the regular season finale that went into overtime where UNI won. This is a must watch game. This could be a two bid conference.

The Southern Conference opened up the tournament yesterday and the first game did not disappoint. The Citadel and ETSU battled it out into overtime where the Citadel won 84-76. I do not believe that they will win the tournament but as for basketball that was a great game. Today UNC Greensboro takes on Samford in the nightcap. There are Haith family on the Greensboro staff.

South Dakota State went 18-0 in the Summit this year and are a NET 71. They are 27-4 overall and should get into the tournament. Could the Summit be a two bid conference? Great work here. I disagree with your South Dakota State assessment. With a 71 net they will need to win the tournament to get in. A net lower than 50 is essential for an at large regardless of record (unless you’re in the ACC where you might get in with a net 80 and a losing conference record) and probably lower than 40.

I get what your saying but if they get to the championship and lose the championship they will be a 29 win team. It’s gonna be tough leaving out a 29 win team. Their losses this year are to Alabama, Washington, at Idaho and at Missouri state. They have beat every team in the summit by double digits. Most of them by close to 20 points. If they lose the championship game, which I don’t think they will, it would be bad form to leave them out of the tournament.

Mo. state got left out a few years back with a 35 net and something like 24/25 wins. No one would look twice at them leaving out a Summit League team with a net in the 70s.

Congratulations to Murray state for surviving a scare from Morehead state to win the OVC championship and be the first bid into the 2022 tournament

The Dons beat BYU by 12. The WCC will get three teams in the tounament. I say BYU still has an outside chance of getting in. they have a 50 NET and a Q1 of 4-5 and Q2 of 3-3. Chances are though they go to the NIT but will be a top seed.

Sixth Day of Conference Tournaments

Ohio Valley – Congrats to Murray State for winning the Tournament in a very close victory over Morehead State. They almost took it into overtime. The OVC will be a 1 bid conference.

Missouri Valley Conference

Loyola Chicago came out and blistered Northern Iowa. UNI did win the regular season title so if they don’t get into the NCAA then they will go to the NIT. UNI has a 96 NET but their Q1 record is 2-3 and Q2 4-2 so you never know. If I was them I would be looking at who do I got to go through to get to MSG. If Loyola Chicago wins this then the Valley will be a one bid conference.

Every single game of the Quarters was close. Yooler almost pulled out another upset. Louisiana, however, did upset the 1 seed Texas State 79-72. Since Texas State is the regular season Champ then they will go to the NIT. Who is going to make it out of the Summit. Will the Rajun Cajuns upset the trojans?

Southern Conference

These smaller conferences are what make college basketball great. All of these games except the Furman game were within 6 points. All of the top seeds advance to the Semifinals but man this was some exciting basketball. Between the Big South and Southern, this has been enjoyable.

The Patriot league is back again for the Semifinals. They play at Campus sites. The finals will be on Wednesday. As with most of the lower tier conferences the top four made it through to the Semifinals. These should not be easy games for them though so I expect good basketball.

American East

The American East is a campus site tournament. They hold the only team to be a 16 see and knock off a number 1 in the NCAA tournament in the UMBC Retrievers. I do not care what anyone says, to me that was the best game ever in College basketball. I have never been more excited to watch a game between two teams I cared less about in all my life. The twitter feed from UMBC that day was epic. That said UMBC and Vermont stay at the top of this conference each year. Vermont is the favorite but this will only be a one bid conference as usual.

Seventh Day of Conference Tournaments

Apparently on the 7th day I did not rest. So HERE WE GO!!!!

Big South Conference

Congratulations to Longwood for winning the conference tourney. Winthrop had it no chance in this game. This is Longwood’s first trip to the NCAA tournament as a Division 1 member.

Missouri Valley

Congratulations to Loyola Chicago for winning the conference tournament. Drake kept it closer than Loyal wanted them to. Loyola Chicago will probably be the only team from the valley make it into the tournament.

Sun Belt Conference

Upset Central here in the Sun Belt. The 8 see Ragin Cajuns face the 3 seed Georgia State in the championship game. Louisiana beat the 1 seed and the 4 seed to get to the Championship game.

I watched the second half of the SoCon tournament and what a game it was. It looked like Furman had it in the bag in OT making a layup to go up by 2 with about 4 seconds to go in OT but UT-Chattanooga dribbled down inside the half court line and hit a buzzer beating 3.

I was about to say that Chattanooga pulled a Horne on Furman.

Oral Roberts is getting run out of the building. Down 30 with 3 min left
The fact they beat us when they play even less defense than we do says something about the state of TU basketball. ORU literally tried to play 90s Loyola Marymount basketball minus the speed and finishing.

Eighth Day of Conference Tournaments

Sun Belt
Congrats to Georgia State for winning the Sun Belt Conference. Louisiana’s Cinderella run has come to an end.

Southern Conference
Congrats to Chattanooga for the exciting win in overtime over Furman with the buzzer beating three pointer. These games are exciting. I love March.

Atlantic Sun Conference
Atlantic Sun is back for the Championship game held at Bellarmine. Another 1 bid conference but Bellarmine are exciting to watch.

The battle for Thor’s hammer is not going to happen as Wright State beat Cleveland State by 15. Northern Kentucky though did put away Purdue Fort Wayne fairly easily. This is a Number 4 vs Number 3 duel.

Northeastern Conference
Just like the lower tier conferences this is a 1 vs 2 matchup with Bryant and Wagner. After Watching Bryant Lose to Bethune Cookman at the Daytona Beach tourney, I didn’t think they would do well. They won 20 games. This should be a great matchup for the title and only NCAA berth.

Summit
These Semifinals were not even close. South Dakota State showed South Dakota who runs that state. North Dakota State was running Oral Roberts out of the gym. They were up by 30 with 3 min left and ended up winning by 10.

West Coast Conference
The two best games of the whole day and yes, even better than the last second shot in overtime. Watching Gonzaga and San Francisco play each other. San Francisco is a really good team and will go very far in the tournament even though they didn’t get the Auto bid they are still a NET 25. They will get an at large bid. If they do not then congress needs to get involved. Santa Clara probably will not make it into the tourney but they made Saint Mary’s sweat last night.

WCC - Championship

MAAC
This is a one bid conference as well. The best team in this conference is Iona. They have an NET of 85 and they have won 25 games. Them and Monmouth are the only ones with a Quad 1 win. Iona is the favorite to win this tourney and sending Joiner to the NCAA tournament for his last year.

ACC
The first Major conference starts their tournament. The ACC should get about 6 teams in the field. They have 3 teams on the bubble right now. They will start picking them off one by won. Lunardi has 5 teams in I believe they can get one or 2 more. It is not unheard of for a team in the first round of this tourney to make a run to the championship game. These are going to be really good games.

This tournament should come down to two teams in North Texas and UAB. North Texas has a 43 NET with a Q1 of 1-1 and Q2 as a 5-2. UAB has a 53 NET and Q1 2-1 and Q2 of 2-2. CUSA will probably only send one to the dance but they have two that can make a case for themselves. The rest have no shot.

The SDSU coach should be on our short list to replace Haith. Seriously. That team is so well coached.
Well right now we have a coach. They won’t even talk list until they have decided to move on. If they have it in their mind to right now, they might have him on the list. The thing is we don’t know what kind of coach they are looking for. Depending on what they want he might not be in the list.

You mean a current head coach they'll have to pay the going rate for?

Congratulations to Jacksonville state who were the regular season champs for getting the auto to the NCAA tournament. Bellarmine won the ASun tournament but since they are not eligible for the NCAA tournament due to their transition to Division 1, it goes to the regular season champ.

They have little state syndrome
Hahaha! They seriously do. My dad is originally from Providence and I grew up very close to there. My wife always jokes because we've driven from my parents' house in MA to Mystic, CT a couple of times, and she always tells the kids not to blink in RI otherwise you might miss it. People from RI take on that small town mentality where an offense against one of them is an offense against all of them. This is prevalent in neighborhoods in the NE in bigger cities like Boston where Dorchester, Charlestown, Roxbury, etc. all act like that....you'd almost think they were their own towns. StL has some of this compartmentalization too except instead of "where did you grow up?" they ask "What high school did you go to?" It's weird there.

Pawtucket and Cranston (in RI) are exactly as you mention as well. If you've seen Family Guy, I swear Quahog is based on Cranston based on the view of Providence. Pawtucket is just a bunch of blue collar old worlders who are offended anytime anyone speaks ill of Pawtucket. I swear most of the people in Pawtucket who used to root for the Red Sox have switched to the Yankees to spite the Red Sox because the Sox moved their triple AAA team away from there (because the city wouldn't build a new stadium to replace McCoy Stadium which was like 80 yrs old...it was decrepit when I was a teenager and going to games. Unfortunate because it was the site of the longest game in pro baseball history back in the 80s.

Wright state

Delaware

Bryant for surviving the fans

Gonzaga for getting revenge on Saint Mary’s
