2024-2025 Men's Schedule

according to the Jacksonville Classic site the field is set with 6 teams and the tournament will be over 3 days. Supposedly according to the teams websites they are only supposed to play three games. The question now is who are the matchups. Currently they are not set. According to some Rando in the twitter feed he is saying that Rhode Island and UT Arlington have a stand alone game. No where I saw on the teams sites does it say that. The good thing is they have set the field with 6 teams and now we just need to know who is playing who and on what day as it is now 3 days and not 2 days.

Disappointing field imo. 4 of those 5 teams had a NET south of 200 last season. Detroit was 1-31.
This really seems like a scheduling failure by the staff. I know people like to talk about how hard scheduling has gotten in general, but 200+ teams were able to get their early tournaments nailed down before us. Thats on the staff.

UT-Arlington could be tough. They got to the WAC Championship game last year and got Diante Smith (All Southland) in the portal.

Austin Peay is picked 4th in the Atlantic Sun Conference with portal pickups of LJ Thomas from NC State and NAIA All-American Quan Lax.

Rhode Island got Sebastian Thomas All -Conference in the America East Conference last year and Nebraska transfer Jamarcus Lawrence.

Georgia State has Zarique Nutter from N Illinois and Darnell Evans , a D2 23 ppg player.

Detroit mercy- still looking to turn things around.

Looks like UT Arlington , Rhode island and Tulsa should be the strongest. Georgia State and Detroit the weakest, and Austin Peay the question mark.

Here is the schedule for the Jacksonville classic. Detroit Mercy on 11/26 at noon eastern and Georgia State on 11/27 at 2:30 eastern

Didn’t we win last year’s classic that included Missouri? Maybe we can win the Jacksonville Classic if they break ties with point differential.

That would be #356 and #283 in last years final NET rankings. Not only a complete waste of time and money but will hurt our NET this upcoming season. Assuming those teams are comparable to last season.

Yep, worst of all possible worlds. Hopefully fans can provide feedback and maybe we can do better next year.

That was a straight MTE. Jackson state and South Carolina state went to Missouri and then came here to play. We never played Missouri. This is an onsite tournament. So we won nothing last year except two games. So if it will make ya feel better Missouri did lose by 1 to Jackson state. So you could say we won the MTE but we really didn’t.

Well according to Konkol we DID win the official event and there was a golden turkey trophy that was supposed to come with winning it.
The team needs neutral site tournament experience if they ever want to do well in the post season. Home games don’t count for beans in terms of “tournaments / events”

I’m not saying they do.

I’m saying we won the “event” and have a golden turkey trophy somewhere to prove it.

I would prefer URI.
I think UT Arlington would serve us better with the net than Rhode Island. You don't want to go historical with Rhode Island. Unless Miller hit the jackpot this transfer season and put a team together that was decent for the first time at Rhode Island, UT Arlington may be better. The past two years Miller has had records of 9-22 and 12-20.

That is Georgia state not Georgia southern. Georgia state was 222 in the final net. Not much better than southern honestly.

Odom plays against his former team. Anyone here going to Florida for the tournament? Hurricanes ( not the Golden ones ) should be over by then. I didn’t see if ESPN was picking up this tournament?

Last year no one picked up this tournament. It was on some crappy streaming only website that looked sketch as hell. Unless something changes, I imagine it’ll be the same bs. $9.99 per game to watch a single crappy camera angle filmed by some kid for $10/hr.

Moving to a 4,5, or 6 finish, up from a 9, would be a nice improvement. Would be a finish in the top 1/2 or 1/3 of the conference. Would, at the least, be a steady improvement in our record and league finish over the last 3 years. (5, 15, 20) I just can't believe we get picked so low. Under Frank, and under Konkol we constantly beat our rank in conference, except Konkol's first year. You'd think the other coaches would notice, instead of picking us 3 or 4 spots too low every year.

Those polls are always just lazy

We might have been pretty good if we had signed Lindeborg.

IRVING, Texas – Defending American Athletic Conference champion UAB has been selected as the preseason favorite to win the 2024-25 American men’s basketball title in voting done by the league’s head coaches, the conference announced Friday, October 11.

UAB received nine first-place votes and a total of 141 points to be named first, while Memphis, which earned four first-place votes, was selected second with 136 points. South Florida, the 2023-24 American regular season champion, was picked third with 108 points, followed by Wichita State in fourth place with 102 points. Florida Atlantic was picked fifth with 97 points, followed by Temple (86), North Texas (83), Charlotte (65), East Carolina (63), Tulsa (44), UTSA (35), Tulane (35) and Rice (18).

UAB senior forward Yaxel Lendeborg, who was the 2024 American Men’s Basketball Championship Most Outstanding Player, was voted as The American’s Preseason Player of the Year and was the lone unanimously selected member of the Preseason All-Conference First Team. Memphis guard Jared Harris was selected as the Preseason Freshman of the Year.

Lendeborg was selected to the first-team All-AAC team in 2023-24 and was picked as the Defensive Player of the Year. He broke the UAB and AAC record for rebounds in a single season with 370 and the school record for double-doubles with 19. He averaged a double-double with 13.8 points and 10.6 rebounds per contest in his first year with the Blazers.

Lendeborg was joined on the Preseason All-Conference First Team by East Carolina senior guard RJ Felton, a 2023-24 All-AAC Third-Team member, and Memphis redshirt sophomore guard PJ Haggerty, the 2023-24 AAC Freshman of the Year while playing for Tulsa. Two transfers into the conference rounded out the First Team, including Memphis senior guard Tyrese Hunter (11.1 ppg and 4.1 apg at Texas) and Temple graduate student guard Jamal Mashburn Jr. (14.1 ppg at New Mexico).

Senior guard Alejandro Vasquez and junior guard Efrem ‘Butta’ Johnson return for the defending champion Blazers and were named to the Preseason All-Conference Second Team, alongside Florida Atlantic graduate student guard KyKy Tandy, Memphis redshirt senior guard Colby Rogers and South Florida sophomore guard Jayden Reid.

Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team or student-athletes.

The 2024 American Men’s Basketball Championship will be held at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas, March 12-16.

Close to my list but I have USF much lower as well as Temple and Tulsa higher as well as North Texas. Yes we almost had Lendeborg......you can guess what made the difference.............

I think Archie could take another step forward this season. Could see him being All Conference second team.

Is this exhibition or controlled scrimmage?

Side note: Tulsa is the only team in the Jacksonville classic that has not put their opponents on the schedule yet. We also have the worst schedule NET ranking out of all of the teams. All of them play up at least one game except Tulsa and UT Arlington. We play down each game.

Have to remember NET rankings mean nothing till the season starts. So many teams like Memphis, Arkansas and FAU have replaced nearly all their players and results are unknown. You can kinda go by returning starters but even then the portal has confused things.

You are absolutely correct but we are talking about Detroit Mercy, Austin Peay and Georgia state. They are not the same

Just following up on this... it turns out that the Jacksonville Classic will indeed be on some bs one-off streaming site: BallerTV.com 🤦‍♂️. Link below:

I wouldn’t put Austin Peay in the same category as Detroit Mercy and Georgia State. Austin Peay was 19-16 last year and added LJ Thomas from NC State and Quan Lax, an NAIA All-American. I’m glad we are playing the other two.
