EOH Podcast--On the Road with the 'Cane--Asst. Coach Desmond Haymon

TU fans remember the famous four point play by Pooh Williamson in 1995 NCAA tournament. But TU MBB Asst. Coach Desmond Haymon made perhaps the most iconic 4 pt play in NCAA tournament history in 2014 with his game tying play for Stephen F. Austin against VCU in the closing moments. He talks about his coaching and playing career:

Games of Interest (2.8.23 - 2.10.23) @ Houston

ITS GAME DAY!!!

The Men travel to Houston and will get their healthy does of Frittata. I will watch the game but I am keeping my expectations low. Is this the day that we drop our NET to 300? Notice that Tulane has one Q4 loss and its to Tulsa? May god have mercy on our souls.

The women got monkey stomped last night by the SMOOOO. I really thought their game was today.

Todays games

American conference heavy day today with 4 games.
Loyola Chicago hosts Saint Joseph’s and Oklahoma State hosts Texas Tech.

And One

Lebron James passed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar last night to take the scoring title. The lakers still lost to the thunder but he was able to get his 36th point and record braking basket as time expired in the 3rd quarter. Can he stay around long enough to break 40,000 Career Points?

GO TU!!!

Requiem for the Big East

ESPN's 30 for 30 about the rise and fall of the Big East conference re-aired last night. It is my favorite 30 for 30 mostly because I remember all of the things as they happened b/c Providence (and Dave Gavitt) were key players in the formation of the conference. Originally comprised of Providence, St. John's, Georgetown, Boston College, Syracuse, Villanova, and Seton Hall. UCONN was added later as was Pitt. The first primary cast of recruits included Chris Mullin, Ed Pinckney, and Patrick Ewing. I mean the list of coaches: Boeheim, Pitino, Carnesecca, Carlessimo, Massimino, John Thompson...and that was just the 1st wave.

Game Thoughts Wichita State

Shockers are bigger, quicker, defend better and today shot better. Ran some good back door cuts and fast breaks.

That got them the 24 point lead. Nice comeback but it was against mostly non starters.

BB Knight player of the game and Dalger player of the last 5 minutes. Pritchard medical issue no show. Obviously no other PG on the team.

Most of the comments on here are now about who we release at the end of the year to make room for improved players. I would rather go the other direction and say who I like in the return column.

The 3 Freshmen
The 3 Nov signees
Selebangue
Pritchard
Dalger
Griffin

Need 3 more in April.

Thought I would put this in here, if only for reference of who has been hired and who has not. Hasn't named anybody from the former staff yet. He has covered almost half of his staff in short order. I will add to this as people are announced.

TU Recruiting? Fish Off Your Own Dock-And They Did!

When the staff came in they were extremely pressed for time. A longer duration to recruit, sure you would spend more time in Texas and other places too. Yet, as I mentioned, and we all know, with coaches being “thoughtfully“ added to the staff, along with time compression, I thought the staff did well.

Thoughts:

1. Before you take your boat across the lake just simply fish off your own dock at the marina, recruit here in Oklahoma. The staff fished off their own dock, and they did well.

2. We all know. This program has had to ALWAYS swing and fight way above its weight class. This years class is another example of taking kids in who need a new position, were undiscovered, need more time in the weight room, etc..

3. Not a criticism but an observation, no portal transfer offensive lineman. Possibly when the spring portal opens up after spring practices across the nation wrap up? We’ll see another flurry of players hit the portal.

The staff was thoughtful and deliberate. We all know there’s a lot of moving parts to a college football team.

Games of Interest (2.5.23 - 2.7.23) Wichita State

ITS GAMEDAY!!!

Tulsa hosts Wichita State this afternoon. The men are looking to get a win coming off a 3 game losing streak.
The only other game today is Houston traveling to Philly to take on Temple.

And One

Oklahoma and Texas have not been approved to leave the Big12 early. The teams are supposed to leave in 2025 for the SEC but negotiations stalled as I figured they would. There is still a shot of them leaving early but the chances are slim to none and slim is packing his bags.

GO TU!!!

📝 Larry Lewis Recap: Late TU comeback falls short against Wichita State

What was an abysmal performance with seemingly zero energy for most of the game turned somewhat interesting. Intensity was amped up when it seemed like there was no hope. In the end, it wasn't nearly enough, as archrival Wichita State prevailed 86-75 Sunday afternoon in front of 3,754 fans at the Reynolds Center.

Local Talent

Who out of the 2023 class do you all hope we successfully recruit at the local level?

Camden is my vote. Absolute beast on all 3 sides of the ball. If the officials had been less worried about Dale Condict's legacy and falling over themselves about the Rodriguez/OSWho connections and more worried about doing their job with impartiality, he would have a gold ball right now, too. Cam is a lot like Zaven, very versatile and under the radar.

Private Sector Death Panel

Another example of how insurance company will put profits ahead of medical care. And people worry about government death panels

Signing Ceremonies - Just for fun

If anyone is interested I will be zooming my signing ceremony in the next few weeks. I have narrowed my decision down to the vehicle but am playing three dealers against each other. They will all be invited to watch the zoom ceremony and I have asked each for a logo hat. I am going to use all the drama I can muster when finalizing the hat to place on my head. Although I don’t get any NIL money I am hoping to get my manufacture signing bonus. 😁

PS if I don’t sign with Haiston’s preferred dealer he can write regular columns asking why they didn’t make more of an effort to get me!

A note to Huffy

Just a note to Huffy concerning your post in the ‘Fishing off your own dock’ thread re: KW on the football board.

I’m not naïve to the situation that brought KW here. I don’t have the inside info you do, but I’m not clueless. It‘s never bad to post some puffery on the public board for recruits and their families to read, which is what I was doing.

Perhaps you should move your post here. Just a suggestion.
