Schedule is back up for the NEOFC tournament.....hoping they made a mistake. Our '11 girls team is playing in the boys bracket for better competition and they show one of our games to be against an '09 boys team.
So how'd everyone do this weekend? Our boys went 1-0-2. Won the 1st game 2-0 in a really good effort against a team that handled us easily in a scrimmage about a month ago. Score probably should have been about 5-0 as we missed several open nets and opportunities. Only serious test against my son was a PK the kid yanked well wide. TBH, my son guessed right and got a good push and I think he had everything but a perfect shot covered. 2nd game, after lunch was a grinder for both side. Kids played well for the first 20 minutes and then you could see that lunch and the heat hit them. Energy level and work rate dropped significantly. But the defense held pretty well. My son wasn't ever really tested as most shots were well outside the area and straight at him. He did come off his line once and made a really nice intervention to scoop the ball before the attacker got there. My son was rewarded by getting plowed over and road rash around his eye. The only goal came with about 2 minutes left off a free kick. My son read it was a cross and started to come to either catch or punch it when it took a flick off of one of his defenders' heads which popped it high and with a ton of top spin. Pretty much a fluky goal. Minute later one of our players makes a great run, gets into the box takes a touch forward and gets taken down from behind. Ball rolls out and the ref awards a goal kick. No doubt in my mind it should have been a PK. Anyway, 1-0 loss, but because our bracket went 1-1 against everyone, my son's team won the group on goal differential. Finishing 2nd would have been better

We played the NEOFC Bartlesville team which is easily one of the two best teams at the OPC level in OK, the other begin the SLSC 06 Premier team. Boys got hammered on the scoreboard and on the field. That team is physical but also pretty dirty. Lots of swiped ankles behind the play when the ref is not looking. (Officiating in this tournament was pretty atrocious....2-3 offside calls missed because the AR was 3-4 yds behind the defensive line to make sure he could keep up with plays...well, that also keeps the play onside from that perspective). The NEOFC team is extremely good at moving and keeping the ball. Well trained to play the ball to feet, etc. My son made a few nice saves including a screamer headed to the top part of the goal that he made a nice tough save on to push over the bar....that drew a few "Nice saves keep" from the other team's parents. He also butchered a couple decisions when the game was out of hand. I think this team needs to get a little more mentally tough because you could see a lot of slouched shoulders after getting down.
We've got a few weeks before this team plays another competitive game. My son will be headed to Plano with the NPL side. If the NPL keeper gives up as many goals as he did this weekend, my son might see more playing time than he anticipates (12 goals in 2 games).
He's also got Union HS tryouts today. I have no idea what to expect. Not one of the GKs he plays with or trains with goes to Union. If there are multiple GKs who show up, I have no idea where they play. Union is committed to 3 teams (FR, JV, and Varsity) but they've also had 4 in the past when they've had the player numbers to support it adding a 2nd FR team.
I saw the U11 girls bracket...talk about super competitive.
