Opening games

I don't tend to post a lot of the football/basketball threads since I just am not in the know. I have more knowledge on the soccer/softball programs. However, I went to Konkols introduction event and I have never felt more happy about the quality of person we hired. His enthusiasm and his philosophy on coaching to me was outstanding. He won me over that night and since then he has shown me that he is willing to go after bigger recruits than in the past. Have we won those battles? No....but I rather lose a battle than not even be a part of it. All it takes is one win to start rolling in other recruits. He will get that win sooner or later because his personality alone. I'm giving him 3 years before I make any long-term judgements. These first 2 years will not be judged on matter of success on court but matter of improvement in older players, and his williness to continue to push for higher quality recruits (even if we lose out).

All of this. I like the approach that Konkol had taken so far. I also feel that Carson and Dickson are also trying to get the athletic programs going in the right direction. Right now everything feels like it will be good sooner than later. Sooner meaning the next year or two.
I agree. It's been a while since we've had any positive vibes around the basketball program and the few we had in the 2019-2020 season got derailed by COVID.

At least you get the sense they're trying to build up some positivity around the program with some community outreach, opening the doors to practice, etc. Konkol seems to understand he was brought in to not only be a basketball coach. Steve Robinson didn't like the community part either but he won enough games that fans laid off him for his introverted nature. Dougie hated talking to fans and hated taking questions from reporters. I think Frank didn't mind that part until the fans and media turned on him because of the lack of direction of the program and the inability to keep good assistant coaches around.

And of the decent assistants he brought in, only two seemed to have a noticeable affect on the program.(English & Wainwright) And their were more than two decent assistants.

If we want to complain about anything on opening night, it should be the tip time. Oregon State running a split doubleheader with their men's and women's teams on a Monday night is one of the weirdest scheduling decisions I've ever seen. It would be shocking if there's more than 1000 people at this game.

It looks like Oregon State will be missing 2 guards for our game and will start a freshman PG.

As long as they don't have 9600 there for the 9:00 p.m. game, I am fine with low attendance.

I suspect this is a TV decision as Oregon is on the same network at 7:00 PST.

YOOOOO!!!! RIGHT!!! The game starts at midnight my time. When I go to ESPN it shows the game on Tuesday instead of Monday. I might have to miss it because I have to get sleep before I go working at the polling center for the mid terms. I have to be there at 4:30 am. Game will finish about an hour before I get up to go.

COLLEGE ALL NIGHTER MAN! Just don't go to sleep...you got this

I can understand the frustration on the message boards with coaches who underperform for years and years and always say “ This is my best team ever”. and then flop. But Konkol has been thrown into the worst unregulated college basketball situation ever with NIL, Instant unlimited Portals, unrestrained agents, and overinflated 17year old egos who have been told by peers that they will be in the league after one year after they attend their peer’s favorite college.

Konkol in a very short time, has reached out to a record number of media outlets, high school coaches, AAU coaches, TU basketball alumni that had been neglected, and shakes hands in every restaurant in town encouraging attendance. His practices are open and welcoming.

If he loses this enthusiasm and loses his well praised coaching and recruiting skills after multiple seasons, then I will join the two posters here who want him gone tomorrow. But until then I will give him 100% of my support.
I absolutely don’t want him gone. I just want to win games again and go to the NCAA tournament. Full stop.

I agree that the realities of coaching are different (and even more difficult for TU) than they were even 4-5 years ago. That’s why, if we want to survive in the environment we need to be on our strategic A Game. Kissing babies is certainly a good start, but it’s going to take more than that.

I will admit one thing, I was unaware of how absolutely dog crap OR St. has been lately as I honestly stopped being interested in the college basketball landscape last season when Haith tanked us. I would still prefer not having a new coach’s first game on the road, but it’s better than I previously suspected in terms of win-ability.

Wow you have to be there early. What kind of setup takes 2 1/2 hours? When you say polling center, you are referring to a precinct polling place? Here you have to be there 1 hour early.(6a) Not that long ago(6 or 8 mo appr) it was only 30min.

Yeah I don’t know why we have to be there that early. We also open the polls here at 6 am and close at 7 pm. It takes us like 30 minutes to set everything up and get the poll books up and running. We end up leaving at about 8:30 pm. It’s a realllllly long day for me at the precinct

I assumed every state was 7-7p. That makes it little less extreme, but 1.5 hrs ain't necessary. It makes our setup a little less hectic to provide an hour. But taking a leisurely pace, even if only one person shows up on time, doesn't push the 1 hour for setup.

I don't mind the change to 6a, but if they changed it to 5:30a, I and a lot of others would be complaining. It takes us until 7:30-8:30p to take things down. If we leave at 8:30p that's unusually long. 7:45-8p is more normal.

Are you in OK? At my precinct during the 2020 election, there was an African American woman in front of me and she handed her ID to the poll worker who grabbed the "Democrat" book and could not find her name. He tells her he can't find her on the roll and she asks "Why did you assume I'm a Democrat?" What little color this little man had in his face disappeared almost instantly. BTW, this polling precinct is in Broken Arrow so this really shouldn't surprise anyone.

My home precinct is in Broken Arrow. That story does not surprise me.

Probably better to use the “dog crap” analogy till after the game for one of the two teams. Never want bulletin board material before a game even from an obscure message board.

Yeah I was shocked to see us open at 6 as I thought we opened at 7 like Oklahoma does. If I remember right there are a couple of states that close at 8 pm. We can’t leave until all of the ballots are accounted for even if everything is broken down. We all have to sign all of the paperwork after everything is done so it takes a while.

as for the “democrat” book. Here in Virginia we use an electronic book and it doesn’t distinguish parties. Also a republican can vote in a democratic primary and vice versa.

We actually use a book.(not electronic) No cross voting between pubs & dem's here. The independents can vote on a Democratic party primary tho.(at the behest of the Dem's) The pubs don't give the indy's that behest.

In Nevada the rolls are computerized and you only have to provide your party affiliation for the primary. There is a book where you have to provide your signature though and it has to match what’s on file in order to vote.

Computer analysis of signatures?

Back on Basketball for a moment. We talk about how the home schedule for Tulsa is not that exciting. out of the two schools in Tulsa, we have the best schedule. Oral Roberts has scheduled two NAIA schools (John Brown and Bacone) and two Division 2 schools (Oklahoma Baptist and Rogers State). This is some horrible scheduling.

No, a poll worker compares your signature in the book to the scanned one in the computer.
That was my fear. Making poll workers operate as handwriting experts, when they aren't is just crazy. Sorry to drag this away from the the sports topic. I'm finished doing that, way after I should have been. I just had questions that we should have taken to crossfire. My apologies, done.

Our county in Texas does not have you sign a book, but you sign on an iPad like device with your finger. I do not write well on an iPad, although my wife would argue my writing looks bad enough I could be a doctor.

I don't hate this game at all. A road win over a Pac 12 team to start the season is a nice boost. Probably made more sense when it was scheduled than it does in hindsight with a new coach and half the team new but a good decision doesn't become a bad decision just b/c the expected facts don't play out. If we win this, it'll be a way better boost than beating Northwest Bumblefudge St A&M in front of 1000 fans in Tulsa.

They came to our place first. So that is a nice home and home we need more like that.

Given where we're starting, to get to where we all want the BB team to be, we're going to have to go on the road for some games that we hate and win them. Beating up on AAC-Lite teams and people who will play us 1-1 at home won't cut it.

First game of the contract was in Portland, then they came to Tulsa, now we finish it off in Corvallis. We had a similar deal with KState that worked out great for us at the time.

I don't recall the Portland game I guess

Because it was on the pac12 network and almost no one outside of Oregon could watch.
We did play them in Portland 7 years ago. I am sure that wasn’t part of the deal.

we have played them 3 times. This year will be number 4

December 19, 2015 in portland 76-71 OSU
November 22, 2016 in Tulsa 75-64 Tulsa
November 15, 2021 in Tulsa 64-58 Tulsa
November 7, 2022 in Corvallis

these look like two separate contracts

Here's a bizarre little nugget of history that I have no memory of, from December 2015. The game in Portland was officially part of the "Far West Classic".

"But what was called the Far West Classic for the first time since the original event went dark in 1997 wasn't really a tournament at all.

It was two nights of scheduled twinbills -- the University of Portland versus Weber State and OSU versus Fullerton on Friday, the Pilots versus the Titans and the Beavers versus the Golden Hurricane on Saturday. This year's event involved five teams because Tulsa would commit to only one game, and the Beavers preferred Tulsa to Weber State as a second-game opponent.
"

So I am putting my spreadhseet together for the upcoming season so this is where I am getting some of these random things. Mississippi Valley State plays 15 of its first 16 games away from their court. Unlike Detroit Mercy and Oral Roberts, These guys are playing a couple of heavy hitters and some good teams. They start with Baylor. They also play TCU, Tulane, Wichita State, Tulsa, Colorado State, Missouri and they are also in the Rainbow Classic in Hawaii.

So here are the Exhibition games that I know of from the schedules. IF you are interested in viewing or listening then I suggest visiting their website. I only see one for ESPN+. There might be more but now you know.

That's interesting that with his all new lineup, Penny for your thoughts couldn't pull out more than a 9 pt win over Christian Bro. Tells me we might see more of the same out of Penny's team.
