On to ORU

"Testing....one, two, three....testing"

"Is this thing on?"

Greetings from the sub-300 NET world. A few observations in response to this thread so far:

1. Section M of the Mabee Center is directly behind the visitor's bench. It is a strange collection of empty rows, which are held for visiting fans such as you, AND scattered members of the ORU Varsity Club, which includes a few athletic Hall of Famers. It is bordered to one side by the students in Section N (which will be virtually empty since school is out), and on the other side by high-end donors and sponsors in Section L (which will be virtually empty because there are no high-end donors or sponsors anymore).

2. To create a more "cozy" game experience with only 1500 fans in a 10,000 seat arena, the entire upper section ("The Blue Seats") are closed off for virtually every game, and black tarps cover the end zone sections on either end of the arena, with cutouts for the pep band in Section O and the media in Section P.

3. Do not expect more than a couple of concession stands to be opened, and they will likely be overwhelmed with the "crowd". Get yer popcorn early.

4. Remember, no beer sales. Still high on life.

5. The new Eli mascot makes looks less like Foghorn Leghorn. It now looks more like his sidekick, the little chicken hawk.

6. We all miss "ORU Voice" on the PA. And on the fan forums. He deserved a better fate.

7. The current level of enthusiasm for the program is, how shall we say, "subdued"? Do not be surprised (disappointed?) when what few ORU faithful are in attendance do not respond in kind to your favorite chants involving "2 gay guys named Bob" and "900-foot-Jesus".

8. In all candor, this is not your father's ORU basketball program. It's not even your weird uncle's ORU basketball program. There are faint glimmers of talent, and occasional glimpses of hope, but for the most part, it has simply not been at all good this year vs. legitimate D-1 competition. Think last year's edition at the Reynolds Center, with more turnovers. You might like the freshmen Weaver and Obanor, but they're both really raw. Any outcome within 20 points will be a total surprise.

Questions? Comments? Enjoy the game; and take it easy on the old Hall of Famers in Section M. They're likely just as disappointed as you are...
Anyone on the team have tattoos that you'd like to send our way after a JUCO season? Don't worry. We'll take them off your hands for you.

Nice response from Eagle Backer. The series is more fun when both teams are really good. The problem is that when that's not the case, the game is usually too close for comfort. I'll still be surprised if it isn't under 10 and not decided until the final few minutes.

With the new NET ranking system the argument for not playing ORU is weakened significantly in my opinion. In the past there was no way to keep a 250+ rpi game from severely impacting your ranking, win or lose. But it would seem that since efficiency ratings and MOV are included in NET the game shouldn't hurt much if we actually go out and pound them.

Classy post.

We somehow always find a way to screw this game up or some player for you guys gets his career going.

TU has won some games that none of us really expected to win. And lost a couple we should have won. That’s the Haith era. We aren’t playing our best ball, but the defense has been great early. We run a lot of zone, so if your shooters get hot, like Cal Baptist, you can give us trouble.

Speaking of which, how annoying is that team and its coach?

Our starters are pretty good. Joiner, Horne, and Falokun off the bench are nice. We have a couple of other new guys who will play who will either do something awesome or help you get back in the game for no good reason.

Yep it seems that whipping bad teams can even help your NET ranking by a few spots.

Do we know each other? We both know how much of a train wreck the school is as a whole right now. The general public just cares more about athletics than they do the school so a lot of the screwed up stuff doesn’t get as much attention and publicity

I remember the very first game in 1974 during my freshman year at TU. The atmosphere was electric at the old Fairgrounds Pavilion. TU won in an 85-84 nail biter. ORU reached the Elite Eight that year.

The next year, TU rallied from a 20-2 deficit to win the first game of the series at the Mabee Center. Then there were five years of dominance by ORU (we played twice a year back then) before Nolan Richardson came to TU in 1980.

I guess I'm one of those old timers who still gets pumped about the game.

Good news is WSU only moved down one in the NET after playing ORU last night. TU back to 97. Maybe a small bounce from a road win.

So this game can’t be on TV?

Does ORU not have any way to make that happen? Perhaps if this series isn’t killed off, TU’s AD should insist it only be played at the Reynolds Center.

We’ll be there tonight. It is nice to have a “road game “ in town. I remember the times in the 70s & 80s, when both teams in the series were playing well & drawing bigger crowds than today. It made for a great event. I’m hoping better days are ahead for both programs.

Thanks Debbie Downer. TUs better days are coming this season. I don’t care about ORU being respectable at all.

It's not on broadcast TV, but it looks like you might be able to watch a stream of some sort for free via ORUAthletics.com:

https://portal.stretchinternet.com/oru/

Not sure what kind of production ORU is putting on this season for webcasts, but historically they've been pretty decent. This may just be the live feed from the scoreboard video; might not have a broadcast team.

He’s got a point. Attendance is way down across the state. Kids these days . . .

Also, there are way more entertainment options and people are going to find their niche. Also, I think we are dumber as a society, but that’s a conversation for another day.

Thanks man!

This crew is garbage. That out of bounds call, Miller throws Joiner out of bounds, Tap gets decked. We get fouled in the paint every time. Caucasian official wears Eli underpants.

Just don’t see how the season can remain successful without the ability to shoot 3’s.

The defense must always be “on point”.

Crew letting them play and missed an out of bounds but not garbage
Problem as usual we just are not a shooting team

Igbanu has had 3 balls go through his hands.
We keep double teaming inside and leaving the 3pt guy open, except when we foul the shooter.

Made shots for Tulsa are rarer than rain in Death Valley and this ORU internet feed is painful given their three's are falling now. Reminds me of the last second three the Elite 8 season way too much...

Pretty bad half just seeing the stats. But this is ORU and of course they’re hitting shots which has not happened much for them this year.

TU thus far playing some bad bball. They need to pull their heads out and get focused for the second half.

It’s like we forgot how to play that zone in 6 days. It’s not like we’re facing Zion Williamson, if Nzekwesi can beat Igbanu we can eat those points, stick to the shooters.

Is TU going to start contesting their 3 point shots in the second half? If not this could be a long game for the Golden Hurricane! How can TU play such good D against OSU, K-State, and Dayton and play like crap against ORU?

Zone and make us shoot which we are not good at is only way ORU could win
