Someone in the audience yelled "Let's go Brandon." Biden said "Let's go Brandon...I agree with that."

Neither Facebook nor Twitter allowed his remark to be posted. Small thing? Yeah but even with the media as cheerleaders his numbers keep falling and that is not a small thing.

I thought it was a tacky and uncalled for comment by the caller. It also demonstrated the lack of cognitive ability as well as self awareness the leader of this nation possesses. Just a sad event from all sides.

In comparison to our last President tho…
That is true, however, you don't gain much by claiming to be less terrible than the last guy. We have a leader who says "I'm not supposed to be talking." Who tells him he is not supposed to be talking to the press during his press conference?

Well, everyone knows that Brandon stands for what has been achieved thus far in 11 months by the current administration -

Broadband
Railroad construction
Airport improvements
Non gas vehicles
Develop mass transit
Overhaul roads / bridges
No lead in our water pipes

Inflation, Afghanistan. Yes non gas vehicles are selling like hot cakes. We have a president who contradicts himself frequently.

Of course everyone know what Brandon stands for...well everyone but Biden. He agrees with it.

Russia openly threaten us and NATO. The reason he isn't supposed to talk is that when he goes off of script he says stupid things.

“Everyone” don’t seem too impressed given his 40% approval rating.

Record energy prices
Record car prices
Record crime
Record Covid case numbers

Record low consumer and business confidence

Since there’s a lag of more than a year in much of the causes and effects for the items listed, that puts the blame on the predecessor of Biden, but go ahead with your delusions.

It doesn’t really matter that the Biden administration has been nearly as big of a raging dumpster fire as the previous administration. Dude’s calling kids on Christmas. The guy who told Biden to go eff himself while he was wishing his child a Merry Christmas is teaching his kid to be an asshole and needs to go see a therapist or something.

An unforeseen benefit of being completely senile is some d bag can tell you to go “eff yourself” and you have no clue you’ve just been insulted. You might even choose to repeat the insult. File under “things I never dreamed I would see”.

The senile Dotard is living in Florida for the winter, until he’s indicted and has to go back to New York.

40% probably is good considering he started at 50%

Whether you like them or not, neither Biden nor Trump will be elected president in three years from now. Mark that down.

People have no idea how devastating that exchange was on the world stage and what that does to a myriad of bilateral and multilateral negotiations on everything from arms control to the price of paper clips. If you want to know what stuff costs so much it’s because we are getting stiffed in the world marketplace.

Biden has always been a gaff politician, age hasn’t helped that. I at least appreciate that he doesn’t sit on Twitter or watch Fox News all day so he can figure out what pop culture insults are being hurled at him.

Inflation is certainly an issue, but it’s a fair trade, in my opinion, for a return to normal leadership. hopefully the next person will be as normal and less senile.

The world already knew he seemed a bit senile, especially those leaders he spoke with. I seriously doubt that gaff is causing bilateral arms agreements to go awry. Nice of you to stay with us.

It’s more nuanced than that. Senile is fine if you are briefed and well staffed. It shows that he is neither and the degree his staff insulates him from popular opinion. It’s this type of open source intelligence that becomes actionable. Whether that’s dissecting why he knows nothing of a catch phrase that humiliates him or his true level of cognitive decline. It’s one thing to get tongue tied or fall down the steps. You can excuse that. This is one of the first instances of our allies and competitors seeing that our decision making could break down because he lacks the ability to execute while demonstrating how out of touch he is. It’s crazy the statement they issued the other day that he will run again if healthy. That’s a non-denial denial that he’s got real problems and they know.

The President gets daily briefings and press clips that cover topics like Let’s Go Brandon. He’s political operation briefs him on estimated sales of that type of stuff. He could never watch a second of news and still be responsible for knowing what people are saying about him.

Presidents have the army and the ability to persuade. That’s it. Public opinion is a barometer on your ability to persuade. It’s the blood of the Presidential body. They monitor it constantly. It’s how you govern. Plus he’s got a re-election campaign to run. Trump spent all his time watching TV because he didn’t trust those briefings.

Biden could not escape not knowing what Let’s Go Brandon means unless he is totally isolated by an incompetent or dysfunctional staff or he’s really got problems nobody wants to talk about of the 25th Amendment variety.

After issuing mandates that he has tried to universally support and enforce, today he says the problems are something the states must solve.

The solution also does not lie in comments about Trump. Trump will soon be gone a year and Biden has been in charge...as much as he is capable of doing that. I will repeat my prediction that neither Trump nor Biden will be president in three years. I would hope for a president younger than me.

It’s the correct response, but also the opposite of what he campaigned on. I remember when he was going to “shut down the virus” himself, because we now expect our presidents to be God and they believe that they are. Punting to the states is the last resort of someone who realizes they are powerless and continuing to pretend that they are not is hurting them politically.

Punting to the states is how the law is set up… there is only so much the President can do constitutionally when confronted with any virus. With the OSHA Mandates, Biden is trying an end around using his authority in the relatively limited manner that he can.

Really, it’s just a glitch in the way our government is set up. It wasn’t founded to effectively fight a contagion. Another reason why I argue that the constitution is imperfect when it comes to power dynamics that it creates within and between the branches themselves as well as the state governments.

Like the other issue we are currently discussing, there is no proper response from him that would make him look good. He has put himself in an untenable position with his past actions.

The far left and the far right would not allow someone(even if he is bright and with all his faculties available to him) to maintain a high approval rating. The best politician for the job, (which is not Biden) would only improve himself in small gradations over Biden due to fair and unfair critics.

Throwing responsibility to the states is directly opposite of what he’s been saying for the past two years. It’s the message of someone who has conceded defeat and understands the country is about to set new case records. It’s the message of someone who understands there is zero that can be done at this date at the federal or state level to prevent case numbers which are coming. It’s a message that after two years and billions of dollars we are no closer to preventing the spread of this virus than we were in the beginning. Pretty astounding stuff actually.

To be fair, there is no country in the world 🌎 that is doing much better than us. It is an indictment on world 🌎 political regimes being powerless to handle a pandemic.(no matter their form)

Had Covid arrived a generation ago, this extreme politicization of public health measures would not have occurred. Our assumptions about how Americans participate or don't in society have changed. Polio was bad, but not as deadly as Covid, even so we all immediately took the vaccine after church or before school. Dr. Salk was a hero. Parents signed their kids up for its testing.

Now we have an media group making money off spewing out misinformation and grievances, evangelical preachers visiting churches claiming that the goal of Democrats is to destroy them, people attacking each other on airplanes for wearing or not wearing a masks... We have become a deeply divided country, and the only thing that seems to have any hope of pulling us together is to blame some external force...China, N. Korea, Muslims, immigrants...and reach for the military as a solution.

How does one pull a country together in this environment? Is there a shared vision of what one's societal obligations are on this board? Heck, about half of my male college classmates served in the military during VietNam. From my count, there are only two self identified vets on this board and we're the old guys here from that era.

the only thing that seems to have any hope of pulling us together is to blame some external force...China

It is true that an external force is nearly 100% to blame. Thanks for naming them

Trump losing in 2020 was such a blessing. Not only is he out of office, but now dems are having to own the inability of the government to magically shut down a highly contagious respiratory virus. It's about as huge a blow as possible that can be struck against "defer to the experts / technocracy." The opinion of experts should be considered when determining policy, but it should not be policy, particularly in a field where half the time it has appeared that the experts have been about as accurate as reading entrails.

Damn conservative media spreading misinformation. The real problem are those who are blinded by partisanship and can only see one side. Those who blame the other side for all that has gone wrong. Those who refuse to take responsibility for the failures of their own party. These are the people who are and will continue to divide this country. When you view your side as absolute right and the other side as absolute wrong there will never be unity.

This of course was not motivated by anything scientific. We've known how long people are generally infectious for sometime. It was political to keep it at 10 days until now, and it's political to change it to 5 now.

Btw, given that my Christmas flight home was cancelled and I was unable to visit my mother in the hospital on Christmas, it would have been nice if they'd recognized the politics of this a little sooner.

Features don’t contribute to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of innocent citizens.
That's a blanket statement that doesn't stand up to even the smallest amount of scrutiny. You realize that right? Off the top of your head you should be able to think of several things that the government is not allowed to do that would save millions of lives, but are still things the government should not be allowed to do.

Uh… no, honestly I can’t. Features of government aren’t mortally harmful to large swathes of the government’s non military constituency. That’s just a fact. If they were “features” that were recognized at the outset then no one would have agreed to join the Union.

There might be other problems introduced if you give a certain entity more ability to fight a certain type of public detriment, but that is when you come up with further solutions, you don’t just ignore the fact that thousands are dying just so you can have a more limited government for your own piece of mind. Limited government is cute until the hospital beds are full or the levee breaks or the nuke is launched… then you wish that you had some organization and some people with authority to assist.

You lack imagination. And @watu05 liking a post that presupposes unlimited government power is so on brand for a chicom sympathizer

Suppose we could go with a real life example.
Government health officials dragging infected people out of their homes and apts to undisclosed locations and jailed in containment camps. It did apparently work btw.
