Dick's House of Sport

Is now open at 71st and Mingo. It's pretty damn big. While it doesn't have a ferris wheel or candy shoppe like Scheel's, it does better at some different things than what Scheel's offers. There's not as many water sports things and no gun sales that I could see. They do have better golf and soccer sections and they have a pretty robust fan section with large OU, OSU, Thunder, Cowboys, & Chiefs sections. The TU and ORU sections are moderate at best. They do have Tulsa Oilers gear so when Spring rolls around I wouldn't be surprised if they offer up some FC Tulsa and Tulsa Drillers gear. They do have a small competitive swim section offering higher end TYR and Speedo goggles and racing swimsuits than what you normally see at Dick's or Academy. They also have pretty robust baseball, softball, lacrosse and tennis/pickleball sections that aren't so crammed into the same space like at the old location. The shoe selection is also off the charts for both men and women.

I'm not sad about not having the outdoor section. Tulsa's REi opens in a week and I think that's going to steal a majority of the outdoor market (between them and Sun & Ski).

📝 Larry Lewis Tulsa defeats NSU in season opener

When saying “He’s back!”, that could mean either TU legend Ken Hayes, or TU sharpshooter Keaston Willis. Either way, both had their own significant impact on a fun 82-68 season opening win for Tulsa over Northeastern State on Monday night in front of 2,874 fans at the Reynolds Center. Willis led the way with 17 points, including 5 of 9 in shooting 3-pointers, on what was Ken Hayes Day.

🏀 News/Notes Legendary coach Ken Hayes honored during TU's win over NSU

At Monday’s basketball game between Tulsa and Northeastern State, former TU head coach Ken Hayes was honored on “Ken Hayes Day.” Hayes was a Hall of Fame coach at both programs. A little over a decade ago, columnist Chad Bonham sat down with Hayes to discuss his time coaching at Tulsa. Inside Tulsa Sports originally published this column in March of 2013. Below is the Q&A session in its entirety...

Northeastern State

Looks like the Key to beating Northeastern State is 3 point defense. They have better wide open shooters than us.....Phipps, Allen, Washington....But we should be much stronger inside. (If we have Garcia) They also have Edwards 6'8" , a guard/forward who was a 4 star recruit at DePaul as well as Washington was All American JUCO. So we can't take this team lightly. They are better than Missouri S and T............

🏈 News/Notes TU Football Notebook: Off week

Tulsa has an off week before hosting East Carolina on Thursday, November 14. With another disappointing loss, as one would expect, news mentioning the program isn't very positive...

Kevin Wilson, Tulsa

Last week, I wrote out two paragraphs for the college football hot seat article about Kevin Wilson and how he was in danger of losing his job as the head coach of the Tulsa Golden Hurricane. At the time, they were 35-7 down against the UTSA Roadrunners and looked listless on both sides of the ball. Somehow, they rallied late in the game and escaped with a 46-45 win.

That joy was short-lived. In Week 10, Wilson’s team was 45-7 down at the half and never recovered. The worst part? The game was against a UAB Blazers team that was 1-6 without a conference win before facing Tulsa. There’s a real chance that this Golden Hurricane team will end 2024 with as many AAC wins in two seasons as the final year under Philip Montgomery and the worst overall record for the program since 2018.

Dwon Odom’s ability to play in the clutch, along with a mature and well-rounded game, should serve Tulsa well this season in its attempt to make the next step up.

📝 Larry Lewis Tulsa beats exhibition opponent Missouri S&T in overtime

Tyshawn Archie showed some buzzer beating magic that could be a preview of things to come for TU basketball. Although only an exhibition game, Archie’s 30-foot three-pointer at the end of regulation sent the game into overtime, and catapulted TU to a 75-70 victory over Missouri S&T on Tuesday night in front of an announced crowd of 2,715 at the Reynolds Center.

🏈 News/Notes TU Football Notebook: Tulsa at UAB

UAB coach Trent Dilfer provided an update on quarterback Jacob Zeno during a news conference on Monday.

Zeno, who has been dealing with a lingering injury this season, will miss Saturday‘s game against Tulsa; he hasn’t played since Sept. 28’s game against Navy.

“We‘re still kind of figuring out his shoulder situation,” Dilfer said. “I don’t want to rule him out for the season, but he will not play this week.”

The veteran quarterback injured his non-throwing shoulder against Navy, with Jalen Kitna starting at quarterback the last three games for the Blazers.

In his four games played, Zeno completed 82 of his 118 passing attempts for 819 yards, six touchdowns and five interceptions.

UAB (1-6, 0-4 AAC) opened as a three-point favorite against visiting Tulsa (3-5, 1-3 AAC). The game will kick off on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

📝 Larry Lewis GAME PREVIEW: Tulsa hoping to carry momentum into match-up with UAB

Was it an aberration for Tulsa football, or the sign of things to come? One way to find out is to tune into TU’s game at UAB on Saturday afternoon at 1:30 at Protective Stadium (47,000) in Birmingham.

Missouri S&T Game Thoughts

I know it’s an exhibition and things can go haywire, but man that was a really disappointing performance.

Our offense was atrocious. There was zero inside out ball as Konkol mentioned previously. Just a bunch of dribble drive with a layup or a dish for 3.

Odem looks good.

Reed was trying way too hard tonight and made a lot of mistakes mentally.

Archie made some great plays but also forced some things he shouldn’t have.

Barnes and Carrington were on and off, but showed signs of good things.

Smikle is a beast. He’s raw, but he’s going to be good when he gets some time and experience under his belt.

Overall it was not a fun evening of watching basketball. I hope we can regroup, look at film, and make whatever adjustments needed for the game next week… because it’ll count.
