Saw Whooping Crane on Bricktown canal in OKC?

Was an egret, that are much more common here, and don't migrate until the winter. Mystery solved.
Or a heron although the blue heron is more commonly seen. You'd be hard pressed to see a whooping crane n a city. They are pretty shy creatures. Even the zoos that have them in captivity, they are kept out of sight for the most part, mostly because they won't breed if they feel stressed. If anyone was to see them in the city, it would have likely been injured or couldn't keep up with its migration group (although migration was likely to occur in early spring). That said, Whooping cranes have a little sexual dimporphism but not enough where you would mistake it. They all have the signature red along the top/side of the head and it's pretty pronounced.

Very similar to the whooping crane is the sandhill crane. Slightly smaller in stature. Also have the pronounced markings on its head, its plumage varies from white to gray to brownish but not very dark. It would be very easy to confuse a sandhill crane for a whooping crane.

And honestly, with only about 600 whooping cranes in the wild, if you suspect you see one, in the city nonetheless, you should probably call the local wildlife conservation folks. Don't need some Okie redneck deciding he's Uncle Jimbo on South Park and this whooping crane was "coming right for me" and shooting him.

Running of the Bulls 2024

So the annual Festival de San Fermin, including the 7 days of the running of the bulls in Pamplona kicked off Sunday/Monday. Back when I was younger (and AESPN would show the final day's running live on ESPN) I used to host a watch party that began at midnight because the actual running occurred at 8am local Spanish time (2am Tulsa time). ESPN's production was always done right too...they'd have a "Starting Line Up" of the 6 bulls including weight, breeder, horn span (tip to tip), etc. Then they'd recap the previous day providing stats (total run time, injuries, # of gorings). Most of the run last between 2:15-2:30 and anything over 3 minutes and you knew there was some nastiness along the course.

Anyway, there is a YouTube has a channel called RTVE where you can watch live or for us old farts who can't stay up that late anymore, you can watch the next day. They don't do the starting lineups or stats, but they do have a highlights clip of each day called Los Mejores Momentos (Major Moments).
