USMNT WCQ Thread

Jesse Marsch has to be proud of his new club as they lose, 1-0, but outplay Leister City for virtually the whole match. Leeds is still 1 or 2 points above the drop zone. Meanwhile, CP gets a very nice assist on Chelsea's 2nd of 4 as he neatly lobs a cross onto the head of Kai Havertz. Then he gets Chelsea's 4th on what might be the easiest tap-in of his career. A "look what I found" moment in front of the net & he whacks it in.

Don’t look now but we are so thin at keeper Guzan and a 17 year old could be our second and third choices in the Azteca. Guzan or Horvath are the likely choices.

I’m assuming Turner is number 1, what about Steffen?
Turner has been injured. Hasn't played yet for NE in the new MLS season or CCL. My understanding he is close to being ready and people around NE were surprised he wasn't included in the side last weekend. Steffen played FA Cup for City not long ago. I assume he is healthy and presumably the starter if the game were this weekend but 2 weeks is a long time so maybe Turner might be ready to go. I'd be shocked if they brought in Guzan. They could easily go with Sean Johnson or Ethan Horvath for that 2nd and 3rd spot if Turner isn't ready.

Leeds played an outstanding match. More possession than I've ever seen from them and the attack was still that crisp, fast style. The defense was much better. No glaring breakdowns. The goal from Leicester was a well constructed counter and the finish from Barnes a but of a fluke as the Leeds defender had him closed down and blocked from the goal but he got megged trying to block the attempt. Look for Leeds to take some points in the next 3-4 fixtures against teams that are also struggling to stay up.

Prediction: Everton gets relegated this season. This team is lost and the majority of players look like they want out. I think Watford and Norwich will join them. While Carrot Top is playing really well right now, Norwich still can't find any goals. Watford is just bad. Burnley will get to stay up by default and I like Sean Dyches as do his players. They've been playing some solid soccer recently against some good sides.

Beer?halter has a real problem in goal. I don't know much about Sean Johnson but he might work. I really like Horvath and think he deserves a call up. But if Beer?halter calls up that 17 yr-old with zero caps with the Sr's....I repeat: Beer?halter is not a serious man! Please, no Guzan!

Who is the 17 year old?

A kid named Slonina who has done well with all the "unders" and apparently is #1 with the Chicago Fire.

Sean Johnson has wilted on the international stage several times, most notably at the Olympics. He’s done little to develop. Tremendous athlete and that’s enough for MLS but not enough for the Azteca or WC. And if that’s not enough of a negative, he went to UCF.

Both are injured. Horvath has played 5 competitive matches in the last 20 months iirc.
Here's hoping Turner is OK in time. I can't imagine having to play with Guzan in Berhalter's preferred style is a winning proposition no matter who we're playing.

In other words, we are basically screwed in goal. We will need about 6 or 7 center forwards to regain their scoring touch & start scoring goals in bunches. (In a pig's patootie!) Very concerned about our chances to qualify.

If you love watching the best in futbol, yesterday's match between Real Madrid & PSG in the Champions League was a thing of beauty. PSG goes in to the 2nd leg a goal up. In the 1st half, they are all over Madrid with Mbappe having two goals called back for offsides. He scores with his 3rd & it's (2-0-aggregate) starting the 2nd half. PSG is playing Neymar, Messi & Mbappe, while Madrid (only) has Karim Benzama. These 4 combine to be 40% of the top ten players on the planet. But Benzama promptly takes over the match, scores a hat-trick & Real Madrid bounces PSG from the Ch Lg. WOW!

Herr Tuchel has finally figured it out. He's played CP mostly forward on the left in the last few games & CP has rewarded him with 2 goals & 2 assists in the last 4. Here's Tuchel: "he has the ambition and natural hunger, ambition to arrive in the 6-yard box". Well hell, Tommy...you ought to know since he started attacking the net constantly while you were his coach at Dortmund.

Unfortunately for Josh Sargent & Norwich City, Chelsea plays them on Peacock TV this afternoon. I expect CP to cause major damage to the Canaries who are surely headed for the Championship Div. in England next season. It will take a miracle for them to stay up. Still, if Sargent continues to play well, some EPL or other club in Europe might pick him up.

Sargent has been so out of form as a scorer, he’s been moved to winger in a service role. I don’t know why people still think of him as the Great Red Hope.

Good news, looks like Reyna is healthy and has been training with no limitations for Dortmund and they list him as good to go to be included in the side this weekend. Now whether or not he plays is a different question.

I would prefer Sargent on the wing, maybe behind CP as a wingback or on the right side behind Reyna (if he plays). It's true he hasn't scored much for his club team, but his coach continues to start him for other skills he brings to the table. Such as passing, skill on the ball and defense.

An update on Ethan Horvath in the English Championship with Nottingham Forest. A 3-game suspension for their #1 goalie has given Horvath a shot with starts in their last 5. He's won 3 with 2 ties & given up only 1 goal. Their #1 is back but Horvath remains the starter based on his form.

. Is it finally time for Beer?halter to call Horvath up? No doubt about it, IMO, in view of Steffen & Turner injury issues. Beer?halter names the squad later this week. We'll see. Got some bum info...Nott Forest is not within 2 points of the top 3. They are kind of middle of the pack. Still, Horvath plays this Wednesday & another victory should catch Beer?halter's attention.

First, Yanks in the Prem relegation battle. Jesse Marsch's Leeds vs Josh Sargent's Norwich. It all came down to 5 minutes of extra time at the end. Norwich scores to tie in the 2nd minute of stoppage, then Leeds scores in the 4th minute to win it. Leeds puts more distance between them & the bottom 3 & Norwich sinks deeper into relegation. Marsh gets a good look at Sargent's play. Maybe Josh will end up at Leeds next season??

Everyone knows now about Chelsea's situation with Comrade Abramovich being sanctioned by the UK Gov't. Abramovich must sell the team and can't earn a dime from any Chelsea related activity. No sales of anything including tix to those not with season tickets. No sales or purchases of players (with 3 players out of contract) and the future of Chelsea FC as an ongoing concern still in doubt, although Chelsea gets a special dispensation from the UK Gov't to play the rest of the season.

CP was in the greatest form of his life & gets sick 3 weeks ago. Not in the squad until today on the bench. He gets in about the 78th minute & does ok in a late Chelsea win, 1-0, vs Newcastle. Hopefully CP gets a start before reporting to Beer?halter so he's in some semblance of shape before MNT camp.

Jordan Pefok up to 17 in 25 League matches & 22 in 37 all comps. How are Pepi, Aaronson, Ferriera, Morris &/or Zardes doing lately?? Just sayin, Beer?halter.

From the UK Gov't: We are working around the clock to enable Chelsea FC to continue operating as a club in the interest of the fans".

For all those Houston fans: Tillman Fertitta shows "tepid" interest (in buying Chelsea). Ha!

NY Jets owner Woody Johnson is also said to be interested in Chelsea. That should scare the hell out of every Chelsea fan.

Sargent not on the roster for final three quals per his club.

Gregg will release his sheet today.

This is unbelievable. Norwich doesn't have a prayer to avoid relegation, yet his coach insists on keeping him around & missing the 3 most important matches for his country to date. This is assuming Beer?halter had any plan to call him up in the first place.

I'm guessing Ethan Horvath is a lock to be called up, particularly after another victory for Nott. Forest over QPR yesterday, 3-1.

The club has to release. He was designated a reserve by GB so the club announced that early to reassure their fans after the loss to Leeds.

Goalkeepers: Ethan Horvath (Nottingham Forest), Sean Johnson (New York City FC), Zack Steffen (Manchester City)

Defenders: Reggie Cannon (Boavista), Sergino Dest (Barcelona), Aaron Long (New York Red Bulls), Erik Palmer-Brown (Troyes), Antonee Robinson (Fulham), Miles Robinson (Atlanta United), James Sands (Rangers), DeAndre Yedlin (Inter Miami), Walker Zimmerman (Nashville SC)

Midfielders: Kellyn Acosta (LAFC), Tyler Adams (RB Leipzig), Gianluca Busio (Venezia), Luca de la Torre (Heracles), Yunus Musah(Valencia), Cristian Roldan (Seattle Sounders)

Forwards: Brenden Aaronson (Red Bull Salzburg), Paul Arriola (FC Dallas), Jesus Ferreira (FC Dallas), Jordan Morris (Seattle Sounders FC), Jordan Pefok (Young Boys), Ricardo Pepi (Augsburg), Christian Pulisic (Chelsea), Gio Reyna (Borussia Dortmund), Tim Weah (Lille)

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a U.S. roster that thin in the midfield.

Sands, Arriola, Ferreira, Roldan, & Acosta worry me as always, but the rest are the best Beer?halter could do at this time. So it's sink or swim with this group and I like our chances.

Scratch Sergino Dest from this line-up as he has a hamstring or ankle injury from a match yesterday.

Because there is some flexibility with who the US has listed as forwards. Aaronson, Reyna, and Pulisic could all realistically line up at the 8 or 10 positions. As for the CBS, look for Miles Robinson and Zimmerman to get the bulk of pt in those spots and Dest/A Robinson at the outside fullback spots. What I don't want to see Berhalter do is run Dest and Robinson out there against Mexico and then decide that Cannon and Yedlin (or more likely Sands) play against Panama. I also don't want to see Berhalter treat the Mexico game as a lost game before it starts and run out the backups to get trounced and going all in vs Panama at home. That's a sure fire way to put more pressure on your squad than there needs to be

Dest is hurt. On the squad but likely not available.

More good news on an American in Europe. Jesse Marsch and his brand new club, Leeds Utd., were pretty much given up for dead in the EPL. Leeds has now won 2 in a row and are 7 points clear of the drop zone with just a few games left in the season.

My least favorite Mex Int'l , Raul Jiminez for Wolverhampton, screws his team out of at least a point by getting a 2nd yellow, Leeds score 3 unanswered and beat Wolves 3-2.

That's the 2nd time Jimenez has picked up double yellows this season. The previous time he picked up 2 in about 45 seconds as he had a cynics foul to stop a break and then he stepped in front of the free kick w/o giving the requisite space. He's not a very smart player

No John Brooks which I don't understand. Beer?halter at least gave him the news on the phone. "In poor form, not playing for his club team (not true lately, btw), blah, blah, etc. So we get Aaron Long (is he match fit??) and Erik Palmer-Brown with very little intl experience. If just for leadership and experience if nothing else-why not Brooks who really wanted this?

Having said this, I'm OK with Long if he's recovered fully from injury. And E. Palmer-Brown is interesting. I've watched his last two Ligue Un matches for Troyes and he's played very well (although earlier this week he cost his team with a bad tackle in the box & a PK). Very athletic (6'2" & 194) which makes up for lack of experience-most of the time!!!

Just unbelievable! Tim Weah hasn't played much the last 3 weeks but gets the start today vs. Nantes. I'm thinking ...great, he's going to get 90 today to help fitness with MNT. But noooooooo! The absolute worst straight red card I've ever seen and Weah gets tossed about the 65th min. He slides after a ball, kicks a pass 5-yards to a teammate and a defender then trips over him.

The match commentators were certain VAR would overrule and were speechless when it didn't. So was I. Lille plays a man down for 30 minutes & survives for a 1-0 victory. At least he'll be ready to rock come the 24th.

A possible problem with Capt'n America. He steps funny just before halftime. Stays in and also after the break. But gets subbed out after 60 minutes. Who knows if this is another ankle thing that might develop into a Qualifier issue.

Don't worry, Ferreira will pick up the slack, or Zardes will be called up to replace Aaronson. Either will save our bacon...NOT!
