UCONN Game Thread

Igbanu is my player of the game. He’s done so many of the little things to win extra possession, gritty rebounds, clutch FTs, etc.

Now 10 minutes of OT, one basket, and the lead.

This is crazy.

Whew. I'm going to go glass half full and say this was a good win to be able to pull this out without much help from our stars. 30 from Henderson is what we hoped we might see when we got him

I don’t think UCONN is a good team but to get down 6 with less than a minute in regulation, force OT and then eventually win? That’s a MAJOR confidence boost for the players and will help as the stretch toughens up.

Defend the home court, steal some on the road, that’s how you do well in conference. So far we’ve done that and we have another good shot at a road steal on the weekend.

I was thinking the same thing about comparing it to the Cincy loss. If we can get a win at Memphis Saturday we could really start to build something here. One thing I absolutely Love is joiners attitude whether he’s making shots or not.

Also if you take a look at various UCONN twitter accounts (media, writers, fans, etc), you’ll get quite the laugh. They are extremely butthurt, but somehow still trying to act high and mighty.

All time series now tied 4-4, so they can kindly eat dook.

I don't like to double post from the alley but with this type win I wanted to share it here as well.

1. Haith put his 5 best players on the floor at the same time and kept them late. We all saw it. The best 5 are Igbanu, Etou, Henderson, Taplin, and Joiner.
2. Henderson MVP easily especially with the two crucial threes in the last one minute of regulation, We lose by 10 without him.
3. Adams one assist short of a triple-double. Wow what a player and Ollie doesn't let him touch the ball the last 4.2 seconds of regulation or with 22 seconds left in second OT. (Vital takes them)
4. 12 seconds left down one and UCONN to inbound and Wheeler nudges player to make him lose balance and throw ball away.
5. Joiner missing that second free throw in OT may have been good since UCONN would have had more time to score and win if rebound didn't bounce around for three seconds.
6. Artison was perfection the first half. A little disappointed I didn't see him again the second.
7. Jeffries could not hold on to the ball (and we know why)
8. I wish we had stayed with the match-up zone when we had the six point lead. We tried man to man for too long and it looked like our Lamar defense as UCONN caught up and went ahead. Back to zone and we stopped them.
9. Won the rebound game again. That was crucial. Also getting the big guy to foul out with only 3-4 minutes of total playing time.
10. Good for the home crowd and the team to win one like this. I have not seen a more enjoyable win at home in a long time like that. Reminded me of Tony Heard at SMU.

I saw some of those tweets. They’re just bent out of shape because the rest of the Big East ditched them and took their balls to other places.

Poorly coached teams.
Tulsa can't make free throws and turn the ball over way too much - both are signs of a poorly coached team. UCONN sucks. Tulsa sucks more...

INSANITY: doing same thing and expecting different results. Frank Haith and Company to a "T".
We wore the white uni's and they wore the navy uni's with UCONN on the front. And oh by the way we went into Double OT. The reason I'm cluing you in on this is I think you were watching another game. Silly, stupid rabbit.

Double OT
13 TO 69.4% FT

PS
Don't come back here after you watch the real game.

Zit obtained a one machine and watched the women’s game?

El Zitto always struck me as a WNBA fan.

I like the smell of big fish and napalm in the microwave.

I think it should also be noted that he was at the 1 assist shy mark prior to going into OT. Zero assists in the final 10 minutes.

Every play went through Adams in the 2 OTs. Ollie wanted the ball in his hands and his hands alone. Joiner did an exceptional job on stopping his dribble drive in the zone during the OTs (with the small exception of the Red Sea parting and he got all the way to the rim, Etou started to help and then stopped and picked up a foul anyway. Either commit to hammering him and not allow the shot at all or just let him get his 2 points.

That said Larrere and Vital did get to touch the ball a couple of times but they went all Thunder in the OT. No movement and no one passing the ball. Every play seemed to start and end with an iso, 1 v 1 play for them.

Were there mistakes made by both teams? Yes. Was the game a lot of fun to watch? Yes!

No, this team isn’t going to make a sweet 16 run, but they are a lot of fun to watch. I know some of you are bound and determined to point out everything negative you can possibly think of (tugrad06 syndrome), but there are more positives than negatives.

However, if you must have something to be angry about, be angry about the “fans” who don’t show up to games. 3900 for a game against a team that won the national championship several years ago is pathetic. I can sort of understand our football attendance issues, but there is no excuse for the hoops attendance issue... unless everyone has the same “we suck unless we go to the elite 8 yearly” attitude some of you have.

We will need to get on a 7- 9 game winning streak before we can get a good crowd, just the way it is in Tulsa, fans are very fickle. I am still not sold on the team yet, we haven't beaten anybody that good yet. We will have our shot though, but we HAVE TO WIN those games

The crowd is just different. More entertainment options, more demands on time, and a different generation of fans. I think it will keep getting worse before it gets better. I hate that and want the place filled every night, but this is a common problem across the country.

I think TU could try to improve the value of its product some, but they are even doing that with crazy ticket deals. Losing the opener to Lamar doesn’t help that value proposition.

I will say that the people who are coming are a lot more fun than the bluehairs of yesteryear and they do get into the games, when they come.

The student attendance is another issue. They are turrible. When I was in school, it was the main thing on campus. Now there are a lot of people who graduate who go in the Reynolds Center only when they matriculate and graduate.

Tulsa sports fans in general are fickle. I think TU fans have high expectations for basketball and are tired of being disappointed. Keep winning, get in the top 25 and/or make it nice NIT run or advance in the NCAA’s and I think attendance will start to look up.

The student section was always packed at the old Convention Center too...and there were also a lot of students who just went and found seats in other places too. It’s sort of pathetic at football and basketball games. Like most of these kids just have no idea they were so sheltered or whatever in high school. There’s no rowdiness. There’s not even any school pride. Sometimes that needs to be taught...
