Anyone else following this disaster ? I’ve never seen anything like it. Pictures are heartbreaking. Mayor is in hiding. i can’t imagine living in one of those neighborhoods.

The lovely mayor did not show up at the public hearings on the tragedy in NOLA today. She's a piece of work.
The police chief was in attendance but she said she wouldn't be answering any questions.
Lot of angry citizens and peeved city council members at the meeting.
I will be surprised if the police chief keeps her position or doesn't resign.
They have the Super Bowl in four weeks and Mardi Gras three weeks later.

I get so tired of republicans idiots saying the official doesn't know what she's saying without even going into the matter, and asking questions. It's just a meme for them. She sounded like she was reading from a script & didn't realize that they didn't put the web address in the speech. You could read that and not realize for a decent while that the web address wasn't there. She didn't sound out of it. She sounded like she read what was in front of her, and mainly concentrated on reading it properly and with confidence, not paying attention to what she was reading as attentively as she should have. Maybe she has mental problems, but she's only 71, and I doubt it.

Meanwhile, Trump blames it on California’s water conservation use for “worthless fish”….

Funny how he only seems to care about the environmental byproducts of industry when it’s a wind turbine.

If you’re keeping score at home birds > fish in Trump land.

….but if he is okay with killing off the fish what are all of the eagles going to eat? Does that mean he’s actually okay with killing the birds too? It’s paradox of douchebaggery.

so which is more important to save, a fish or thousands of million dollar homes? who pay for it now? Will Cali create a new tax. please Insurance company, i live in AZ, don't raise my ratesbecause of local incompetence
Those homes are not really million dollar homes. The land is million dollar land. The home itself is often cheaper.

As far as fish go, the same argument can be made for literally any critical industry…. Everyone thinks they should be allowed to take environmental shortcuts so they can achieve a desired outcome. Who decides that it’s okay to kill fish but not eagles?

what happened to Bidens Infrastructure "Build Back Better" money? Seems like preparing for something like this should have been a high. priority

too many Social Programs, not enough Structure programs

The problem with Cali is they won’t clear the brush (fuel). They won’t do control burns (environmental). They won’t retain water in their reservoirs (again environmental). Mayor cut the fire budget by $17M last year. They couldn’t get water to the worst affected areas. Everyone involved in this cluster should lose their jobs…some will but not enough.

The problem is there is not enough water to go around.

The state of prescribed fires doubled between '21 & '23. They are upping their budget from 2.5B between to 4B between now & 2028. They added 16 helicopters and 7 air tankers to their fleet. and doubled their use of drones, and have been utilizing ai to address what to do about it. They have increased their fire fighter budget massively, and are in the midst of hiring 2000 more firefighters over the next five years. Maybe they are not moving fast enough, but they are not sitting on their aSS. Unlike Trump who procedes to blame them, and offer no beneficial advice or federal action/assistance. The blame game doesn't do the situation any benefit.

They were apparently warned

I'm not talking city budget, this is a far bigger issue than a city budget. This is a state issue, and should be a federal issue as well. Every states insurance will go up now. There should be federal involvement as well. Do you not think there were state firefighters there as well as city. That is addressing it on too low a level. I'm sure city cuts were not good, but they weren't the only issue involved. The responsibility is not just at the city level.

budget cuts: hydrants with no water, too few firetruck, too few trained crews, . . .

blah, blah, blah, I have no clue what I'm talking about, it's all the democrats fault, they should have a charity fire department, i add nothing to the conversation, I'm just a greedy old curmudgeon who has nothing better to do, than scream my tired old rants on here over and over., get off of my lawn, I'm just an a0.

I do agree there but the cuts in the city budget fall directly on our good absentee mayor. That money could/should have been used to clear those hillsides. I’m not sure it would have mattered how many fire fighters were there btw. When you fail to clear the dead undergrowth either manually or with controlled burns you have a pending disaster. That falls squarely on the city and the state. They control the environmental restrictions in the city and state. There’s also no excuse for not having water to properly fight those fires. Again…that’s a city and state issue. Many voices were warning of this impending disaster. California ignored them. That’s 100% on them.
