Grade: "B"
He brought some energy straight away to the team, which was sorely needed. I'm a big fan of Hurricane Monte, but the OP asked for an eval, so...
His staff has done a good job coaching certain positions. Dane Evans (QB) is a key example, he has vastly improved his form and footwork as well as his decision making (he actually goes through progressions sometimes!). Others remain dubious - tackling is an issue, our DBs are incredibly soft, etc.
Play calling is improved, but does become too predictable from time to time. The stats on our play calling propensity are painful (e..g, run between the tackles 75% on first down). We also rarely run anything creative. But those limitations may be because he lacks confidence in the personnel to do what he wants to do.
It also seems that our style changes based on the opponent or maybe his mood? We play up to most of our competition, and down to others. Sometimes we are in it to win it, and losing by 21 is no different than losing by 7--- so go for it. Other times we go really conservative against more average competition.
Same goes for the hurry up. We are capable of really moving the ball and running play after play after play. But usually we are at a more manageable pace. It seems our hurry up really puts the defense on their heals, not sure why we don't push more often.
Overall, we are vastly improved and I am happy. We are ahead of where I thought we would be in year 1. But so far I am not "wowed" by anything - that's not a bad thing and he has exceeded expectations, but I guess the back of my mind hoped that we went rock star straight away. I acknowledge he is learning on the job in many respects and that he doesn't have the personnel he has become used to. And hell, most of the teams we have lost to are very difficult competition.
Lets see how recruiting goes. Year 3 is the key to any coach evaluation IMHO.
