How can home attendance be increased?

Bring back re-entry....allow cooler passes to be sold so you can bring in coolers and don’t do the dumb clear bag policy.
Well the option of not having a clear bag policy has gone by the wayside with a psycho threatening to shoot up a TU game still technically on the loose.

But hey Gov. Stitt, everyone can own a gun with no background check and carry wherever they want, because hell, we want to be Dodge City, KS in the 1800s

However, the re-entry and the cooler permit/pass would be an interesting twist. $20, you can bring your own cooler, up to 32 qts and stock it with whatever you can fit in it. You want beer in it, so be it, water...so be it, a Coke so you don't have to buy Pepsi...so be it. Maybe you just have the person buy a ticket for the cooler. Have a specific area where you can bring said cooler and have it checked.

Seriously, as someone with 2 kids, a cooler pass for a game would be great.

You know that most of those old west towns required people to check their guns with the sheriff when they came into town?

Yeah...they were also incredibly inaccurate, even from 10 paces, and they only had 6 bullets (max) and required a trigger pull for each time you wanted to fire. OK believes any psycho nutjob should be able to own as many guns as they want including those that can fire off 100 rounds in 30 seconds.

This is a Cross Fire topic, but even in the founding fathers' writings concerning the Bill of Rights and the Constitution that they essentially used as propaganda to get the individual states to approve the new Constitution, they expressly wrote this was only about making sure Americans were ready to fight off the Brits if they ever came back to reclaim the colonies they lost.

This works pretty well at Nascar. No additional charge required.

Interesting.

But you need to throw a bone to the athletic dept. who derives a lot of revenue from concessions. You would need to assume that most people, if they go and buy anything from the concession stands would probably spend between $10-$20 minimum. I know my family, if the game starts at a time when it crosses over a lunch or dinner period, we're spending $30 easy. So charge the $20 to bring in your own cooler and people are thinking they're getting a great deal. 4 bottles of water is $14 at a game and you'd be lucky if it's cold. We'd probably pack anywhere between 8-12 drinks and the $20 saves us about $10-15 bucks depending on what type of drinks we're bringing in.

And my wife brought up a good point about people who bring babies/toddlers to games. Are they holding them to the clear bag policy? If they do they will likely lose those fans because anyone who has brought up kids knows that the diaper bag is a lifeboat of everything POSSIBLY needed to keep that little person happy for 3.5 hours.

His plan was to wait til people left and shoot them from the outside of the stadium...just proves how dumb the clear bag policy is...it doesn’t stop anything but people sneaking in snacks and drinks and makes it more of a pain in the ass for people who buy tickets to attend a sporting event. That’s why more people stay home or just tailgate and leave.

I know what the plan was...I read the article. Seriously, the dude needs to be locked up and not see the light of day again whether he's locked long term at Laureate or a CCA facility.

Per the clear bag policy FAQ:

What about diaper bags? Diaper bags are permissible, but they will be inspected and tagged by security at the medical lane at their entry gate.

Did someone say marching band?

And to think that Brian Kelly somehow figure things out enough to still be in South Bend 9 years later. I was for certain that Notre Dame and it's fans would throw an all-out hissy fit about losing to Tulsa...and doing so directly because of the coach's ego, that he would be fired at the end of that season. That TU team had some damn football players on it.

Good to know. Not that it benefits us any more as my kids are 8 and 13 now. But it is good to know that the TU admin hasn't lost all of its common sense

Mine are a little older than yours, but we always found the diaper bag checks to be the most haphazardly applied policy at the gates. There were several times that we were told "No Animal Crackers Allowed" but we could just go to another gate and get waved right through.

Hell, my kids diaper bags and later, backpacks, were what we used to smuggle drinks, snacks, etc. in for the rest of us. Dress the girl up like a cheerleader, tuck a couple of blue and gold pompoms on top of the bag, and no one bats an eye. Seriously, kids with backpacks could be the next most dangerous thing in America.

That's funny. My daughter actually mentioned waving her blue and gold pom poms at games as a child on her application for admission to the University. Yours could do the same one day.

Yeah, it's crazy he's still there. There was a woman probably in her 70's who was a Notre Dame fan came up to us as we were loading up the bus and basically told me she was glad we won because she didn't care for Brian Kelly. I was just glad we made it out of the stadium without having to fight our way out.

Kelly belongs in the same cell as the TU shooter lunatic for killing that kid. And there’s no doubt in my mind as a former prosector and criminal defense attorney the kid was murdered by being made to stay on that scaffolding.

As of right now she wants to be a vet, so she probably will end up at OSU (I just threw up a little bit in my mouth), Iowa State, or Mizzou.

My son wants to go to MIT. We'll see how that goes. He's smart but he has no idea how to study. Everything is just natural for him. And both my kids are the type that remember every little thing they've ever seen or heard, unless you tell them to clean their room or do another chore. Those are forgotten with ease

That was a rough deal. Could you actually make a murder charge stick in that case though and what would the probability be that you could get a conviction out of it?

Would depend on the case law concerning the culpability level of causing a death by negligence. In Florida, he would have been looking at life in prison without parole - assuming he wasn’t coaching at UF, FSU or Miami, sadly.

A perfect & expensive way to increase attendance at TU football games, virtual robot attendance, like they are using for the Tokyo olympics. So now you can attend the game from the comfort of your living room. Perfect for the lazy Tulsa sports fan.

From the immortal Al Davis, "Just win baby"
Nope. We've already tried that. 2010, beat Notre Dame on the road, no one came the week after. 2012- one of the best defenses in the country, won a ton of games, conference champs, no one came...even to the CUSA Championship game where we played a future NFL 1st round draft pick. 2016- super exciting record setting offense, we won 10 games and a bowl game (and probably should have had 2 more wins...thanks AAC refs), and no one came.

It doesn’t matter how much we win. Tulsa is the laziest sports town I’ve ever seen. They use excuses NOT to come.

Exactly. I literally cross 71st St at 169 every time I come to a game and every Saturday, between 9am-8pm that street is bumper to bumper in both directions. People would rather go to the mall/Target/Old Navy than come to a game. Cinemark is always packed and it 's not even really cheaper to go to a movie anymore when you consider the deals you can get on tickets to TU games. And our concessions are cheaper. And if people gripe about the damn parking again I'm gonna sic Trey Barnett and his husband on them. These are the same people that will walk 2 miles to get to the fair and not have to pay to park, walk 5 miles around the fair in search of a funnel cake coated in lard, fried in lard, and sprinkled with deep fried pork rinds and then wait in line for 40 minutes to ride a roller coaster that may or may not tip over with too much weight on one side.

FSU won the national championship and 3,000 people dropped season tickets the following year. They have 20,000 empty season seats right now. They took out 7,500 end zone bench seats to install 4,000 membership seat backs where you could purchase alcohol. Half of those are unsold and membership interest is so low, they are betraying those season ticket holders who already bought tickets to the tune $5,000 a pop just to have the right to purchase alcohol, by offering wine and beer in limited areas elsewhere in the stadium. Imagine being locked into paying $5,000 for a loge seat for ten years at Chapman then three years later they announce you can buy beer in the funzone. And now pot is legal in their stadium too.

The American economy is changing as well as the prevailing attitudes about personal comfort and connectivity. It’s too expensive to drop $100 on a game, but spending $4,000 to $10,000 on a TV and leather chairs, etc. is “saving” money. Conference rules on broadcasts of instant replay inside the stadium don’t help. You used to go to the game because you didn’t want to “miss” the action. A large number of people, in addition to being old, tired, and/or cheap don’t want to come to the game because they might “miss” a big play or replay that is captured better by TV. And there’s the dudes that would rather stay home and listen to Andre Ware talk about the game rather than sit in the stadium with their wife and hear her complain about the heat, parking, and how much she’d rather be in Stillwater.

Winning doesn’t cure those problems. It helps, but until we start consistently beating teams with elite talent and/or have an entertaining offense, it’s not going to get better at the gate. 6 home wins against FCS and Tulane etc doesn’t move the needle, especially if we go 6-7 on the year. They could give away chicken fried steak on a stick and free beer and TU alums in Jenks would still stay home.

On a quasi related note: Tulane has lowered prices on many of their concessions items (including alcohol). Example: $2 hotdogs and $3 beers.

Maybe something TU should consider.

To address the question originally posed in this thread, there is probably nothing we can do to more than marginally improve football attendance or turn around the drastic loss of fans in the stands that has occurred in recent years. Attendance is down at football programs all over the country. We are more affected by the trend because our fan base was so small to begin with. Winning more consistently against higher quality opponents, improving the game-day experience, more and better promotions, and more effective advertising might indeed increase attendance a little but not much. The leisure-time culture in this country is changing. There is far more competition for the entertainment dollar than ever before. Long gone are the days when all we had to worry about was a single college football broadcast on ABC and the occasional conflict with a home game at OU or OSU. Now, between cable TV and streaming, a football fan can watch almost every game played on a single Saturday. But expanded football offerings are just part of the problem. How many families that spend a Saturday at the Gathering Place might once have gone to a football game? How many families go to a music festival or just stay at home with their noses buried in their Ipods?

I hate what's happening with TU's football (and basketball) attendance, but I think it may not be fixable.

Stated much better than I. I would also throw in the emergence in the last 10 or so years of structured children’s activities almost 24/7 that they aren’t in school. Mom used to tell Dad to take the boys to the game to get them all out of the house. The average 14 year old knows what his Saturdays in October looks like right now and he generally doesn’t have time for Dad much less TU. Travel soccer, test prep, church youth group, that annoying girl he texts on his phone at all hours, whatever. Kids are over booked. Makes it impossible for Dad to get to the game most of the time.

Your constant negativity gets REALLY old. We are almost a week from game 1. Let’s cut it out for a while sound good?

Just saying tell the whole story. And I am far from constant negativity. And I still buy my tickets and go to every game as my kids' schedule allows me to.

We can’t manage service with our current pricing structure. If we did that, I can only imagine the implosion that would occur.

I read that as an increase in total number but you could be correct.

In general I think there is a boost for two reasons. As my brother said, he likes Monty, he wants him to make it, but if he doesn't win this year he's going to get fired and unfortunately for a good reason. I think that is kind of the general feeling. It's his last chance and some people want to show him support. The OSU tickets, for lots of people TU is the second team with OU and OSU their first team. With the OSU ticket price being high we will see these fans in orange at the home opener and if we put out a good team in blue for the other games.

We have won, but it hasn't been consistent which means we haven't been able to build momentum, the same reason Haith's tenure hasn't seen a bounce back from the slow death Woj was giving us.

We need to win a couple years in a row and not just with an upset and regression to see how the city will respond. For the record the AAC was one of the few conferences that saw an overall increase in attendance last year.
