Head Coaching Candidates For Tu Basketball

How/why do we get stuck with mediocre coaches. I don't expect a national championship, but we should vie for the conference title. Be competitive on the field. Make post season appearances. Be fun to watch.

I've been watching TU sports since 1950 and this is the pits.

We literally won a conference title last year.

We won a share of the title last year, though we finished seeded third in the conference tournament because we couldn’t finish the season like we needed to. Also we had no shot at an at-large bid and would have needed to win the tournament to dance...

It’s like Doug bragging that he made the NIT for the two seasons prior to him being fired. Last year’s team was basically an NIT squad, but it’s not like they were an NIT Squad on their ways to better things. Literally the BEST that Haith could do given 4 years (plus an extra covid season) of a full rebuild with 100% his kids is make the NIT and secure a 3rd seed in the conference tournament. In those same 5 years with his own players, he posted two losing seasons and no other post season appearances. That’s abysmal. (Let’s not forget that, as Harmon says, Haith had much better rosters on paper than Wojcik did as well and he made fewer post seasons and posted more losing seasons)

For example, Paul Mills at ORU has a similar track record (2 losing seasons, one Post season appearance) but he inherited a complete rebuild from scratch and a ton more recruiting difficulties due to being a coach at a religious school.

Rollo said this is the first year that haith didn’t do better than predicted and was 7th this year and picked 6th and that Tulsa will be a great team next year if Brandon joiner and Richie come back ???? What world are Frank Rollo and Bruce living in???????
I've been out of the loop bout all things TU since Thursday.

Rollo didn't see the merit of Jackson returning?

If so that says something bout his assessment.

Miller and McCasland both win their conference and make the NCAA Tournament.

If you have doubts, look at our signees. We have NO inside game but we did not recruit a player for this position. We have NO shooters but we did not recruit one. Haith recruited the same player that he already has on the team. This guy does not work hard and shows that by being complacent.

At this point which is more critical to the future of TU athletics?

Keeping Haith
for one more season and firing him next year when he doesn't produce.

Or Losing
more TU fan base and credibility this year?

Keeping him for another year without an extension would be worse than extending him or firing him.

He has not motivation to recruit and recruits won’t want to go to a school knowing the coaching staff will be gone.

I think his track record speaks for itself. Why must we continue to suffer.

I want to be proud of TU basketball again.
I want it to be fun.
I want the team/season to be exciting.

It wouldn't matter anyway.... whatever recruits we got would be unlikely to stay with the new coach. Especially in today's transfer climate where they would be unlikely to sit out at their next school.

Good point. It’d be hard to recruit talent that with a lame duck.

It just delays the inevitable for another season.

My dream is we get a new coach that runs offensive plays, aggressive defense (lots of steals, even if it allows easy buckets at times), and can convince Joiner, Rachal, and Jackson to stay another year. All of that is probably too much to ask or get though unfortunately.

As sad as I am to say it, if you were ever going to let a coach walk without extending him, this would be the season, because of the free transfer rule and all of the extra Seniors available. It would make retooling a squad much more doable. You'd really need to get a coach that has some good relationships with kids though.

68 teams in the big dance.
16 teams in the nit.
16? Teams in the cbi.

100 teams in post season, but not us.

Memphis and Smu got Nit Bids with a 16 team Nit this year. So we swept an Nit team and beat a 2 seed in the ncaa 😂

IF TU & Haith parted ways
Some Top Asst Coaches (in the Area)
That might “Light” a fire under TU

David Patrick (45), Arkansas (Gr Recruiter, on a lot of HCoaching radars)

Ross Hodge (39?), North Texas (3 straight 20 win seasons Conf USA chumps/NCAA bid)

Kyan Brown (41?), North Dakota State (ORU asst/player, @ NDSU ’19 Ncaa/’20 Conf Chumps)

Cliff Warren (53), Georgia State ( 2 Ncaa @ G Stt, 9yrs HC exp @ Jk St)

Wade Mason (41?), Stephen F. Austin (A players coach/OU & ORU stints)

Norm Roberts (55), Kansas (One last grasp to yesterday?)

Either Sutton? (Sean 52, Scott 50) (2nd chances can B Grand)

David Cason, FIU (Carries the Oh No Wojo Albatross )

Dollar Bill.
It's a mess at KU. Now a new AD needs to be hired. NCAA hasn't made a decision on Bill's team. Probably only get a slap on the wrist.
He always speaks fondly of his time at Tulsa.
Can't be told yes, if you don't ask.
I know, it's crazy.

Rick Pitino would be the hire that generates publicity and excitement! It would be on the same level as Sampson at Houston. If not , look at Kellen Sampson.

I agree that Haith's time is (or should be) up, but I wouldn't downplay the co-championship so much. It's a much bigger deal than consecutive NIT appearances (lol at Dougie).

I know, we weren't on the NCAA Tourney at-large radar even with a co-championship, mostly because of some bad losses that made us far too uneven for consideration. That's on Haith, and his usual problem of generally playing to the level of the competition coupled with dropping winnable games by playing not to lose when we go up ten with ten minutes left. But getting even a share of the regular season championship in this conference is still a major accomplishment, even if we somehow manage to back into it despite ourselves.

Before someone argues, I'm not saying it earns Haith more years on his contract. It has to be taken within the context of the product as a whole over the last 5 years and its trajectory. And that is far more mediocre, as you point out. The conference championship last year is a bright spot in an otherwise middling resume.

No to Rick Pitino.

Undeniably good coach, and would make news for sure. But waaaayy too much ego and he's 70 years old and might not want to work more than another five years. Also, he'd want his own mint, even though he is damaged goods. And the things he was accused of are not things that we want the stench of at TU. It wasn't about frequent phone calls like Sampson. It was about open bribery and providing escort services for recruits. Ick.

I wouldn't have minded hyping the co-championship if we hadn't ended up as the worst of the 3 co-champions in terms of seeding for the conference tournament. At the end of the season we were the only team that controlled its destiny to win the championship outright and we choked at Wichita State, and it wasn't even a close choke. We did something similar in Harrison's final season when we choked against a Memphis team that had basically given up on Josh Pastner. That loss almost threw us out of the NCAA tournament (it was a historical anomaly that it didn't) and it certainly dropped us into the play in game.

That Memphis one I put directly on Haith, because we struggled inside that vs Memphis in every matchup that season (mostly due to depth issues as Rashad Smith was injured late in the year)... and guess who was redshirting on our bench that entire time? A junior T.K. Edogi. Haith argued that Edogi needed more time to mature as a player... but we only got one more season out of T.K. who then walked to Iona as a graduate transfer so he could (much like Jeriah Horne this season) play in the NCAA tournament at a difference school. We simultaneously shot ourselves in the foot one season, just so we could shoot ourselves in the foot again two seasons later.

(In fairness to Haith, maybe Edogi had some issue that we didn't know about during that redshirt season i.e... grades or injury.... but it really didn't seem like it considering he graduated on time and that he was practicing that season)

Prohm is officially available. Not sure he’s the answer. He’s a good basketball coach but his recruiting star may be tarnished
