Danny Manning Fired at Wake Forest

Adrian Hernandez has got this. Dave Wojcik knows a guy who says he’s pretty good.

I wonder today what Pooh and Kwanza thought about his signing. It certainly set the stage for similar recruiting to continue for the next two years.

So how did they wait this long and not have the buyout agreed with Manning? Were they waiting on PPP to come in?

Waited until after signing day and when he struggled again there, he was removed.

If Forbes doesn't bring it around, it will start to look like Kansas football.(The place where coaches go to die.)

If Forbes can win at Wake, our failure to hire him last year might be the third biggest mistake of TU basketball coaching history. # 1 was failing to hire Billy Gillispie instead of Buzz Peterson, # 2 was failing to even interview a begging Buzz Williams for a coaching spot instead of Wojcik. These three coaches might be some of the nation's best recruiters.

Anyone of those mistakes would have kept us in the game for a lot of the past 20 years. Billy Gillespie would have pushed us a lot closer to Gonzaga status, seeing as how it was right after Self. It would have put us in much better position to hire someone other than Phillips when he left.

We could have gotten Buzz Williams really cheap as he was an assistant to Gillispie at A&M. He wanted an interview so bad and our AD would not give him one. Resume now is Head coach at Marquette, Va Tech, Texas A&M and one of the top 10 recruiters in the nation. True he would have left, but all our National Champion coaches left after a few years.

Wait, so even though Haith just won a conference championship for us, you guys still think it would have been a good idea to fire him before last season and replace him with Forbes, who we don’t know will be successful. In addition to having to shell out the money for Haith’s buyout and the money to pay Forbes. That is a frankly ludicrous idea.

Even for Forbes, Wake is a tough job.
Truth, not because he isn't a good coach but you try to recruit the heart of the ACC on a tiny campus (Wake is very similar to TU in a lot of ways) 50-60 miles from NC State, Duke, and UNC. Now you're stuck in a conference with 15 basketball members including Notre Dame. Finishing higher than 8th will be a monumental task at Wake Forest even in the best years.

Not sure how Haith buyout was structured. It was my understanding that it went down to nearly nothing depending on performance. Not sure if that meant conference championship or NCAA tournament birth (which we were still likely to miss).

Hindsight. One year ago there is no possible way anyone on this board says "Ya know, I think Haith can win the AAC regular season title next year." NO ONE ON THIS BOARD SAID THAT. I think we were all hoping we might be able to hit the top 4-5, especially after losing Jeffries and the surprise transfer by Curran Scott. 18-14 and 8-10 in the AAC combined with only 1 NCAA appearance and the number of transfers and the reliance on transfers as the bulk of your recruiting probably would have been able to justify a change in many people's minds if they wanted to. The fact that Haith is a generally likeable guy and coach is a plus, his teams haven't been god awful and usually pretty competitive within the AAC is another plus for him. But the problem for TU started when they hired Buzz Peterson. That kicked off the sequence of 3 coaches in 3 years and TU rushing to hire someone they felt would not leave for at least 3-4 years.

Butterfly effects. We keep talking about Butterfly effects all because some dude was Michael Jordan's roommate in college.
