I was incorrect in having CA on the list. CA is about even on the money it gives and the money it gets (my guess is the number of military installations, national parks, and interstates ). The 6 states that give a lot more than they receive are: CT, MA, NY, NJ, IL, WA (ND, CO, NE, & NH also give more than they receive but just barely). CT tops it at getting only .74 for every dollar they pay. There are 23 states who get way more than they give. OK is in the middle of that. Louisiana, Mississippi, Kentucky, and Virginia top that list (I am guessing because of the number of Federal installations and offices located in VA, that's what the money gets allocated for there). There are several different articles. The Atlantic had one in June of this year. There are several different independent tax watchdog groups that have reported it in different ways as number of tax dollars paid to the Fed gov't and another that indicates number of tax dollars give as a function of per dollar paid (see the CT figure above). I want to say one of the Dakotas got like $8 in federal money for every $1 paid. All of the info is not on the same website so you sort of have to jump between to piece the info together.
