From Underdog Dynasty...
Put it on the board. Another Power 5 upset for the AAC. Well, two actually. Memphis beat UCLA this weekend, but USF also beat Illinois. As you can see, one win is better than the other, and that was enough to shake up the top spot this week.
1. Memphis (2-0, LW: #4)
Quarterback Riley Ferguson and wide receiver Anthony Miller put on a show in the Tigers’ 48-45 upset of #25 UCLA. Ferguson went stride for stride with UCLA quarterback Josh Rosen, and Miller made a few ridiculous catches. The big win vaults them to the top spot, and it will be difficult to get them off.
2. USF (3-0, LW: #1)
Another slow start for the Bulls, but this one wasn’t nearly as bad. A Power 5 win usually is a good one, but it seems that feeling was diminished because it was against Illinois. Still, the Bulls are undefeated and got a good performance from quarterback Quinton Flowers.
3. Houston (2-0, LW: #3)
Kyle Allen is showing their isn’t much rust on his game, and finished 31-for-33 against Rice. The defense looked dominant in their 38-3 win at home, and now they have their sights on another Power 5 win. Texas Tech comes to town, and the Cougars will need to play well defensively to keep the Red Raiders off the scoreboard.
4. UCF (1-0, LW: #2)
This is really only because they have only played one game. The Knights resume action this week against Maryland.
5. SMU (2-1, LW: #5)
The Mustangs were matching scores with TCU until the offense slowed down, and the defense couldn’t make a stop. You literally could see their will break towards the end of the game, and you knew it was over at that point. Like we pointed out, Courtland Sutton was a focus for the Horned Frogs defensively, and they held him to one catch the whole game. For zero yards. If you told anyone that before the game, you would have expected a monstrous blowout for TCU, but the Mustangs rallied. There’s plenty to be excited about going forward for this team.
6. Navy (2-0, LW: #6)
The Midshipmen were off this week, and are already facing their second conference opponent in Cincinnati. This will be an interesting test for both teams, and could tell us a lot about each team’s trajectory.
7. Tulsa (1-2, LW: #7)
Is your offense hurting for points? Can’t seem to move the ball? Play Tulsa, and all those worries will be erased. The Golden Hurricane surrendered 679 yards, and blew a 28-7 lead early on to lose to Toledo. The offense, while fairly one dimensional still, is still a positive, but what happens when they can’t score?
8. Cincinnati (2-1, LW: #8)
Debated putting Tulsa here and moving the Bearcats up, but Cincinnati looked rough for three quarters. A comeback in the fourth quarter gave them the win over Miami-Ohio, and leaves them at 2-1 for the season. Next up: Navy. Luke Fickell’s team is getting a tough test, but not one that is impossible to win.
9. Temple (2-1, LW: #9)
Temple could be on their way down, but at least they have a winning record. Quarterback Logan Marchi still has yet to turn the ball over as well, which has been a nice surprise for the offense. USF awaits next week, and it’s a game on the road. Things could get ugly.
10. Tulane (1-2, LW: #10)
Tulane had two leads in this game, and was only down 14 at halftime. That’s a win by itself. The final score got away from them, but the Green Wave put up a good fight in the first half. Things are looking promising for Willie Fritz’s team so far, but another tough test awaits in Army this week.
11. UConn (1-1, LW: #11)
Well, the offense showed some life finally. Unfortunately, the defense had it’s worst game this season. Maybe ever. 626 yards later and the Huskies found themselves in the losing column by a score of 38-18. At least the offense finally woke up under offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee. We hope that’s a sign of things to come.
12. East Carolina (0-3, LW: #12)
No joke, East Carolina was winning this game 17-7 after the first quarter, and was only down by six at halftime. 34 third quarter and 57 unanswered points later, and Virginia Tech wound up with a 64-17 win.
