Junior G Curran Scott

Admittedly, I fell too hard for Curran Scott last year. In a strong freshman year at Charlotte, it looked like he had answered all the questions that kept him from being recruited by high majors hitting 44% of his 3-point attempts and finishing through contact pairing an elite foul rate with an 83% FT percentage. Thrust into the starting lineup for the first 8 games, he didn't shoot quite as well as expected from deep (33%) and he looked overwhelmed defensively by stronger, faster guards.

I'm not sure his early season performance warranted a lineup change, but the team was 4-4 and Haith replaced Scott with Corey Henderson where they immediately picked up their biggest win of the season against KState. That left Scott buried on the bench, where he averaged just 10mpg from then until mid-February and didn't help his case shooting just 29% when he did play.

A 6-game flourish to end the season was enough to bring his stats up to a reasonable level and give hope for a 2019 breakout. With Henderson and Wheeler gone, the guard spots next to Taplin are once again wide open and with another year's experience under his belt, I'm willing to buy into Curran Scott once again as the answer.

2018 stats: 14.9mpg, 5.9ppg, 2.1rpg, 0.7apg, 0.3spg, 1.1topg, 0.0bpg, 42.7% 2PT, 35.3% 3PT, 84.1% FT
2019 proj.: 20.4mpg, 9.7ppg, 2.5rpg, 1.0apg, 0.5spg, 1.2topg, 0.0bpg, 46.7% 2PT, 38.6% 3PT, 76.2% FT

Scott does a lot of things well. He surprised me with his ability to get to the rim last year. He is what I like to call, sneaky smooth. He needs to be consistent and he needs to develop on the defensive end.

I don’t think Scott is an elite shooter but the play you have embedded in your post illustrates what he can do to get those numbers up. He’s a hustle player and quicker to the basket than you would think.

But he's a good enough shooter than you have to play honest perimeter defense on him which creates some holes for him to dribble drive. He's also a very good passer. He can be a problem for man to man and zone defenses because of these abilities and because nothing pops out on tape about him, teams don't necessarily plan on how to defend him or where to bring help on him.

:rolleyes:Yes....He seems to have a gift of figuring out how to score around the
basket....You old timers might remember another 6'3"ish player that
could do many of the same things...Bill Kusleika...He would often score
under the bucket flatfooted while amongst much taller players....

Scott is fun to watch...The closest skill set to him among our new players
is likely Zeke Moore, who is probably 3 or 4 inches taller.....

Wasn’t he banged up early last year?

He’s a really nice player. Reminds me of some of our guys from bygone days. Very sneaky and knows how to play, isn’t afraid of anyone, and has a killer instinct. I think he was passed over because of speed and lack of “athleticism,”but with him it doesn’t really matter. He can flat out play.
