📝 Larry Lewis Switch to defense paying off for Tulsa's Malachai Jones

It was a huge risk for an established receiver like Malachai Jones to voluntarily want to make a sudden switch to safety on defense for Tulsa. But for Jones, it was no risk, no gain.

🏈 News/Notes Remembering former Tulsa coach Steve Kragthorpe

I just wanted to share some thoughts on Coach Kragthorpe. As most know by now, he passed on Sunday after a long battle with Parkinson's.

I remember when he was hired in December of 2002 to be TU's next head coach. He was a 37-year old assistant coach for the Buffalo Bills. Online media was a new thing back then, and I had been covering TU for about a year. I never got to know Keith Burns, so Steve was really the first head coach I covered in-depth. I was immediately struck by Steve's attention to detail, and most of all, his passion for the game.

At a weekly press conference, and @CaneVideo probably remembers this, I asked a question about Nick Bunting's post-game comments after a previous win -- in which he stated TU owed SMU for a beating the year before. Steve was already irritated (which I didn't know) about former TV reporter Kenny Choi cutting up clips to make it seem Steve was talking about a different topic than what he was asked about. So, Steve kind of jumped down my throat after my question. But about an hour later, he called to apologize and explained what was going on. That instantly boosted my respect for him. He was always welcoming and gave me full access to practices, camps, etc. The entire staff was great to us. He would always meet with me for about an hour prior to fall camp, to chat about the team and expectations. We'd sit out on the couch in the entry to the coaches' office.

Steve was also great during the off-season, allowing me and @Bill Lowery to be right in the middle of prospect camps, and he'd introduce us to high school coaches in attendance, like Joey McGuire (now the Tx Tech coach). He'd have a preseason golf tournament -- seems like it was always at Battle Creek. One year, I was paired with Steve Gage and Steve August, which was a great time. There was a different coach at each hole, which would complete your foursome. Steve was always on the Par 3 that goes over water...hole 11, I think.

One other moment that I think about from time to time was the home game against Navy in 2004. TU came out flat and stayed that way in a 29-0 loss, moving to 0-3. A bit of a hangover after losing to OSU the week before. The media waited for Steve to come out for the postgame press conference, and it took way longer than usual, but we could hear Steve in the locker room, and he was FIRED UP. You could clearly hear what he was saying, and he was not happy. It just showed the passion that he had, and the desire to be great. That was his only losing season at TU.

Steve got the program back on track with three winning seasons and three bowl games in four years. I think I only got to chat with him one time after he left TU in January of 2007. I give him all the credit for helping me establish Inside Tulsa Sports by giving us access in an era where online media was not given much respect.

Former TU President Bob Lawless passed away on Saturday

Media release...

Former University of Tulsa President Robert W. Lawless passed away Saturday, Aug. 10, leaving behind an extraordinary legacy of progress for the physical campus as well as the university’s academic and athletic reputation. He was 87.

Lawless led the university from May 1, 1996, to June 1, 2004.

“President Emeritus Lawless left an indelible mark on our university and our city. Our hearts go out to his wife, Marcy, his entire family, and those whose lives he touched,” said President Brad Carson. “Bob Lawless’ unprecedented accomplishments set the bar for every successive UTulsa president for the past two decades. I am honored to one day be remembered in the same company as such a strong and effective leader.”

Lawless expanded the footprint west of Delaware Avenue, transforming UTulsa into a more traditional campus with a defined perimeter. State-of-the-art facilities were constructed, including:

Donald W. Reynolds Center
Mabee Legal Information Center and Boesche Legal Clinic
Donna J. Hardesty Sports Complex
Michael D. Case Tennis Center
Fulton and Susie Collins Fitness Center
Hurricane soccer/track complex and intramural field
216 University Square apartment units

Additionally, the university raised its academic profile under Lawless’ administration, improving in key rankings and adding to the number of nationally competitive scholars, such as Goldwater, Truman, Marshall, Udall, National Science Foundation, and Department of Defense. The trend continues to this day.

Before arriving in Tulsa, Lawless served as president of Texas Tech University and was a faculty member at Texas A&M University and the University of Houston. He had also served as executive vice president and chief operating officer of Southwest Airlines.

📝 Larry Lewis A stronger, quicker Marks leads the Tulsa offensive line

When Tulsa's coaching change came before last season, TU was fortunate that Tai Marks was among those that were in the "buy in" category. As one of the 16 remaining scholarship players from when Kevin Wilson took over as head coach at TU before last season, Marks has become a team leader, and is the anchor of a young offensive line for the Golden Hurricane.

Elon / Trump highlights

It’s funny. I started to listen to Trump & Elon last night & it was delayed for over an hour. They claimed DDoS attack, whatever, we know who it was. Because if it wasn’t one of Kamala & A Blinkin’s ppl, it was one of their ppl. Meaning some flaming idiot that votes for them. Conservatives would never do this if Kamala ever were to have an interview on a tv network prime time slot or on social media, we would never bitch and complain about how it’s “misinformation” & demand that the government do something to combat whatever the fucc Kamala would say in an interview if she ever gave one.

2 takeaways.

Trump revealed that upon entering the White House some generals handed him a document to sign & upon learning it was to pay Boeing for Air Force One (both of them) & was agreed upon by Obama, he looked at it & say $5.7billion & said “no. I’m not signing it. It’s a bad deal.” 4 weeks later they came back with the # at $4.1billion. He probably could’ve saved us another 2-3 billion. This is what happens when you have idiots with no financial nor fiscal demeanor in the executive branch, they spend like crazy bc “screw the taxpayer, they work for us!” is their attitude. They’re also illiterate at math.

Elon got Trump to speaking about the assassination attempt pretty early. This was the best part of the whole thing. Trump described how when he turned his head, he was looking right at the shooter, that is he lined his eye up square with the barrel, which the doctors tell him is why his slight turn of the head allowed him to survive. Trump called it an “Act of God.” He called it a “miracle.” He said, “if you don’t believe in God, you should probably start thinking about that.” He said he was a believer before but now he’s really a believer. He said, of the miracle, the act of God that saved his life, “I’m honored by it.”

These are the words of a humbled man, yet I can’t lie, I’m looking forward to the headlines from camp Kamala outraged that he said these things.

The president telling people that they should consider believing in God if they don’t isn’t just a good thing, it’s a GREAT THING! Yet, this is something that Democrat politicians will never do. They will never speak about their devotion to Christ nor their belief in God. They’ll say they’re Catholic or whatever, sure. But they won’t say the word “God,” nor “our Lord & Savior Jesus Christ.”

All this faux virtue signaling yall have been up to is unfortunately about to serve yall nothing, those of you who voted Dem. I don’t get it, by the way, why can’t a Democrat politician utter the word “God” or “our Lord & Savior Jesus Christ?” That’s rhetorical… I know why. It’s because they sold their souls a long time ago.

Pray 4 Peace & God Bless

Olympics

Figure we can discuss the Olympics here. US' first soccer match vs France today. In what I view as a shocking lineup development, Slonina is not starting in goal for the US. US will be the underdog today but should advance to knockout stages as they're in a pretty weak group other than France.

The very first analyst in the history of NCAA

Dave Kragthorpe…..An old school coach who scripted every aspect of Steve Kragthorpe’s teams.

Google Dave Kragthorpe, Steve’s dad, and you’ll deeply understand the DNA of Steve.

Dave, was the unofficial “one of many” analysts in D-1 football.

One of our frequent posters think that “analysts” are “parasites”.

I beg to differ.
