Games of Interest (12.7.22 - 12.9.22) Detroit Mercy

Its Game Day!!!!

Today we take on a former Missouri Valley Conference team in Detroit Mercy. They record doesn’t look very good but I have watched them play and they are pretty good. We will need to be on our game to win this.

Not very much in the other games for the schedule.

And One

The new Head Football Coach is to be introduced to Tulsa today during this game. I hope all are out at the game to show spirit and welcome the new coach.

GO TU!!!!

📝 Larry Lewis Recap: TU suffers home loss to Detroit Mercy

Facing one of the top scorers in college history, like TU was doing against Antoine Davis, can be too much for a young team. However, it wasn't so much Davis who beat Tulsa as it was Tulsa's inability to grab defensive rebounds in the second half that doomed the Golden Hurricane. Tulsa gave up a whopping 18 offensive rebounds, including 12 in the second half, as Detroit Mercy outlasted Tulsa 76-72 Wednesday night in front of 3,012 fans at the Reynolds Center.

📝 Larry Lewis Wilson introduced as next TU football coach

New Tulsa coach Kevin Wilson's first impression at his press conference should go a long way to squelch concerns the doubters may have.

Wilson was in command, showing intelligence, wit, a strong belief in his ability to coach, and even got emotional when talking about his past players. It was a strong introduction to the media and to TU boosters Tuesday afternoon at H.A. Chapman Stadium.

TU Coaching Search Update

The "Candidates" thread has a lot of names and speculation, so I just wanted to post an individual update on the info I've received from sources close to the program.

Matt Wells, GJ Kinne and Mickey Joseph have all had contact with TU officials in some form or fashion and have shown interest in the opening. Those are the main three names I've consistently heard from all sources. There are a few fringe names that have come up -- such as Justin Fuente, Eric Morris and Barry Odom -- that are plausible, but I do not have enough info to confirm that they have had contact or have shown interest.

-----------------------------

Mickey Joseph, former Nebraska interim head coach: went 3-6 this season as interim coach after Frost was fired. The 54-year old is known as a great recruiter and showed strong leadership at Nebraska. I believe he has some ties with Rick Dickson. Was head coach at Langston for two seasons and also coached at Central Oklahoma. Was an assistant at LSU for five years prior to Nebraska.

Matt Wells, former Tulsa TE coach, former Utah St. and Texas Tech HC: was a Tulsa assistant from 2002 to 2006, and he spent this season as an analyst at Oklahoma. Wells has a 57-51 record as a coach. Had two 10-win seasons at Utah State. The 49-year old slowly improved at Texas Tech from 4-8 to 4-6 to 5-3, but he was fired before the end of his third season. He knows what TU is all about and has strong relationships with many folks in and around the program.

GJ Kinne, former Tulsa QB, current Incarnate Word HC: 33-year-old Texas native and 2010 C-USA Offensive Player of the Year has led FCS Incarnate Word to a 10-1 record and a Southland Conference championship in his first season. Had a 55-41 victory over FBS opponent Nevada. The Cardinals are currently ranked No. 5 and play No. 11 Furman in the FCS playoffs on Dec. 3. Knows the TU program well after starting at QB from 2009 to 2011.

TU Volleyball

Appears that TU has moved on from Ryan Wills as the volleyball head coach. Ryan and his wife. Evyn (nee Bandy) were students of mine in Twin back when Evyn played volleyball for TU. They're good folks but I always questioned whether Ryan was right for the head job as a coach. TU is obviously serious about all of it's programs being quality programs and being postseason participants. Being a good person and graduating kids is no longer the standard for being (and remaining) a coach at TU. And it's not like TU is just moving on after 2-3 years from these coaches. Ryan had been at TU for 9 years and really hasn't sniffed the postseason. I wonder if Ed would come back? What does this mean for Chrissy Strimple in softball because TU softball should be an NCAA participant EVERY YEAR. Would Bargfeldt come back as the head guy with the renewed commitment to programs and facilities and atmosphere that TU has been creating the last 2 years?

Coach Wilson

I thought we would go with a lower division head coach to replace monty. Putting my biases aside if the other names which people championed had never been mentioned would you be pleased with an OC from a high scoring consistent championship contender? I would. Yes he had a less than successful few years as a HC but it was sandwiched between two really good runs as an OC. Sometimes people learn from failure and are better prepared for the next opportunity and let’s hope that coach Wilson will fit that pattern. I understand this hire and trust the leadership of Carson and Dickson.

Games of Interest (12.6.22)

Gameday is tomorrow. Today we introduced the new Head Football coach and it got emotional. You can watch it on the Tulsa website and ESPN+.

On to basketball. Tulsa Men play tomorrow. We do have some good games for you this evening.

Sam Houston State is at Oklahoma State. Sam Houston State has a 7 NET. Yes I said a 7. They have only lost one game and that was at Nevada by 18. They edged Oklahoma 52-51 at the beginning of the season and then have been obliterating some of these NAIA and D2 or 3 schools. They also beat Utah by 10 on the road. This should be a good matchup today.

Loyola Chicago is feeling that A10 feeling as they are taking on another bottom feeder in Green Bay.

Bryant and Tulane has been postponed due to health and safety protocol with the Bryant Bulldogs.

And One

Morocco did what was impossible by not only beating Spain in the Round of 16 but finally won a game that went to Penalty Kicks. Christiano Ronaldo who has signed with a Saudi Club, apparently got into a grudge with the Portugal Coach and was benched until the 72nd minute. They didn't need him winning 6-1.

GO TU!!!!

2023 Roster

It will be interesting to see how the roster looks next year, see who transfers in/out, see if the new staff can keep the committed guys and see who they can bring on board. Now some of the guys that will graduate and move on are important pieces to the current team, but numbers wise we really don't have that many guys out of eligibility.

Presser Highlights

Overall a good press conference - little awkward at the beginning, but when we got down to the meat and potatoes, it’s what we needed to hear.

1. His comments about evaluating talent were on point. You have to be able to find those kids and not rely on 4-5 star recruits. Development is key and he honed in on that big time.

2. While he didn’t give a straight answer about an oc, I appreciated his response because it sounded like he would do what’s best for the team based on the situation… not stick to one way of doing things just because that’s how he’s always done it.

3. Also mentioned a designated special teams coach (Lower offensive or defensive level coach). This is huge considering how terrible we’ve been in that aspect of the game.

4. He knows this area. He made that clear. That will be big for us when it comes to local/regional recruiting.

5. His experience is EXTENSIVE. I was impressed when he talked it all out - that will bring a perspective we haven’t had in a LONG time (decades?).

6. He seems like the tough but fair coach. In my pinion those are the best kind. Will stick up for his kids but he’s going to make them earn their time. Classic good football coach.

If I left anything out feel free to add.

I’m excited!
