Bill Self on NIL—Top Player

IMO, NIL is absolutely killing college sports and teams like Tulsa don’t stand a chance to compete against big money schools.

Kansas head coach Bill Self has a straightforward reason for passing up on AJ Dybantsa

On SI’s Eli Henderson relayed Bill Self’s reasoning for passing up on the next big thing wing, AJ Dybantsa: Kansas needs to spread the NIL wealth around the entire lineup. One-man shows don’t tend to win titles at the collegiate level.
“Traditional Powerhouses like the Kansas Jayhawks, which initially pursued Dybantsa, appear to be opting out of this bidding war, instead focusing on other top players with a lower NIL price tag,” Henderson prefaced before saying, “This isn’t about Kansas being cheap; it’s about long-term strategy. With the average NIL compensation for top-tier players in the transfer portal estimated at around $750,000, allocating $4 million to one high school recruit could have major repercussions on a program’s ability to build a complete, competitive roster.”

Dybantsa told Paul George and the “Podcast P” panel that he was looking for a family-oriented approach that will fast-track him to the NBA.
“Everybody’s gonna think you should have the four or five blue-bloods in there, but I mean me and my family have pillars,” Dybantsa said. “We need a family-oriented school, I need a coach that’s not gonna sugarcoat, I need the best and fastest development plan — I’m trying to be a one-and-done, I need a winning organization and I just picked the best seven schools that I think fit that … I’m just trying to choose the school that’s best for me.”

AJ Dybantsa on why he reclassified from 2026 to 2025 recruiting class

Dybantsa explained how his frame filling out was the only thing that kept him from reclassifying from 2026 to the Class of 2025 during that interview with George – a player he is hoping to emulate from an earnings standpoint but is hoping to have a shorter college career than.
“This is my original class, I just wasn’t ready to play with these guys yet, and then once I grew into my body and once I got a strength coach, I was like ‘I’m ready to go back up,'” Dybantsa said.
Dybantsa has no crystal ball predictions yet. Where he’s looking to attend for a one-year transformation into an NBA-ready prospect is unclear.

Here’s the box score from the game. By the way, Missouri State beat SW Baptist 72-67 after leading by 2 at the half. Missouri S&T is predicted to finish 10th in their conference and SW Baptist 15th. Drenin Dinkins, a 6-0 junior,” for SW Baptist, led all scorers with 22 pts. I mention this because I coached his father Dusty Dunkin, when I was an assistant at SW Baptist. I was proud of Dusty and likewise, his son.

Anyone who was at the game have any insight into Archie's defense tonight?

I know he fouled out early in the OT and had 4 fouls for a good bit of the second half which limited his playtime a bit. I hadn't felt like he was a defensive liability last year. Hoping that's not the case this year.
Odom and Nash are better defenders. I like seeing Odom and Archie on the court together some.

Went into this game holding my breath. Hadn’t heard a ton about this team other than they had “good chemistry”. I told my brother I was excited for the upcoming basketball season as we should have better shooting after listening to konkol on the hurricast. My brother told me he was told “don’t expect much” from TU bball this year. He knows someone very closely connected to the team. That was the first non sunshine pumping quote I had heard so didn’t pay much attention to it much. After this game I’m still holding my breath. Still only an exhibition game, but definitely not a team that should take you to OT. Garcia will help when back but it’s not like he was a defensive wrecker on that end last year.

Take aways from the game...

-- Garcia did not suit-up, so the defense covered Reed and Smikle with 1 defender and their 2 bigs were both better.
--There was no going into the center and a kick out for easy baskets
--Physically Reed looks better, but athletically not the improvement one should see after a first season
--Smikle often out of rebounding position and has weak hands
-- Barnes was so-so, I expected better
-- Willis was rusty after a year lay-off due to injury
--Archie had some great moments, but made to many mistakes with the ball
-- Carrington played well on both ends of the court
-- McWright will see time off the bench, unless he shows more than he showed tonight
.. Odem seemed to be the brightest spot on the court tonight and should become more consistent with playing time.

TU played to lose that game and should have lost to the Miners.
We got lucky with the Archie shot at the buzzer and then again in overtime.

I admit that I fall into a funk quicker than many others on this board, and it's unfortunate that it went wonky this early in basketball. I really hope that Konkol can turn it around.

A ray of sunlight might be getting Garcia back. He could really change the dynamics of the team and help spacing / defense. The sooner that happens the better.
I melt too, but crap , Tulsa has sucked for so long , that I almost expect to be disappointed , Brad Carson said he expects excellence, still waiting to see it , all I hear from TU is talk, but have seen nothing positive

Missouri S&T Exhibition

You know , the more TU plays like they have been playing in both sports , the more I think you have been right a lot more then people here think you have been 😂 geez we suck so hard at athletics right now

Tulsastats.com was up during the game but is offline at the moment for some reason. Odom was lead scorer I believe. The shooting by both teams was bad. We weren't shooting free throws very well until late.

Too many turnovers by our upperclassmen and we tied them in rebounds.

Anyone have a box score??

Too many turnovers by our upperclassmen and we tied them in rebounds which is why I've been saying we should be wary of the frontcourt skill / depth early in the season when we apparently won't have Amadi / Garcia.

It counted in our win loss record…tonight doesn’t. The two games are not the same
What an idiot. Exhibition games are exhibition games. Mediocre D2 teams are mediocre D2 teams.

We've lost to lower tiered teams twice in something like 70+ exhibition games. Konkol almost did it again tonight and got saved by Archie. This would have been like the Globetrotters losing to the Washington Generals. It doesn't matter if it's a game played in a snowstorm on an aircraft carrier. That just shouldn't happen, and any "fan" who says they are okay with it isn't a real fan.
