The identification of new mutations of Covid19, the latest from S. Africa, point out why worldwide vaccinations are important to eventual control. The more times a virus replicates, the more chances there are for a mutation. While the current vaccine may be less effective against the latest mutation (less but still valuable TBD), using the current vaccines to reduce the total pool of replicating virus will reduce the opportunities for new mutations. Until then, it sounds as if we could be in for repeated Covid shots.

Dr. Fauci says new data shows Covid vaccines appear to be less effective against some new strains
Even if the vaccines are less effective against new variants, they'll still likely provide enough protection to make them worth getting, Dr. Anthony Fauci said.
