This is the Republican Party

Bonehead Trump wants to privatize Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. That's a dumb move that could cause massive upheaval in the mortgage market. Is this another one of his supposed 'cost saving' ideas?
Private equity and Wall Street want in on the action. It is really what it boils down to. There will be virtual implicit guarantees that they will get bailed out if they go belly up. It doesn't matter how screwed up their books or risk-taking are. They won't go to jail—just cash checks and pay a small fine.

Borrowing costs will undoubtedly go up because the government probably underwrites things that wouldn't be possible without higher rates in the private markets

So how many cabinet choices has Trump nominated, who have criminal and reputation problems? Since 2016 Trump has nominated somewhere around 100 people who withdrew. That's gotta be a record for a president about to start out his second term.

I would be willing to bet he’s fired more senior officials that were his own noms than any other president. Some people think that’s a good thing, but I think it’s a sign of being a terrible judge of talent.

I think he is attracted to bravado, and quite often, bravado doesn’t actually accomplish much.

The opportunity to raise rates on a captive target market with an implicit government guarantee: the results will eventually be another S&L Crisis replay with the tax payers bailing out the culprits and no one goes to jail. Cue up quotes from Willy Sutton, H.L. Mencken, and P.T Barnum.

Trump seems to be easing up on Ukraine, after the fall of Assad. He is telling Putin he needs to act on getting peace initiative going, rather than blaming it all on Ukraine and insisting the Ukranians need to make sacrifices for peace. He also is saying we will reduce military financial help to Ukraine. Before he spoke about eliminating it. Seems like he realizes we have the advantage after Assad's fall.

My guess is Trump senses weakness in Putin’s current position. I would expect him to use that in a negotiated peace. Wouldn’t be surprised to see him hint at a much greater US involvement should Russia not accept certain terms. We will see.

Plus Biden is giving them 1B before leaving office, that Trump knows will tide them over along with Trumps 'reduced aid'. He doesn't have to claim Biden's package, but it all makes Putin suffer during peace negotiations.

I know it’s only 10 or so out of nearly 6000 colleges but has Trump stated he will deport students who are here on valid student visas or is this Axios trying to manufacture what is currently a non-story?

Trump just never lets something go. Network settles lawsuit with Trump for $15M likely because they didn't want to be in a lawsuit with Trump while he was a sitting President in a controversial lawsuit which they could have won or lost. It was a tossup 60/40 in favor of Trump & they would have looked bad in the case.

Stephanopoulos said something that was not factually proven in a court. There are ways around that seeing as how it was a lawsuit that was on the basis Stephanopoulos said it with malice. That's the problem with the case is having to prove malice. They just didn't want the hassle of the case because it wouldn't look good and they could have lost.

Now Trump wants to file several more lawsuits because his grifter nature can't walk away from money and winning. I guarantee the next suit won't even be as justified as this one appears to be. I also guarantee you the defendant network will take it to summary judgement, and likely trial. He will lose at least half the money they settled for if he goes forward with just a few trials. Likely more.

What a moron. What's new. He has said way worse about other people. I wish they would take him to court, because he has unjustly slandered many people. Take him for all he's worth. He has even caused threats on people's lives with the slander he makes.

Just saw that Elon wants to flood the US market with educated labor via doubling the H1B.

On the one hand, I appreciate gaining a tighter grip on global knowledge base…. On the other…. This really doesn’t put America first.

If we’re going to set yearly immigration limits similar to Canada then I assume this is a way to assure we see a balanced educational mix of those coming to the US. Whether such a mix is a desirable outcome is the question.

All that said, my hope would be that US citizens get priority in the hiring process for these type of jobs.

Canada is up in arms over their immigration policies right now. They’re probably not a good model.

As I said previously, we have some of the best higher education on the globe…. We really don’t need to be importing this sort of skilled labor so they can eventually take the knowledge back to their own countries. We have plenty of people here to fill those roles, and if we’re having trouble filling them then the solution is to make education more available.

Maybe we should model ourselves more off of Japan, if we really want to isolate our domestic economy.

Wouldn’t limiting the number of international students better solve your issue? Something I’ve never seen you advocate btw. Workers at least are helping our companies innovate and produce technology related products which benefits the US and its citizens. International students add little to the US economy other than pay tuition to a university. While taking what they learn back to their own countries.

I’m all for limiting the number of international students. I think we have sold China much of our technological advantage in terms of education. I would support not doing that, but we would have to rethink the higher ed funding model.

Let me just say, that I have directed many people who have or have tried to get H1B status.... and there are a select few out of many handfuls whom I think actually merit such status. In most cases, our onshore / native teams can get things done in 1/4 the time, and we have a better end product in the long run because we've retained the knowledge of how things were built. The only tradeoff is expense. Offshore resources will take 4 times as long and provide a subpar product but might be 15% cheaper at the end of the day.

my company went to off-shore tech support. it was painful to get started and it didn't work as advertised.

What the heck does offshore tech support have to do with H1B visas to foreign workers? If the foreign workers are integrated into an American firm, that has nothing to do with hiring the foreign tech support. That's comparing American apples to Indian grapefruit.

I think he was riffing on my comment about offshore developers. I will say that the jobs currently given to many H1B’s, at least in the technology and engineering side of things (I couldn’t say in other industries like medicine or finance), are not so cream of the crop that Americans couldn’t do them. Companies just want to depress their wage rates and deliver projects for cheap. These jobs tend to be somewhat entry or early career level.

Previous advances in US technology have relied on imported talent, which may surprise some of the MAGA Reps in the House. The development of the atomic bomb was the result of a small number of Hungarians, Dutch and German scientists fleeing to safe havens in the US and UK. The foundation of our space program was laid by German scientists and engineers brought over after WW2. Look at the names of those leading our big tech companies, and Indian and Chinese names appear in numbers far out of proportion with their population in the US.

Those are not the people we are tending to talk about with H1B
