This is the Republican Party

And yet.... the Mexican President says he's bsing
Of course she is. Politicians (both of them) playing the game and not wanting to appear weak in front of their country. You miss the part where I predicted this yesterday:

“ Posturing for the rubes. Mexico will talk tough and give the appearance of strength before bending the knee. This is all a negotiation Nothing more nothing less”

I was 100% correct.

Border encounters will be less than half this coming year than 2024. Thanks to be Mexico and the US.

Those crippling tariffs you’ve been screaming about….like I also predicted….not going to happen. For a leader whose so “predictable”, he’s done a marvelous job fooling you

He hasn’t fooled anyone. He hasn’t accomplished anything. You’re giving him Kudos for twitter messages.

He made similar twitter messages in 2016 referencing his discussions with the then Mexican leader…. Who he said agreed to pay for a certain wall… right up until that Mexican leader told him to go jump off a cliff, that under no circumstance would Mexico pay for that project…. And they didn’t.

Are you the kind of person that goes to the mechanic to get their blinker fluid replaced?

I can never get my blinker fluid right.

Still doubting me and predicting a tariff war between the US and Mexico I see. This is proceeding exactly as I predicted. You tariff alarmist can relax Mexico will secure its southern border The huge migrant caravans crossing Mexico to the US will stop The number of migrants coming through Mexico reaching the US border will be dramatically reduced The US, Mexico and Canada will reach an agreement designed at dealing to the fentanyl crisis Mexico will continue to publicly release mixed messages in the meantime to appease the drug cartels This is indeed predicable The price of tomatoes is safe I’m having a hard time believing posters still can’t see the outcome here and continue to panic about our soon to be wrecked economy due to a trade war with Mexico and Canada

Now China is a wildcard No clue what will happen there Pretty sure we don’t import tomatoes from China though

The caravans will be stopped, but the proceeding caravans will fracture into a million separate groups. The migrant problem may slow down, but in no way will it be drastically reduced imo.

But this does nothing to reduce the fentanyl, nor will anything Mexico can do, or is willing to do. The money running behind it is too great to stop the corruption and trail of deaths that will happen if they do anything to impede it. Canada might do something to impede the quantity of fentanyl (in significant amounts) coming across their border, but I seriously doubt that the main problem is the Canadian border. And even Canada will not come close to stopping the majority of the flow. Most of the supply that slows down thru Canada will likely be rerouted thru Mexico. My bet is that around 5-7% less will be coming across our border if they are lucky. That is a drop in the bucket. It won't come close to stopping the fentanyl problem.

This is just lip service to appease Trump, nothing else.

I’ll stand by my prediction of border crossings dropping by more than half in 2025 from where they were in 2023 and 2024. We can revisit in 6 months to see whose prediction was closer to the actual number

He will achieve a significant accomplishment in slowing Mexican and Latin American immigrants, that's not a drastic reduction. Significant reduction 20-50%,(In the words of Radar,(f/ Mash) 50% is highly significant) drastic reduction 60-80%. Defining my parameters here.

His achievements in slowing fentanyl will be negligible. Slowing it down 5-8% isn't a significant accomplishment in my books.

This is kind of disingenuous as they were already dropping before these conversations ever started.

Quick question which one of Canada's borders do they have to close to get into the good graces of Trump? LMAO.

Are we trying to stop the Caravans of polar bears fleeing global warming?

P.S. if you effectively stop immigration, what are you going to do about the population? We are well below the necessary replacement rate for domestic fertility. Immigration, whether legal or illegal has overall been a boon for the US economy in recent years. Seems to me like we should care slightly less about putting up blockers, and more about catching everyone entering and processing them to weed out those who shouldn't be allowed entry (criminals, etc...)

I’m assuming we want Canada to do more to crack down on the massive amount of fentanyl now being manufactured within its own borders

Unfortunately there’s going to be an overreaction to the cluster we’ve seen on the immigration front over the past 4 years I’m hoping we can begin a reasonable and balanced immigration approached in the next 12-24 months An approach which emphasizes educated and skilled immigrants which is balanced by the arrival of those unskilled and uneducated. I think we should look at yearly quotas similar to Canada’s approach and have “goals” within those quotas regarding educated/skilled versus uneducated/skilled. Hard to argue with such an approach if the health of the US economy is our goal

The problem is, Canadians are currently up in arms about that specific immigration policy. We in the USA don’t have a huge need for more skilled laborers, our populous can and will fill those positions. We have some of the worlds best institutions to train skilled laborers domestically, We need unskilled laborers, as bad as that sounds. And the problem with needing unskilled laborers is that they are often poor and tend to enter communities where poverty related crime thrives.

Even in that article, it is stated that officials are already actively combatting the problem, and that the import of Canadian made fentanyl has paled in comparison to that coming from Mexico.

So we’re threatening to increase our lumber prices for home builders….why????

We absolutely have a huge need for skilled labor We also have a huge need for educated workers

We are speaking two different languages. The article you link is talking about tradesmen, which although certainly a skill, is not the same thing as us importing medical professionals, programmers, engineers, etc… from India which is what “skilled laborers” are referred to in the H1B visas.

Good luck getting a visa as a plummer or an electrician.

Canada has done a poor job in preventing the expansion of fentanyl production within its borders. If we’re going to focus on the fentanyl coming across our southern border then looking at the expansion of the fentanyl production in Canada will also be necessary. I would anticipate Canada-US cooperation in cracking down on the organized crime aspect of fentanyl production in Canada. Seeks like a win win for both governments. Looks like Trudeau met with Trump over the weekend to discuss the topic

Yes….I was referring to those immigrants as “educated”. Which there is in fact a need for in the US

I mean, one of the good things about illegal immigration is that a lot of those sorts of people are coming in, or they soon after enter those trades.

One of the bad things about the legal immigration path is that we give out roughly 2x as many visas for educated labor than we do for tradesmen.

I think if we just vetted the people that came in rather than losing track of them, and instituted federally funded English Language course requirements for adults as part of the visa program more Americans would be happy.

That has almost nothing to do with Canada or Mexico economic policy though.

Honestly, I don’t understand why we don’t promote English as a second language to a greater degree in Mexico and in other parts of the western hemisphere. It has been quite beneficial for us in Europe.

100% I would even take it a step further and advocate and federally funded trade course be made available.

I don't think Steven Miller capable of a measured, reasonable, balanced policy. He will be our policy. All Trumps 'ideas' come out of Millers mouth.

My friend that is an immigrant from Afghanistan was looking for a trade immediately after he came here. He was immediately offered a job by a heating and cooling business, and was doing his best to pick up that trade on the job. Wasn't working that well for him. He then went to doing work as a driver for uber, because they weren't paying him that weil and were taking advantage of him at the Heating & Cooling business.

He looked at Trucking schools, and took a temporary job as a worker for a food service company and a company that put him on jobs that were oriented towards construction. He is obviously struggling to find a way to gain a skill, in a floundering half hazard way. Programs that guide immigrants towards a skill would be strongly appreciated by him, and immigrants like him. We could guide them to the programs where we need the most workers as weil. My thought is the health care industry is in need of workers. That should be an emphasis in those type programs.

Curious how this ended? Did he find a job/career? How is his English? English classes and trade schools should be readily available.

It ended the way I spoke about it at the end. He moved to Dallas, possibly temporarily. He is working for this family that is involved in food service and construction, and is Afghani. He is making more money than when he was driving uber. He is still looking for a trade, but is very busy making money for himself, but more importantly, for his family. If he took time off his work, then he could make more. But he would have to take time off, which he doesn't feel he can do right now. Him getting to that point might not ever happen. A lot of his money is sent to Afghanistan to help his family.

He has a better network of people in Dallas to depend on. There is a group of Afghans in Dallas that have meetings, in which they help you out with your problems. They give you advice, or point you towards someone who is more able to help you. This fairly large group of Afghans is like a second family/community for them to rely upon. It's based on the 'it takes a village' idea. Too bad we don't have that sense of community here. They talk about getting citizenship, jobs, paperwork, school, or whatever is concerning you.

His father is still having to be mobile over being a general in the Afghani army, in order to evade the Taliban. His mother is having semi serious medical issues. So he is more concerned with his family. He got permission to bring his immediate family here recently.(Wife and kids.) As of now, they are not here yet, but it has been a month or so since I talked to him. His English is ok.(He used that ability in the Army, to translate in battlefield situations.) He really should work on his English a bit, but is distracted by his other concerns.

He is constantly having to live his life with a hustle type attitude, hustle a new job, hustle his family from here to there, and be ready to move on a dime. It has not changed yet, that he can feel safe, like he can settle into a routine.

I forgot to include something of great importance for him. He was granted a path to citizenship, (he was only allowed to work as a green card holder before) and has been working on this over the past several months.
