This is the Republican Party

I do think there are real problems, but "AI taking all the jobs" is actually the least of my main concerns.

The biggest threats I see are security based.
One of my sons (PhD in CompSci/AI from CMU) shares your view.

Will Trump's indictment get him elected.? Trump seems to think so; he announced his campaign early to make sure all claims against him were as a candidate and has used each suit or indictment another fund raising opportunity.

Since 2016 for whatever reason (both sides have their claims), fewer people trust our legal system. And as a result fewer people trust our democracy.

In the past the US has faced periods of bitter divisions and polarization, but an underlying commitment to democracy has enabled us to weather most of those disagreements (The Civil War excepted). That underlying commitment and trust in democracy seems at a low ebb again which creates an opening for populists who invariably claim that only he can fix it. The claim that the system is busted and the system for righting it is broken is what opens the door for an individual seeking to operate above the law.

Stay tuned.

too much gov in our lives: mandates, inflation, excessive gov spending and give aways, corrupt fbi and doj, . . . will get the dem Unelected.
But Republicans are never corrupt right? Just look at OK where Stitt and Walters have been caught giving money to their friends for no work or services returned. And I'm all for a more limited gov't but it goes to everything not just to the programs you don't like because they benefit individuals who aren't you. As for inflation, if you think the government really had anything to do with this round of inflation and it wasn't tied to the global pandemic, you really think the US is in a solitary bubble. And you only think the FBI and DOJ are corrupt because they indicted your lord and savior. Where were you howling about corrupt DOJ and FBI in 2016 when they decided to reopen the investigation into Hilary Clinton 2 weeks before the election. You weren't complaining then about how it influenced that election but you're all about the howling now that Jesus Trump is the one going down. You're a ****ing hypocrite

Hillary Clinton lost the election because she didn’t campaign in a state even a high school volunteer could have told you she needed to win.

Also Russia fixed the election.*

It is not just Trump. The fake electors in Michigan are now on deck. Will other states follow?

They didn't create it, but the administration did exacerbate the inflation that was coming down the pike. I'm not sure they wouldn't have created another problem by putting less new money into the economy, but they did likely worsen the levels of inflation.

Link to the bill is in the body of the story. So here is the stupid thing and any of us on here who have gone through the process of getting the Real ID knows it was insane the amount of docs you needed. The bill is extremely short sighted. If I show up to re-register so I can vote in local and state elections (the bill would only restrict voting in those elections as it would be unConstitutional to restrict the right of a citizen to vote in a Federal election), the only form of ID we should need is a Real ID as that contains all the info anyone needs to know. 2nd, a US passport is also sufficient to prove as you must either be a citizen or naturalized citizen to obtain one (there may be an exceedingly rare instance where someone who does not fall into either of those can obtain a US passport). The bill writer/sponsor is banking on POC and those from poor backgrounds won't have an easy access to the information needed. I spent $25 per copy 15 years ago to get original birth certificates with the state seal of The Great State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations on them and it took months to get them back. IDs and docs such as these are expensive to get...wouldn't requiring these in order for someone to vote be the equivalent of a poll tax? Now if OK was going to provide IDs and birth certificates for free, have at it.

My guess is the ACLU files suit 2 minutes after this bill passes and it gets tossed as unConstitutional. Telling a person who has voted in every election the last 10 years they can't do so anymore...bet that doesn't fly.
House Bill 3677, filed by Sean Roberts, R-Hominy, says all voters in the state of Oklahoma must re-register with their local county election board by December 31, 2023.
This bill was introduced in February of 2022 and never progressed beyond introduction.
Status: Introduced on February 7 2022 - 25% progression, died in chamber.

A key witness in Trump’s classified documents case “retracted his prior false testimony” and implicated Trump and others in obstruction of justice after switching lawyers. Yuscil Taveras’ legal expenses were previously paid for by Trump’s Save America PAC. He initially testified to a grand jury that he was unaware of any effort at Mar-a-Lago to delete security footage. After hiring a new lawyer from the federal defender’s office in Washington in early July, Taveras – described as “Trump Employee 4” in court documents – changed his testimony and detailed the alleged effort by Trump, Carlos De Oliveira, and Walt Nauta to tamper with evidence.

I'm sure they already have a few hidden under the belt who have already gone against Trump. Hopefully this latest event will begin a slow turn of the tide, and give others the nerve to follow suit.

So which version of the sworn testimony are we to believe? If the witness lied the first time, why couldn't they be lying now?..

Seriously.. this is becoming a Monty Python sketch... I'm just waiting for someone to fetch the comfy chair.

You believe the second testimony when he is out from under Trumps attorneys, who he realized were protecting Trump, not him.

Or do you belive the second, because thats what you want to hear?.... maybe the first one he was coerced by Trump... and maybe the second was coerced by a suspect justice department.. maybe the truth is something entirely different.. who is to say.. the water is so cloudy right now and everyone is so busy trying to find corruption at the bottom of the pond that they are missing the big turd floating right in front of them...

Regardless of which version is the truth (or closer to it), the testimony from the individual is full of issues as to veracity.

New York Republican Rep. Mike Lawler, who represents a swing district, said he would not “be party to a shutdown.”

“There needs to be a realization that you’re not going to get everything you want,” he said. “Just throwing a temper tantrum and stomping your feet — frankly, not only is it wrong — it’s just pathetic.”

Where was this fiscal sobriety in 2016-2020? Each party only gets tight when the opposing party is in the presidency.

….and some posters only have a problem with borrowing “trillions” from China when their party isn’t sitting in the White House. Go figure

save the budget, cut the congressional staffing by 2/3. let the congressman do their own work.
Having worked on the Hill, the absolute worst idea I've ever heard. The staff are the people that know what they're doing. The place would be a complete disaster, especially without the professional committee staff who are subject-matter experts and lawyers. I couldn't even imagine the epic $hitshow of Congresscritters trying to draft legislation themselves or preparing themselves for hearings. Think of how stupid they are even with the staff, then imagine it without any staff helping them.

The government is incredibly complex. This isn’t 1776 where running the government just means being a statesman. The economy, international relations, the military, domestic programs of all sorts are all infinitely more complex to run than in the past.

Taking away staff from legislators only serves to empower lobbyists, because even the most hardworking and dedicated member of Congress can’t become an expert on more than a fraction of what comes before them. So it is necessary to have experts who can brief them on details.

There’s only so much attention that anyone can give to anything. The more complex a position becomes, the more support staff that is necessary to execute the job effectively. Warren Buffett doesn’t make investment decisions by himself, so why would we want Congress doing that?

He doesn't comprehend the complexities of government. He has no idea that there are many true civil servants who are never elected, but play a big role in how the government doesn't fall apart every day of the year.

other than campaigning and reading prepared words in the halls of congress, what do they do?

My republican moral belief, and most of those I associate with, still believe in the compass of the Party of Lincoln as the Republican Party should be. Not all of us are right wing nuts, nor are all democrats progressives and socialists.

In a perfect world there would be another party and we’d have the party in the middle where most of us reside. I can dream…
Thank you for speaking for we are who are conservative but sane Republicans.

Another example of a "silent majority?" The MAGA group has pretty much taken over as the face of the Republican Party. Agree that what they are offering is not conservatism.

It's this kind of stuff that make the Republican Party look like "right wing nuts". And on 9/11 too.

If the Biden admin refuses to stop the invasion of cartel led human and drug trafficking into our country, states should consider seceding from the union. From Texas to New York City to every town in America, we are drowning from Biden’s traitorous America last border policies.

Welp… you know it must be another election cycle when Republicans start incessantly fear mongering about the southern border.

It reminds me of cicadas in the summertime. The continuous droning that people have to learn to ignore.
