This is the Republican Party

Jan 6 tapes should have been released to all media outlets long ago. Every American deserves the opportunity to see exactly what happened that day in our nations capital.

Most of the new Republican run committees in the House have been embarrassing examples of revenge politics designed to inflame culture war differences. This one however serves as an example of what substantive investigation committees should look like.

"This lone Republican knows how to get stuff done

It doesn’t have to be this way. Ask Mike Gallagher. The Wisconsin Republican has been put in charge of the new House select committee on the Chinese Communist Party — and the chairman so far is turning his panel into everything the covid committee isn’t: bipartisan, serious and productive.
“This is an existential struggle over what life will look like in the 21st century, and the most fundamental freedoms are at stake,” he said in opening the panel’s prime-time hearing Tuesday — the same day the covid committee held its frivolous forum. “Time is not on our side. Just because this Congress is divided, we cannot afford to waste the next two years lingering in legislative limbo or pandering to the press.”
He took no partisan shots, and he screened “a joint video that the ranking member and I put together to help set the stage for the hearing.” That ranking Democrat, Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi (Ill.), reciprocated by acknowledging that “both Democrats and Republicans underestimated the CCP” and praising the bipartisanship and “our unity as Americans.”
The witnesses (including two former Trump advisers) and other lawmakers maintained the feel-good sentiment, what Rep. Darin LaHood (R-Ill.) described as “Republicans and Democrats working together to expose the malign activities of the CCP.”

Although the 'investigative" tone is a bit "guilty until proven innocent," the bipartisan nature is an example that hopefully will be emulated in the future.

It’s really hard to understandand what the Pubs stand for these days. In Florida, Disney is punished for disagreeing publicly with Desantis on a social issue. Many other corporations have taken similar stands in other states without retribution. Now Woke alliegence is more important than support one of the state’s largest employers and a key economic driver?

Also what drives the red state anti-trans movement to criminalize private, personal family decisions?
This policy focus is a top down push; there hasn't been any broad public outcry similar to right to chose or black lives matter. Authoritarians need minority groups to target, and fanning social differences needs boogiemen. So apparently transgender people been selected.? Suddenly it is a big deal across Red states because a small minority group as been identified and demonized. Until Trump did anyone even care?

It used to be that Republicans were the party of big business and small, less intrusive government. Evangelicals were courted for their votes by Rove and then Trump. Now it looks more like it is the other way around. Evangelicals issues drive policies that extend into our bedrooms and family life, and big business/chamber of commerce concerns are now in the backseat being told to keep their mouths shut if they want to keep their economic privileges. Weird.

I have mixed (very mixed) emotions with laws allowing parents to surgically remove the sex organs of young children. WATU…..surely even can you understand the concerns driving these policies? I consider myself about as progressive as anyone when it comes to personal freedoms and the removal of government from the same. However, in these cases where minors are involved permanent decisions made by parents should at least be reviewed imo. Thoughts from the board ?

I can understand the concerns people have, but who do we want to make these decisions? Old white guys prejudiced against the whole concept of trans or the doctors, parents and family? My primary objection is to the characterization of the trans people and accommodations to their unfortunate situation as a threat to society. This whole issue is being excessively publicized and blown out of proportion to create social angst for political purposes. How many people even know a trans person or have their lives affected by one? But boy it's an issue that revs some people up.

I don’t want anyone making the permanent decision to surgically and chemically change the sex of an 8 year old child. Whether it’s old white guys, a doctor, or parents. Now once that child has gone through puberty and matured it should be a different conversation imo.

At a minimum it should not be before he/she is 12 or 13, but probably older.

Picking an extreme case as representative of the 'threat' is exactly the kind of characterization that drives the overblown angst and division in the country. Likely few would disagree with you, but non-representative examples like these obstruct discussion and drive divisions.. How often does your example happen? Compare those numbers with school and other mass shootings which are completely out of control. Revving up a bunch people who likely have never met a trans person as an important issue only serves those who seek to divide the country.

1). Where did I state or even imply that young adults shouldn’t have the freedom to surgically and chemically change alter their sex? The division in this country is rooted in the lack of either political side’s ability to listen to one another. They are so brainwashed as to the righteousness of their beliefs that they often hear what they want to hear. Or in this case read what they want to read. This is a perfect example. A left wing poster believes I have advocated for young adults to be denied the freedom to a sex change.

2). The extreme case is in fact the permanent surgical and chemical alteration of a young child’s sex. I specifically limited my objection to children for this purpose. Adults should not have the authority to permanently alter an 8 year old sex. Let them mature to an age where they can make or meaningfully contribute to maybe the most important decision of their lives. Never dreamed so many people would object to what I see as a reasoned and cautious policy.

For those concerned about harm to children, why not look at the movement to increase kids working at ever younger ages, at their working conditions or reducing the age of consent for teen marriages? Doing so would help more young people and would not target a minority group.

Expanding child labor is exactly what America’s kids don’t need

In a swing state, did Tricia Cotham just prove it is easier to get elected as a moderate democrat and then switch parties than vice versa?

You’re against kids being able to work at 15 years of age? I would have been able to afford very little if I had not been able to work at that age.

my son and grandson started working at 15, picking up carts at the grocery store.

Some of us started working long before 15 with paper routes or mowing lawns.

I’m not sure how anyone can defend the former Republican Party’s change into the Fascist America Party, but there seem to be plenty embracing those views.

I worked in a restaurant at 15. Mowed lawns long before that. Funny….the extreme partisans from each side of the political spectrum believe the other to be the party of Fascism. The echo chamber is very real.

There are elements of fascism in the extreme right side of elected Republicans right now. There are elements of fascists & socialists in the extreme left as well, but mostly in the mode of speech/thought allowed.

I was 14, two months from 15 when I started working 40 hours a week in a restaurant, the summer after my Freshman high school year.
Before then, I was also mowing yards beginning at age 12.
Bought my own car, paid my car insurance. Paid for college myself, along with some college loans I paid off.
Wouldn't change any of it.
I know, cry me a river.

I’m still unsure as to why WATU and his crew are against 15 year olds from less fortunate families working so they might afford some of the things their middle and upper class friends can? I can’t imagine missing out on some of the experiences growing up which working provided me. A car for starters.

As long as they weren't working full time during the school year, I don't see any problem with children working at younger ages.(12 and above)

The Last ~10 posts on this thread are so dumb I’m aghast. No one is saying kids shouldn’t be allowed to mow yards or have paper routes… they’re saying that they want to keep in place guide rails intended on preventing child labor exploration like kids working overnight shifts in slaughterhouses then falling asleep, exhausted, at school.

The law as I read it requires any 15 year old to obtain government approval prior to working as an employee. This would apply to working at a restaurant, the summer at a golf course, even uncle Joe’s yard service. Law seems to be overly broad.

I started working when I was 13-14 for my dad setting up events, mowing, and such at the business where he served as the general manager, and have no problem with kids earning a few extra bucks and the responsibility that goes along with it. However, there are certain jobs kids should not do unless under strict supervision and just about anything in a meat packing house should be out of the question. When I managed a grocery store many years ago, I can assure you we wouldn't have wanted a kid in that age group anywhere near grinders, meat saws, wrapping machines, etc.. Too much dangerous stuff to get cut, pinched, smashed, or burned by, then add the chemicals that are sprayed on the equipment and you have a recipe for disaster.

They should have to receive a permit prior to getting a job for this very reason. There was a reason the law was adopted in the first place. Yes it is onerous on the kids, but it prevents abuse by some malicious business owners / managers…. Especially when they figure our they can exploit the kids for weird hours and less pay.

Work permit from the school counselors office. There are also a limit to the number of hours and period of the day kids can work, though I've forgotten those.

All this rage against child labor typed out on iphones filled with rare earths mined by children in africa .. while wearing clothes made by children.. in China..

I’m still a bit confused as to why 15 year old lawpoke Jr has to get permission from Bixby schools to work this summer at the local snow cone shack.

I’m still a bit confused as to why 15 year old lawpoke Jr has to get permission from Bixby schools to work this summer at the local snow cone shack.
Because he started the job in May while school was in session and then he continued to work there through September while it was sweltering in Oklahoma.

His boss didn't know when school started so he scheduled him to work throughout the week and lawpoke Jr. Liked making money more than he liked math class.… so he decided to skip school so he could buy a guitar.

I can assure you there is absolutely no musically aptitude in lawpoke jr’s family. He actually started after school was out so he had to chase down the superintendent (who was on vacation) to get permission. Apparently lawpoke sr lacks the judgment to determine whether his kid can hold down a summer job slinging cones

It's not because you lack the judgement, it's because many other parents do and some businesses do too.
