...of the Tulane game in the Tulsa World on Friday? It's not like the game itself or all the drama between the players and coaches didn't give them a side story.

Yeah, but that didn't make pooper scooper's story sound as good. He probably did a rough count 10 or 15 min. before tip. He's gotta work that sh*ta$$ storyline. There were more than 1,800 there by the 2nd half. People and students came in a little late. 6pm tips are hard to make on time, especially for out-of-towners like myself.
By the way @Bill Lowery, are you the sneaky one who disguises his name as mr. Bill Mowery in the comments section of the TW?
If so, you should put a little more effort on your stealth work on the internet. ointsId've given you low rankings if Chris hadn't gotten rid of that emoji!) ;0)
My point about the marketing is that the Drillers in the early 80's drew about 500 fans a game, if that. The place was dead. And they turned things around. And lets face it, baseball isn't a fast-paced game. Most people aren't going because of their love for baseball.
That’s an interesting point. The Drillers still don’t draw well every night. But they do pack them in from time to time. I only know a handful of people who actually follow them like you would a real team. The rest of us treat it like it’s an outdoor bar with a low cover charge, hot dogs, and an occasional baseball game that you sometimes follow.
I think TU basketball is an altogether different animal. I have a lot of doubts that “marketing” will make much of a difference. It’s a lot of other generational and cultural factors at issue. I remember a time when nothing was scheduled on campus during basketball. From what I understand, there are MANY events scheduled during our games now. Should we do more things like the Drillers to get people down there? Hell yes. But I think we are talking baseballs and basketballs here.
I just think it's funny that some guy named Bill Mowery comments on TU sports a decent amount. You have a mwinkie. Not me. Don’t you have a subscription to comment? I haven’t subscribed to the TW since the early nineties. And I only subscribed then when I had it mailed to Delaware. I stopped when I moved back to Missouri. I rarely read articles from the online site today. Usually when someone on the boards mentions a story.
Bill Mowery in the TW is hilarious. Who’s next....Mold* ???

Wouldn't it be nice if he called you mellow.I always liked it when Chewbacca from Rice called me “Yellow.” Those were the days. I don’t know if any other programs that talk smack with another school’s beat writer.
Beer, Hot Dogs, Bobble Heads, and Fireworks... Did I mention BeerMy point about the marketing is that the Drillers in the early 80's drew about 500 fans a game, if that. The place was dead. I don’t know that marketing would do much, either. You need people locally who are interested in the home team and college basketball. That doesn’t happen much right now.
I actually thought Hines’ article on Friday was very well done. It even pissed off the Tulane board.
Interesting with huge a TU booster being the half owner of QT. He talked to my TU marketing class when I was in college about the founding of QT.
That's a terrible place to have a giveaway because no one who casual sports fan is going to know to look at XYZ car dealership in town. If you're already a Tulsa fan you might go to the dealership for cheaper seats, but those aren't the people we're trying to attract. We need a place (like QT) where a plethora of non-TU fans go everyday and there are locations spread around town. One car dealership isn't going to cut it.One of the car dealerships was doing a giveaway for a football game this year, although I can't remember if it was a true giveaway or the tickets were reduced to 5 dollars when presented at TU. Probably was to get in for $5.
Does anyone else remember this?
Does anyone know how much tickets can be discounted if they can't be given away?
With the attendance issues affecting most NCAA schools. if it is a rule that you can't give away tickets, that needs to be changed.
Could QT or some other company offer a free ticket with a purchase of something at their store?
Well, we're not asking them to donate. We're asking them to do an advertising giveaway. It wouldn't cost them anything and it might help them sell more taquitos or donuts or whatever. From what I recall, QT wants no part in partnering with TU athletics and made it clear they will not be donating... which is weird since the alumni connection but I guess that’s their prerogative.
As I recall the things that got people into Driller Stadium were fireworks, REO Speedwagon concert, dollar hotdog night. What I think TU needs to do to imitate the Drillers of the 80's and 90's are ticket giveaway nights. We need people in the seats. Have three or four ticket giveaway nights. Have the tickets available at QT.
Also, since parking is a major problem at TU for fans who aren't in the Hurricane Club, some more lots need to be open to the public, even if they aren't close. If you could get some fans into the games, and make sure concession stands and the ticket office have plenty of workers those nights, it could help substantially.
Those giveaway nights for the Drillers got people thinking about the Drillers again. Made it an option. I remember going to some games at the old park where fans were sitting on the field because there such such an overflow. Around 14,000 at a park that seated maybe 10,000 at the time.
Too many people in town never even think of going to at TU game. Basketball or football. That could change. Unless people are lured into the game, they won't care about TU basketball.

If it would bring them more business, I bet they would go for it. We just need to know how to work with them rather than coming with our hands out looking for money. The point was that qt doesn’t seem all that friendly with TU...
