Tulsa Golden Hurricane 2016 College Football Preview
Philip Montgomery and the Tulsa Golden Hurricane look for continued improvement and another Bowl in 2016.
Overview: Montgomery has one year under his belt as head man at Tulsa with a high scoring offense doing most of the heavy lifting which will be the case in 2016 if some answers aren’t found on the defensive side of the football.
Offense: Quarterback Dane Evans threw for over 4,300 yards on 63% with 25 scores so Tulsa has a guy that can be devastating in the air and can use his legs on occasion with 1,000 yard receiver Joshua Atkinson leading the receiving corps while Justin Hobbs and Keevan Lucas combined for 58 catches for 960 yards. D’Angelo Brewer and Ramadi Warren give the Golden Hurricane a solid and productive running tandem with the duo combining for over 1,300 yards in 2015. With Blake Belcher coming back from a knee injury the Golden Hurricane have four starters returning.
Defense: In 2015, the Tulsa defense was a sieve with tons of big plays allowed but there is a lot of experience coming back which in theory is good news. The Golden Hurricane loses two of their top three with DE Jeremy Smith totaling 6.5 TFL while DT Jesse Brubaker posted another 4.5 TFL. Tulsa returns five of their top six at linebacker and has six, three star athletes listed on the roster with the duo of Matt Linscott and Trent Martin combining for over 165 stops and 30 TFL. Jeremy Brady and Jordan Mitchell were the top Tulsa safeties while corner Kerwin Thomas broke up 12 passes with a questionable pass rush having an effect on the secondary as a whole.
Special Teams: The Golden Hurricane get back solid punter Dalton Parks and okay placekicker Redford Jones while Bishop Louie is back at KR with the team needing someone to handle punts (Louie?)
Outlook: There are definitely six wins on the Tulsa schedule but I think there is little room for error so the defense has to have a pulse and not let the offense do all the work.
