Pray for damar hamlin

Just crazy stuff. My senior year of high school we had a kid who collapsed and died on the court due to having an undiagnosed enlarged heart. I immediately flashed back to that, although this thankfully doesn't appear to be the same issue. Hoping for a full recovery.

I think the Bills statement mentioned that he suffered cardiac arrest due to a hit in the game. Doctors on Twitter, many who are ER doctors, speculated commotio cordis, which is cardiac arrest doe to a direct blow to the heart at a very precise moment in the heart's normal rhythm, could be a diagnosis. It's really flukey since the moment in the rhythm that the blow has to occur is about .001 seconds long from what I've read. You see it more commonly in baseball and hockey and at that it's still extraordinarily rare.

I'm praying that this is the case for this young man and the medical attention he received was timely enough to prevent any long term damage to his brain.

Definitely puts things in perspective

I am very unhappy with the unfounded speculation, actually.
I get it...but when it's a medical professional offering a possible cause based on what they saw, it helps inform viewers/readers. I know I was most unsettled not having any info. I chose my words carefully in not saying "Twitter doctors" and using "Doctors on Twitter" to pass on medical professional info vs being Charlie Kirk and instantly blaming the COVID vaccine. Charlie Kirk and his ilk, and Skip Bayless can go straight to hell for all I care. They're awful people only looking to get clicks and have no empathy or compassion for other people at all.

I don't want anyone speculating. The whole thing feels like a huge HIPAA violation, with status and treatment being leaked out. So no, no doctors on Twitter, no talking heads.

I have a feeling that players waive some of that when something like this happens and the a good portion of the free world is watching. And I don't think a lot of it is speculation when the statement comes from the Bills or his agent.

Actually, they don't. The public is not entitled to treatment details. That's why there are medical tents on the sidelines. And the Bills or his agent would have to have signed a HIPAA agreeement. I seriously doubt either did.

NFL Football is an incredibly safe sport, statistically speaking, when it comes to emergency trauma response. Doctors, stretchers, med equipment and Rx to restart the heart, ambulances, helicopters on stand by, playing games only in cities with major trauma hospitals, etc. The story here isn’t that he lived, it’s that he might have died on a 2A high school field in Wyoming.

On the other end of the spectrum, professional soccer players die at an alarming rate, more than 20 in 2021 alone. So many I once had a conversation with a friend about a player who died on the pitch and we talked about the incident for a minute or so before we both realized we were talking about different players who both died on the same day while playing. Heat, exertion, dehydration, lack of medical screening, lack of medical monitoring, lack of trauma response in poor countries, lack of specialized care in socialized medicine countries, these are all ticking time bombs for players with heart issues and even some without them.

This tragic event is another reminder that everyone needs to know CPR. If this young man have a good outcome it will because CPR was started immediately until an AED could arrive to shock his heart back into rhythm.
Per his family he is not yet breathing on his own and is still sedated and prone.

Yikes, not sounding terribly good at the moment. If it takes him that long to recover some of his autonomic functions, it doesn't bode well for him.

Not good. We've discussed previously in the Mike Leach thread about how long your brain can go without any oxygen. While CPR keeps the blood flowing, if there's damage to your lungs and the blood is not receiving oxygen, then your brain is not getting oxygen. While the ATCs and paramedics at the stadium started CPR immediately and perhaps used an AED to jumpstart the heart back into rhythm, there is the chance they were not able to restore lung function and get oxygenated blood to the brain. There were several reports on Monday that he had a pulse when put into the ambulance but he was not breathing on his own. The later report that he needed to be intubated meant oxygen wasn't getting into his lungs and into the blood. I believe yesterday the latest report was that they had reduced the air going into his lungs from 100% oxygen to 50% (per Hamlin's uncle who has been on any and every TV show that has asked for someone). All I know is every day that goes by with him still sedated and on a ventilator is bad for his chances of a full recovery (and I'm not even talking about resuming his career as a player).

As a native of Buffalo & a lifelong Bills fan, this has been a tough couple of days. I can’t imagine how hard it’s been on his family. Bills football is irrelevant to me until there is some resolution. Praying for Damar & his family.

Bills statement today.

“Per the physicians caring for Damar Hamlin at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, Damar has shown remarkable improvement over the past 24 hours. While still critically ill, he has demonstrated that he appears to be neurologically intact. His lungs continue to heal and he is making stead progress.

“We are grateful for the love and support we have received.”

The "neurologically intact" part is encouraging. I feared from previous reports or the crazy uncle report that there may be some brain damage if they were needing to keep him on a ventilator because he wasn't breathing on his own. It does appear from the report that he suffered some damage to the lungs so keeping him sedated and on a ventilator allows that damage to heal some without the labor of someone trying to move or wiggle or whatever. Now my wanna be doctor mind wants to know ow the damage to the lungs occurred. Did it happen when he and Tee Higgins collided on the play? Did the CPR performed break a rib and puncture a lung (not blaming the individuals who performed CPR but this is something that can happen). Will continue including Hamlin in my daily prayer for continued healing and progress to a full recovery.

ESPN's Dan Graziani is reporting that UC doctors were communicating with Hamlin (with Hamlin writing his messages down because he is still intubated) and that Hamlin asked "Who won the game?" That is miraculous. Looking forward to more good news on his recovery as they make it available.
God is good!
Praise the Good Lord !

If you have an opportunity to take CPR, please do. You can save someone’s life.

I need to renew my CPR certification. When I worked at the hospital I used to have to be CPR certified. Its been at least 10-15 years and I know they have changed how to do it.

Biggest difference is there are no more breaths involved in it. Just chest compressions. They say the rhythm should be the song "Staying Alive" by the Bee Gees and it's about 60 compressions per minute. It has been simplified a lot and the key, as it was back then, is hand placement for the compressions.

Many places have included training on an AED device as part of their certifications as well. When I first trained on an AED, the hardest part (and really it's not hard) is placement of the contact pads on the patient. The device tells you whether or not you should shock them.

And if you're local to Tulsa TCC is offering Basic Life Support classes Jan. 30, 31, and Feb. 1. It's a 4 hr course. It's $49.
Right now it's limited to only students in the TCC EMT classes but I'm trying to get some seats for the public knowing their importance and the demand right now is high.

I'm a Pats fan here, but Bills by a million on Sunday LOL
I'm a Pats fan too. They shouldn't have needed to win this game to be in the playoffs. Don't lose to the Bears at home, don't absolutely butcher the last minute defense against the Raiders or the debacle of the last play. Don't butcher your red zone offense against the Bengals and they're in the playoffs easily.
TBH, I'm shocked Rhamondre Stevenson hasn't been cut. The number of costly fumbles he has had in the red zone usually lands you on the first train out of Providence.

Once you get certified, there are several online sites you can recertify with. I’m able to get my biannual professional rescuer that way even. Very handy
