New commitment from D1 transfer

Wouldn’t call Ramsdell a blunder at all. He was poorly coached early on. By his senior year, I remember one of the old surly refs pulling him aside and telling him he’s become a ball player. Wojcik got something out of him.

There were plenty of other players we didn’t need on that team but Ramsdell wasn’t one of them. We can go through the collegiate all star team of players who were gifted to JP, but that got old 15 years ago. The Grahams, Green, Rochestie . . .

I remember a game on the road at SMU where Ramsdell got hit in the head and was bleeding profusely on the bench. He got taped up and came back in the game and carried us to a win.

A quick Google search shows he had a nice career overseas. Good for him.

Poindexter ( sapulpa ?) , Caleb Green would gladly have signed with Tulsa . John Phillips blundered by taking Charles Ramsdell instead .
Charles was actually a freak athlete and a really good kid. Remember he was a near 7' high jumper in HS. Charles' biggest struggle in college was defending guys who were much heavier than he was. Offensively he didn't fit the true post and was much more comfortable playing outside. He would be a decent complement to Igbanu in Haith's system as he was around a 35%. He might not be a starter but he had decent stats for a guy that was mostly a bench player except for his junior season.

And yes, Phillips screwed up by not offering Green. Where he really screwed up was taking the 2 Brazilians who barely got to play because of NCAA clearinghouse issues or Chris Wallace who wasn't a D1 level player.

He was a hell of a poker player too :)

Teichman was Brazilian and played all the time. Gonzalez was from Venezuela, played in a few games, and should have never been offered. Wallace would have been an OK role player but nothing more. We spent too much energy on Price, Collins, and McDade.

Yep. Teichmann played in 58 games for Tulsa, starting 52 of those. He averaged 22 minutes per game in his career, averaging 6.3 points and 6.1 rebounds.

Gonzalez only played one season, appearing in 24 games with 1 start. Averaged 2.7 points and 2.7 rebounds in 11 minutes per game.

One of my all-time favorite plays is when Teichmann dunked on Fresno and got T'd up for kicking his guy in the face

There were so few things to remember or recall about that era of TU basketball. There is literally nothing I recall about the 2003-2004 and 2004-2005 seasons except getting called by the athletic dept. and being asked to not repeatedly yell "It's time to fire Phillips" in the empty arena after every turnover.

Jarius Glenn was worth remembering. Had a stellar senior season in 2004-05, doing all he could to carry the team. Led TU in scoring (17.1), rebounding (6.2) and assists (3.4) that year. Hit 81% of his free throws and 35% from three. He was fun to watch...too bad he wasn't in a different era.

The first 9-20 team could have been better. They looked decent at times and still had a couple of good players left. The second one was a dumpster fire wrapped in fail wrapped in stale dip n dots. It was the worst thing we’ve ever put on the court. I remember being so happy when they announced that JP was stepping down on Christmas.

Price and McDade were two of my favorite players from those days. Despite the flack he took here Brett McDade was a good player.

McDade won us some games. That shot was ugly.

I don’t talk about Price much for a reason. That guy . . . He had a great hook shot and did nothing else. The three years he started were very frustrating. I remember Wojcik chasing him off the court and thinking he had a point.

He was a Buzz guy.

I liked McDade too. He lived with Ramsdell in a suite in Twin. He was actually a pretty quiet kid his FR yr. Again, on most D1 teams he would have been one of those glue guys off the bench. I will say this...JP brought in a bunch of kids that would have run through a wall for him. There wasn't ever really a lack of effort by any of those guys. But between JPs inability to coach and develop kids and the fact that most of the players were fringe D1 talents at best, and you end up with the previously alluded to dumpster fire wrapped in foil wrapped in Dippin' Dots.

True...he ended up being the only guy Buzz brought in because Dowdney's mom decided if she wasn't able to make goo-goo eyes at her son's coach she was going to send him to school closer to home to a lunatic who could actually coach.

His release got better through the years. I recall him having an uncanny knack at nailing halfcourt shots.

I was a McDade fan. It was cool to see him go out on top when we won the CBI his senior year.

Same thing could be said for Justin Hurtt.

Doudney is the guy everyone remembers, but Lou Amundson was the one that got away from that class. He was as under-the-radar as they get and turned into an all-conference player at UNLV and made himself a 9-year career in the NBA.

That was pre-board and pre-Twitter era for me so I wasn't as up-to-date on recruiting as much as I am now. I think I first joined the board when Graham was HC for football...partially to see what anyone knew about where he was leaving for as much as finding out about which recruits were sticking around or not.

Yeah JP cut him. Add him to the list.

Yep...Amundson withdrew his commitment when Buzz left for Tennessee.

Kenneth Kelly was awful. What did I miss?
Every JP era recruit showed up and we’d find out they couldn’t dribble with their left hand or something and needed a couple seasons to learn how to play basketball. Kelley came out the gate dropping bombs on OU. He leveled off as the season started sucking but he obviously was capable.

John Phillips blunder
Taking Deion James instead of Taylor Rochestie. Both kids made official visits the same week...TU decided to offer James instead of Rochestie.

Rochestie ended up at Tulane and then Washington State. He made the C-USA All-Freshman Team after averaging 10.9 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game. Then started at Washington State in his final three seasons, where he shot over 40% from three.

Something I remember from that era is wishing someone would’ve escorted Kenneth Kelley
to a class or 2. he was going to be a baller.
Kenneth Kelly was awful. What did I miss:
He could play all right...I saw him get 20+ @TCU, and was the best player on the floor...
One problem...He couldn't jump! I watched him in a HS game (Carter in So. Dallas) come
running down the middle of the lane on a drive, go straight up, and with both hands. touch
the rim with the ball and then draw it back and slam it....He did all of that, and then hung on
the rim, seemingly all in one motion......All of this at 6'1" or 2"? The outcome of the play?
No basket because the rim touching was ruled offensive interference, and besides that he
got a technical for hanging on the rim.....

Kenneth seemed to have a short attention span, and simply wouldn't go to class.....

God, I thought it was Rochestie preferring Tulane and us going on to James because Rochestie committed to them. I wasn't aware that it was a boneheaded move to James by the staff, thinking he was a better recruit than Rochestie. Boy oh boy. Now I'm crying over spilt milk.

Ivie. I was trying to remember his name. Lots of hype but he was always hurt and I think only saw the floor in one preseason game. Eventually quit basketball. I eeonder did he graduate from TU? I recall he was staying as a student.

You should be more careful with your milk. There are people in Africa that don't have any milk.
