Lost Restaurants of Tulsa

Totally forgot about that place. First and last time I ate there, the old man claimed he saw a mouse.
I bused tables and washed dishes at the Golden Drumstick, 11th and Yale, in high school. 75 cents and hour and all the dark meat chicken I could eat, and I ate a lot of it. What great fried chicken that was.
Jane's didn't make it in their new location near Decopolis?
So Jamil's opened at that stand alone place after the highway went in. Then opened at The Farm? Then they closed again?
I don't know of Jane's reopening somewhere else.
I don't think Jamil's is open at The Farm. Did it ever open?
There is still Jamil's in OKC. Different owner. Greg Gawey. Former Tulsan. Cousin of Albert Gs guy.
I looked it up and Jane's went out of business in their new location by Decopolis in between Utica and Peoria on 11th. Never paid much attention because it was ok, but not phenomenal enough for me to think about it.
Have you eaten there? Looks to be a kitchy 50's/60''s oriented diner with Camper Trailer Designed counter to order at. I didn't eat there now or when it was downtown.
It's a regional chain out of Texas, and wasn't anything to write home about as far as style, ambiance, etc. But I was sad to see Salata's close down on cherry st. during covid. Some of the dressings were phenomenal, and the offerings of various salad toppings were pretty decent. I liked it better than salad alley, and way better than cool greens. I think the only one still open is cool greens. Which was the worst one in my book. For same reason I was sad to see Ruby Tuesday close. They had a decent brunch menu and a nice salad bar.

A couple from my days at TU that weren’t great but good and inexpensive - Eastside Cafe (blue plate specials) and Harmon’s Home of the He Man Breakfast (served all day). The He Man was about $3 in the late 70’s. You walked out full and with plenty of post game meal money remaining for other activities.
My Pi Pizza on south Lewis had good deep dish pizza in the 70s.
Also, there was a small restaurant in the set of shops just east of Utica Square called The Glen. My girlfriend liked to go there. I think the Polo Grill is located there now.

Pretty good. The regular is plenty spicy for me. Tasty.
Those were a couple of my regular haunts during my TU days. I took a lot of drunk dates to Harmon's. Stumbled in with my fellow drunken buddies for the He-Man Breakfast too. East Side had great fried chicken, onion rings and lots of other great diner food.

If we’re talking pizza parlors Leah’s pizzeria and Shakeys we’re two of my favorites. I loved Godfathers when it first came to town, deep dish with thin crust and lots of toppings, but it didn’t take long until the crust thickened and took over the pizza. I was a big fan of Casa Bonita back in the 70s, you got a lot of food and it was pretty good. I took my current wife there a couple of years before they closed and the quality had really declined. We lived a few blocks north of Admiral so if we went to a cafeteria it was usually Bordens on Admiral and Sheridan. Also on Admiral between Sheridan and Memorial was Panchos Mexican food where you could get an all you could eat meal. There was also a steak house across the street but I can’t remember the name, they had a big cow statue on their sign.
I liked Casa Bonita and Crystal’s pizza as kid. I believe they were owned by the same company. Loved raising the flag at Casa Bonita! Crystal’s pepperoni pizza had the thin sliced pepperoni that were very crisp on the edges.
I also remember when the Penny’s in Southland had a restaurant inside. Ate there a few times after my Mom finished shopping because my Dad refused to go to Bordens Cafeteria next door. He always said he waited in too many chow lines in the Army and was not standing in line for food anymore 😀

Yes, Sirloin Stockade. Not fancy but cheap which was important with 4 kids. I liked Panchos and again it was cheap.
Sirloin Stockade at 21st & Garnett was the place to go when I was a kid. My parents always called it the “Sizzler” for some reason and never by it’s given name.
And Panchos made taquitos that the dog wouldn’t even touch.
Finally somebody that liked crystals, and had something good to say about their pizza. Everybody I know had derogatory things to say about their pizza. I think they had something addictive in the ingredients, at least for me. Maybe a little white powder that wasn't parmesan?
Two of my daughters that are in their early 40’s both talk about missing Crystal’s pizza. They were very young when we left Tulsa and probably only ate their once a year afterwards on our visits. Still they bring it up occasionally.
As a kid from Sapulpa Ken’s was our big hangout. Mr Bradley that owned the local Ken’s had a connection with Ken Selby who started Ken’s and later franchised Mazzio’s. The Sapulpa Ken’s is in a location about 1/2 a mile from the original location and still operating with the Bradley family. Not sure their are many Ken’s Pizza’s still in operation.
