We are back to basketball, I guess. There are 5 games today and two of them are postponed due to COVID or Health and Safety protocols. We are also starting conference play so changes to schedules are coming.

The American has made changes to the COVID 19 Operational Protocols. This is from the Houston website.

“The protocols were unanimously approved Monday by the conference's athletic directors and are subject to modification pending changes to national, state, local or NCAA guidelines.

The conference has established a minimum of seven eligible scholarship players and at least one coach to be available for a conference game to proceed as scheduled. Any team with fewer than seven available scholarship players due to COVID-19 maintains the option to play a game if desired.

If a team does not have enough players to play a conference game as scheduled, the game shall be canceled and declared a no-contest for purposes of conference standings. The involved institutions have the discretion to reschedule a game that was canceled, but there is no mandatory rescheduling policy.

If a team decides to not play a particular contest for reasons unrelated to COVID-19, the game shall be declared a no-contest for NCAA purposes, and a forfeit win and forfeit loss for purposes of conference standings.

The American may declare a no-contest in a conference game if federal, state, local or university health authorities prevent the teams from playing on the scheduled date if both teams are able to participate. All rescheduling options will be exhausted before declaring a no-contest.

Teams will be required to play a minimum of 75% of the average number of conference games played in order to be seeded by winning percentage for the conference championship. All teams falling below the 75% threshold will be seeded according to their winning percentage within that subgroup.”

There was a change to the Southern Illinois game. They were supposed to take on Missouri Baptist. That game shows Cancelled but according to Southern Illinois it is supposed to be rescheduled. They are now playing Grambling today who thought they ended their OOC with TCU on December 21.

I liked it better when teams forfeited due to Covid. The teams that managed their business better are penalized by this and the Cincinnatis and Houstons rewarded.

Anything to keep their circle jerk intact. Cincy, Houston, and UCF need to be able to keep giving each other nice little tugs on every single thread on the AAC board.

The No-contest rule allows some tampering (such as Cincy football) where you can avoid certain teams by yelling "COVID" and play teams you can beat. (Unless those teams call COVID on you ! ) Not sure the no-contest deal was a good thing for the conference.
They should have to certify that they are below the thresholds and get fined if they call a game where they actually had enough players/coaches. It shouldn't be an option to call a game unless they are below the thresholds. Especially BB where playing with a shorter bench isn't dangerous for the players unlike FB.

This is about protecting NCAA tourney revenue, obviously.

A lot of unknowns about the covids now obviously, probably the only thing I'm comfortable saying with absolute certainty is that covid will be used by the committee to benefit marginal big conference teams and penalize good smaller conference teams. Bad losses for the 8-11 teams in the big conferences will get excused because of covid and good smaller conference teams will get penalized for not having big wins over teams that backed out.
