This is just another Marxist plan from Comrade Obama. Like every socialist he will sell this as something govt should be doing in the first place, but in reality it will benefit his bigger govt agenda. Here's what we will end up funding - more sociology majors, more lieberal poets, more radical "journalists", more left wing artists, more spanish teachers, more arborists - in other words a lot of people who, if they fail in "real jobs" can be absorbed into the govt beaurocracy or onto the govt welfare rolls and will become "activists" to better their lives. In reality it is a backdoor way of making more people dependent on more and more govt.

I'd have less concern if the govt was going to fund community colleges that produce more of what we will need in the future. We will need more medical techs for instance, more mechanical engineers, more nurses, more math teachers etc. But with "universally" free education at the 2 year college level, there will be more people in those schools that probably shouldn't get a post HS degree - students that simply don't have the skills, brains or work ethic. And then there is the free education for illegals after they are amnestized. More free school to lure more illegals across the border. Obama's schemes just keep coming. But you get to pay for them. Got it? This is what Marxists do. It's what the term "hidden agenda" refers to.

Or how about "free" trade school? That's never in the same conversation and it actually produces people with job skills.

Gone are the days that college is just some entertaining holding place for 18 year olds for a few years.

Nothing is free. He's eliminating the college savings plan (529) for many middle class Americans and giving that money to pay for community college.

Nah, not "eliminating".

Just making it no different than many other investment vehicles and letting it die a natural death of obsolescence.

Distributions are taxed and can only be used for educational expenses...what's the point? Why are we making it harder to kids to attend top level 4 year colleges so kids can attend community colleges?

Elimination of the 529 is a trial balloon for the greater goal of eliminating/taking over management of the huge 401k pile.

If one tax sheltered investment that benefits primarily upper middle class can be eliminated and replaced with a program benefitting lower income then the potential for greater tinkering exists...

you have to think like a megalomaniacal socialist..

The tuition shoild not be free upfront.
You pay your tuition, and then if at the end of the semester, you have a 2.5 gpa, you get a refund.

The gist of proponents of this move has been that if you have any money leftover to actually save for college, you're rich. You deserve to give more of that away.

Nevermind that the average balance is something like $14k. Clearly trust fund Ivy leaguers there.
