Cycle of despair, basketball edition

ESPN's Jay Bilas picks every game in the 2023 Men's Basketball Tournament --- AND MISSES NEARLY EVERY ONE OF THEM! I love it. He is now like the average Joe in picking.

Alyn Thomsen, J.T. Ivie, and David Wishon have entered the thread.
Ivie was actually a really good basketball player. He lost his desire to play basketball b/c he enjoyed the frat life way too much.

Al Thomsen wasn't that bad as a senior. Had a few good games. Started as a senior.

I heard a friend tell me he was talking to Al at a party, and Al said, "You know Akeem the Dream. I'm Al the Pal."

Anyone remember Greg Ritter? A 7-5 guy that redshirted as a freshmen under J.D., then transferred.

I saw him pop up a few years later under transactions when he signed with the Milwaukee Bucks in the summer. Take a chance on the 7-5 dude, and cut him a day later when they realize what they have.

Just looked him up. He averaged 1.9 points and 1.1 rebounds for the Portland Pilots in 8 games. Actually a D-1 team that played in the NCAA tourney twice. So there's that.

Portland is in the WCC with Gonzaga and St. Mary's...another of the Catholic schools in the WCC.

When the entire team wants to transfer you have to think that maybe the coach isn’t going to work out

Thats a pretty big no confidence vote

This will probably go down as the worst hire in the long list of terrible TU hires.

Doomer until proven otherwise

The conversations that were had go a little something like this....'I'm sorry so and so, it's not going to work out, but we will help you find another school."

I'm not exactly a ray of sunshine in this lollipop and gumdrop world but even I think this is crazy. I'm not saying you're wrong - we just don't know yet - but there's certainly no factual basis for your point. If nothing else, given how bad some of our coaches have been, it's just statistically very unlikely that he'll be our worst hire. It's like being the dumbest kid at OSU. Routine "can't count to 5 using his fingers" stupid won't cut it, you gotta be really, really world changing stupid.

That said, I suspect the narrative that all the guys were shown the door is wishful thinking. Truth is probably in between you and those people. Boring but that's usually the case.

I don't think all of them were shown the door, but I think most of them were. I figure 1 to 3 weren't escorted off the premises.

I think one we absolutely wanted to keep and one other we were OK with either way. But Chito? Goodness man, to say you think we wanted most of them back is just outlandish.

The problem is that nobody on here knows. When people say how many wanted to stay, they're just reflecting their world view on the program. Panic is in despair so he says they all wanted to stay, the B&G koolaid crowd think we're just where we want to be, they'll tell you we wanted them all to go. I'm a middle of the road guy so I assume it's probably in the middle. But they're all just making it up. It's a Rorschach that tells you how they feel about the program, it tells you nothing about the facts of what happened. And the more vehemently and over the top they tell you, the less they know. Especially some of our more illustrious posters who try to spackle over ignorance with arrogance, thinking I suppose that anyone at all is fooled. You're honest and make it clear you're estimating, that's the humility of trusting your own knowledge, which some on here don't.

Is it really that hard to decipher? I think Chito just likes to argue.

Look, we all watched last season and saw a VERY VERY LOW talent rich basketball team. Bad shooting? Check; low athleticism? Check to most; low basketball IQ? Check. I don't get why you have to argue the point here. It's common sense that a roster refresh was needing to be done, so quit being contrarian just to do so.

I think it’s way to early to try and grade Konkol. The man inherited a bad program. We need to give him time to make changes. To say after one year that he is a bad coach ( or a good coach) is just wrong! We need to give the man a chance.
Amen.

Good thing that MOST posters on here aren't like Panic or Gold.

I'm also basing it on my opinion of the quality of the talent on the team, and averaging/culling down my own opinion. I think there are 5 or 6 that he might have wanted to keep, but I don't know his mind. I assume out of the 5 or 6 who were possibilities, that there were several that he wouldn't have agreed with wanting.

I figure some were outside possibilities that he wouldn't have wanted to keep because of attitude and/or playing abilities. I figured that encompassed around half of the players I thought were maybe's. But I know that a lot of the players he wouldn't have wanted.

A lot of it is difficult to navigate because we are dealing with attitude and playing ability. We didn't get to see all the attitude problems, just remnants of them displayed by players on the court. Also, I'm sure there was at least one or two possibilities who didn't display their attitude on their sleeve. They may have wanted to leave because they had an attitude about it that Konkol was not 100% aware of during the season.(stoics)

yeah, exactly. You have people going crazy in both directions. Though surprisingly there seem to be more over the top in love with Konkol than who want him gone. I think only winning 5 games was ironically better for him than winning 10 or 12. Winning 5 lets the B&G kool aid gang write off all problems as 100% the players with no responsibility for Konkol at all. Which is weird. If you watch sports at all, you've seen plenty of times when a team had terrible players and then a new coach came in and suddenly the players were pretty good.

Konkol won over 20 games SEVERAL times at La Tech, which is a very very hard place to win. Do you really think he just forgot how to coach?? Look at the talent that is coming in and it's MUCH better than what we have moved on from. You're overthinking this and arguing to argue.

Yeah, we won 5 games, some guys needed to go for sure. And there's a lot of in between that other posters pretend doesn't exist. Maybe a guy wanted to be closer to home. Maybe Konkol would have a guy stay in a certain role and the guy wanted a different role. Those aren't guys who left bc they don't like Konkol and they're not guys Konkol wanted to get rid of. The people saying they all wanted to get away from Konkol and the people saying Konkol wanted to get rid of them all aren't up to the task of nuance or thoughtfulness.

I'll make this simpler for you:

Last year's roster had one MAYBBEEEE 2-3 players that can help TU reach its heights again.

Fin.

I hate extreme opinions because more often than not, they aren't right. Nuance exists in 90% of situations. It is rarely black & white in real life. That's why I hate the way the world is going right now. It eliminates real and accomplishing discussions.

That was my initial & temporary, gut reaction.(knee jerk) I posted that right after I thought it. Regrettably somebody jumped on it and liked it, because he almost always agrees with that opinion towards TU basketball.

It’s been a while since we had a thread that makes me want to blow my brains out. But here it is.
Hey we’re in the off-season now… you have a lot of discussion items to look forward to:

1. Parking/people mad they have to walk more than a few hundred feet to the stadium

2. Uniforms - love/hate them

3. Concessions and their lack of staffing

4. Urinal troughs

5. The band (I’ll be chiming in on this)

6. Bowling in the south end zone

7. Bringing back baseball or adding wrestling

8. Angst over Gilcrease and AHHA

9. NIL (or lack there of)

10. Folks who care a little about Lamar

I believe you forgot a topic. The new mascot. But that is so profoundly important it may need its own thread.

Actually that is a cool topic to think about in the offseason. I just want them to bring back angry hurricane.(Nike) I don't want a huge dopey golden retriever mascot.

Oh geez how could I forget that?! Yes of course that will be widely discussed and complained about no matter what it ends up being 😂

So we have this cope from the Rose Colored Blue and Gold Glasses side.

The whole team was not talented and coach wanted them all gone so literally the entire team transferring (quitting on the program) is a good thing.

Coach didn't have any of his players (except for the guys that followed from Tech who also left) and this is all Haith's fault.

The team had a cancer or multiple that was not coaches fault and those guys are all gone.

Thats fine. I believe certain aspects of those copes. I respect people who have a much higher basketball IQ than I do. I really don't care to battle about it.

From a casual fan perspective because at this point thats all I am. I think a coach whose team got worse, who did not develop the players that he had, allowed said cancers to flourish, won 5 games and ran off or asked his entire roster to leave after year one of a rebuild is probably not the right guy for the job. I also think it is reasonable to think that we might start in a worse position for next year than we did at the beginning of this year. I also think it is a coaches job to coach his current roster to win. This team clearly gave up this year. They didn't play hard they got blown out by everyone. So looking at the results and lack of returning players I think we are probably screwed for a while.

This is a doom thread. Respect the Doom.

Everything about this post is crazy town.

Breh, you should probably sit this one out, breh.

The funniest part about this is you said we will start this season worse off than last? get a grip. This shows me that you are the definition of a casual fan and aren't following the players we are bringing in.

Stick to surfing, breh.
