So the annual Festival de San Fermin, including the 7 days of the running of the bulls in Pamplona kicked off Sunday/Monday. Back when I was younger (and AESPN would show the final day's running live on ESPN) I used to host a watch party that began at midnight because the actual running occurred at 8am local Spanish time (2am Tulsa time). ESPN's production was always done right too...they'd have a "Starting Line Up" of the 6 bulls including weight, breeder, horn span (tip to tip), etc. Then they'd recap the previous day providing stats (total run time, injuries, # of gorings). Most of the run last between 2:15-2:30 and anything over 3 minutes and you knew there was some nastiness along the course.

Anyway, there is a YouTube has a channel called RTVE where you can watch live or for us old farts who can't stay up that late anymore, you can watch the next day. They don't do the starting lineups or stats, but they do have a highlights clip of each day called Los Mejores Momentos (Major Moments).

Perhaps the biggest question mark on the team, and possibly the most important, is how well Tulsa's offensive line will play this season.

Went to womens practice today first thing I will say is Nelp can really coach. Delanie is back full speed and looked good. Of the new girls McKayla Miller looked good all our veterans looked good. Including Denise , Hadley and Maddie of course Delanie looked the best. The new big girl had a brace on her knee so not practicing today. Again I will say Nelp makes a difference. Denise made two or three steals

Everything is extemely boxy now and its not easy on the eyes. Previously most things had soft edges and now everything is very defined and sharp. Also, the dark version is almost impossible to see with our dark blue thread words. I have visual looming syndrome, also known as SEES (Sharp-Edge Eye Syndrome). Sharp points are hard to look at and cause pain in the eyes and head. This is killer for me.

God, reading his columns is such a breath of fresh air. He has taken a big step up in quality for the paper.

Banks Bowen @banks_bowen is expecting a big season this fall at 6A Lawrence High. The 6’3” 200 lb 2025 quarterback did it all last year with 1017 yards rushing and 1676 passing yards. With multiple D1 offers, Bowen recently committed to Tulsa to continue his football career. He was a first team Sports in Kansas non-senior pick last year.

The American Athletic Conference has released its 2024-25 men’s basketball schedule, set to run from December 29, 2024, through May 9, 2025. The season culminates in the American Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Championship at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas from May 12-16.
Tulsa’s schedule includes 12 conference opponents, with six played twice (home and away) and the remaining six split evenly between home games at the Donald W. Reynolds Center and away fixtures.
At home, Tulsa will host Charlotte, East Carolina, and Florida Atlantic. Last season, Tulsa faced East Carolina and Florida Atlantic on the road and defeated Charlotte at home in a closely contested late February game. Florida Atlantic, under new head coach John Jakus, enters the season after consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances.
Tulsa will return to FedExForum for the first time in three seasons to face Memphis in a road-only game. They will also travel to face South Florida, the regular-season tournament champions, and North Texas, marking their first trip since the Mean Green joined the conference.
The Golden Hurricane will have home-and-home series against UAB, Tulane, Wichita State, Rice, Temple, and UTSA, all regular season tournament champions.
Head coach Eric Konkol, entering his third season, led Tulsa to a 16-15 overall record and a 7-11 conference mark in 2023-24.
Returning players include seniors Jared Garcia and junior Isaiah Barnes, along with graduate guard Keaston Willis, who brings over 1,600 points and 300 3-pointers to the team despite missing most of last season due to injury. Also returning are American All-Freshman selections Tyshawn Archie and Matt Reed, along with junior Jesaiah McWright, all of whom played significant roles off the bench last season.
Tulsa’s squad for the upcoming season will feature seven newcomers, a mix of transfers and true freshmen.

So I spent last Wednesday and Thursday at Lucas Oil Stadium taking in the US Olympic Swim trials. Observations: 1) Katie Ledecky is an absolute freak athlete. She swam her 1500M final on Wednesday night, the same night the women swam their 100M final. After the 100M final the women interviewed were all winded and gasping for air. After Ledecky pretty much lapped the entire field in the 1500 (30 lengths of the pool), she gets out and does her interview and you could barely tell she spent the previous 15 minutes swimming what essentially is a mile. And she kicks very little in that race...it's almost all only her arms. Crazy. 2) Lucas Oil is a really nice stadium and their concessions prices were surprisingly low. Bottle of water was $3.50. I know last time I was at OneOK we paid $5.00 for a bottle of water. 3) The incredibly slim margins between going to the Olympics and not must be gut wrenching and heartbreaking. We saw a 100M swim off FOR 6th PLACE on Thursday AM. Why? Because 6th place goes to the Olympics as an alternate on the women's 4x100 relay as swimmer 3-6 typically will swim the prelims and semis of that even before spots 1 and 2 swim in the finals. The swim off margin was .04 seconds...half a finger length. We also saw a swim off for the men's 50M free for 17th place...why? Because that spot is the 1st alternate into the semifinals if a swimmer scratches. That race was determined by .01, or a fingernail. Apparently the 50M free semifinals resulted in a tie for 8th place which was settled on Friday AM (we had gone back to StL at that point). The 1st race of the swim off was again a tie. The swimmers came back 30 min later to settle it AGAIN and this time the margin was .02. Just ridiculous how fast these swimmers are.

My daughter had a swim meet in St. Louis Friday-Sunday. Not as fast My daughter did drop a collective 106 seconds of time from her 8 events. That was a good thing. She also qualified for the state meet in the 100M butterfly which was a goal of hers. She also met 8 different B standard times (every event she swam) which opens the door for her to some other swim meets. She's put in a lot of work and she seems to really be enjoying the swimming thing.

Remarkable thing...I watched a 12 year old girl from St. Louis swim a 28 second 50M free style yesterday. That's about 4.5 seconds off the world record which is 23 seconds and some change. She took 1 breath in the race and I swear she looked like a dolphin gliding through the water. Remember the name Emma Fouke in 4 years for the Olympic trials. We did see 1 16 year old in the trials and there were a number of 17 year olds who made it there as well.

3-star running back Chase Garnett has been a high-priority recruiting target for Tulsa, and he plans to announce his college choice on July 12 at 5 pm. The Argyle (TX) Liberty Christian product says that Tulsa remains in his top five after a round of official visits in June.

The difference a few months made to Anthony Watkins at TU meant all the world in his performance. He went from being a backup rotation guy to being The Guy at running back for Tulsa. Watkins now clearly is the leader for the Hurricane at running back in what second-year TU coach Kevin Wilson believes is a talented room that should excel in 2024.
