UTSA

High press. Pick up man to man just your side of the half court line. Teams like UTSA and Illinois St don’t have the size to really hurt you inside so they shoot from 3 a lot. You know this so play disciplined man to man, stay with your guy and call switches on the screens. If you hedge, stay with the ball carrier long enough to switch or for his man to recover and resume guarding him. The last 3 they hit and Scott is backing down to the foul line- let him go to the damn basket. When you’re up 7-8 in the last 2 minutes only 2 things can hurt you- not making your FTs and letting the other team shoot uncontested 3s. When you shot FTs as well as we normally do, LET THEM GO TO THE DAMN BASKET WITHOUT FOULING. They can’t close the gap by getting 2 and then giving up 2 on the other end.
Everybody was doing so well ignoring him, and then you had to go and respond.

Our D definitely needs some work... but they were throwing up prayers and making them. The game was not nearly as close as the final score indicated.

Been a while since TU scores 100 in regulation of game, so that’s pretty cool.

Someone got through to Wheeler to constantly crash the offensive glass. Two nice putback dunks in this first half.

Nice 5-0 run while trying to type this message. TU up 48-39.

As we were discussing how impressive those putback dunks always are, the announcers also wondered what it must feel like to be able to do that.

We got free chalupas for 100 in the Self years. So all the time.
Taco bell? I remember the free Whoppers from BK. I feel like we got a milk discount the same years Brennan Marion was getting me free milk. Problem was we never scored 100 points under DW and I think the most we ever got was like a .25 discount for scoring 75 points and that only happened a few times. Did we ever get anything from Arbys, like free curly fries in the 90s?

Arby's had something to do with turnovers in the late 90s/early 2000s...

CHA-LU-PAH! was a pretty funny chant once we got into the 90s points-wise.

During the Woj years I proposed that we get half a Whopper whenever we scored 50.
We should have arranged with Burger King to offer a Whopper Jr with the onions, pickles and tomatoes arranged in Seething Doug-face on the burger

We won't be an NCAA team until Haith is gone imo, hope I'm wrong

That ncaa tourney team doesn’t count because reasons.

We were a play-in team. It wouldn't have counted for any of our other coaches. They would have all had NIT's on their resume for that kind of performance and really we shouldn't have even received what we did.

The NCAA's still start at 64 in my opinion.

This is what’s known as a “self-own”

Tell that to the AAC who get an extra NCAA tournament share of $ because of our appearance.

However, that does not mean I will cheer against Tulsa to make a point, I will gladly eat crow

That wasn't his players, like I said, I hope I'm wrong, but I just don't see it, we aren't horrible, but we aren't an NCAA tournament team
I don't think this is a terrible opinion to share. I think we all have major concerns with the defense and rebounding against bigger, more physical teams and that is the part that makes it difficult for us to achieve enough consistency to win enough games to be an at large right now. Maybe Haith should go all Loyola Marymount and just focus on out scoring every team 120-110.

Does that mean Danny Manning’s NCAA appearance shouldn’t count since those weren’t players he recruited?

I get what you’re saying and you may be right about Haith, but an NCAA appearance is an NCAA appearance. We played, we lost, and the conference got NCAA credits for our appearance.

To quote Tulsa’s all time winningest coach (who never made an NCAA appearance): it is what it is.

Big picture we don't seem to be improving very much. Seems like every year we have some structural issue with the composition of the team.

We have improved tremendously on offense this season. Our defense and rebounding have taken a dive though. There were glimpses of improved rebounding against UTSA on Tuesday. I have my blue and gold glasses sinched tight on my face in hopes that continues.

I definitely agree with the NCAA appearance, I'm just not for sure we can get back to that with his players

:rolleyes:Well said....Last year, although they were young, we had the bigs, but our
guard play was iffey at best.....

This year, just the opposite....If we still had TK and Magnay we would have
little doubt that we would be an at large in the NCAA....

Our last scholarship will hopefully go to a strong rebounding, defensive minded
center.....With the recruits we have in hand, and the core (less Etou, Wheeler,
and Hernderson) of our team returning for next season, we may be back in
the hunt.....

Hope so!

Although a big component of both our defensive and rebounding woes is the tallest guy on the team told his coach in late SEPTEMBER that he was turning pro! Who does that? (Other than Emmanuel Mudiay). Magnay leaving left a bigger void in both those areas than anyone wants to admit because with him, we are, IMO, no doubt an NCAA tournament team. If he tells Haith in June, there may be a grad transfer or some other kid he can grab to fill that void. September/October leaves the coach no chance to fill that spot or need immediately.

To the surprise of absolutely nobody, Senior says it way better than I did.

You know way more about basketball than I do so you're probably right. I try to be fair in judging people and Haith legitimately had some challenges, having a class of 7 or 9 or whatever will take a few years to work through especially at a place like TU where you can't just go sign 7 top 50 players and let them sort it out. If we're signing 7 guys, a few are going to be leaps of faith. And I get that this year there are young players and guys who haven't played together before. It just is starting to feel like it's always something, all the things being reasonable but at some point it just needs to get fixed. Maybe we're almost there, I hope so, but at some point, a bunch of reasonable excuses start to add up into something more.

Taplin/Jeffries/Etou is 60% of a starting lineup for an NCAA tournament team. The trouble is finding 2 more starters from the Rest of the group (and playing those 3 more than 26 minutes per game). Joiner is a possibility. And Igbanu?

If Magnay and/or Edogi hadn't left there wouldn't be a need for any excuses. Magnay left us in the lurch, not Haith's fault.

Yeah I totally agree. It's kind of like the employee who's late one day because he's sick, the next because his car broke down, then his kids' nanny was out, then he had jury duty, then he had to have a plumber out, then his kid needed to go to the dentist.... maybe it's all true and just a run of rotten luck. To be clear, I'm not passing judgment, I'm just starting to get worried.

To be clear though upto this point on the season the defense and rebounding have been so poor the improvement on offense doesn't seem to be as apparent. Currently, this team is like the Malzahn/Morris/Graham TU football teams, they are only going to win by outscoring the opponent. Not by shutting somebody down, which can lead to losing to teams with less talent, esp. in basketball.

Excellent analogy.
