Tulane game thread

A Division 1 coach that you know well once told me you zone teams who are better than you and man the teams weaker than you. Usually correct.
Nolan Richardson Theorem #1: Never lose the first five minutes of the second half.

Haith drives me nuts the way they come back out slow or sloppy.

I didn't get to see the game, so my comments are purely based on box score.

I have to hunt for games we win without Richie getting 20 mins.

Two players are getting 28mins a game and 23m a game are killing us, I keep hearing Haith say if you don't produce you will sit. These two are by far the worse producers in the bunch.

Jackson finally passed KES but is still averaging less minutes than Haywood and way out producing him. Richie is getting a full 10m and 5m less a game than those while easily out producing both and shooting better from outside. Richie's average pts per game are higher with less minutes than both and his rebounding is better that KES and on 40m would be roughly the same as Haywood.

That's literally tying your hands behind your back, especially considering how much time they are on the court together.

Oh and scrap the zone Haith. It should be an occasional switch, we clearly can go man and need to with that terrible rotation to shooters right now, something those two sucking up minutes are also doing poorly.

That five minutes decides the game 90% of the time.

If you are down big and come out hard, they will usually end up breaking down and it's a game with you having the momentum and them doubting

If it's close you set the tone and build confidence you can take over and finish.

If you're ahead it's going to give you separation or you are stomping on them before they can get back up.

The only other time period that is any where near as important is the las 90 seconds, but if you took care of business for that five minutes that 90 seconds is often moot.

And Frank replaces him with the coaching giant of Toby Lane.SMH
I'm thinking Haith came in under budget with Toby Lane.

If he didn't then that's one more thing wrong with Frank Haith's coaching, among the multitudes.

No coach in America could have a winning record with this roster. Ugboh and Idowu hit a couple of bunnies
to start the game and TU simply doesn’t have anyone that can reliably shoot and make a three .
There’s a reason these transfers left their respective universities and. came to Tulsa....they were
sitting on the bench .

Haith had a winning record with pretty much the same roster last season. Moreover, when he came to Tulsa he was supposed to be a small ball guru. Since he got here he’s spurned shooting and tried to develop big men. It makes no sense.

For the most part Haith’s best seasons have come from rosters put together by other coaches. Not sure if it’s recruiting or evaluation or maybe both.

Good post. Rule of thumb. Never take a JUCO or a transfer who doesn't start for his team. Self told me this several years ago. The only exception might be a transfer from Kansas, Kentucky or Duke.

Yeah never take a Juco player and then miss out on NBA talent like Daquan Jefferies. Excellent strategy

I think you missed a most important qualifier in that sentence.

Jeffries started for Western Texas. Even if he hadn't started to avoid injury, that would have been an exception to the rule, because we knew what he had from ORU.

Not really.....Are you equating Horne, Hill and Igbanu to KES, Haywood and Idowu??
Other than Jackson and Rachal, those three would probably have been the MVPs on
our roster this year...

Some forget, that for the last half of last season, Hill turned out to be an excellent
defender, as well as a play maker with minimum TOs.....

I liked Hill a lot as a player. I was disappointed when he chose to leave. I like Williams too but I wouldn't be surprised if he left after this season along with Shumate and Urbancic.

Hill was not very good. I think Williams isn't too much different in terms of overall impact. Igbanu clearly was good, but between Idowu, a former 4 star recruit, and a former ACC starter Haith should have been able to do something comparable in terms of production. Richie could be Horne if Haith would let him.

Haywood has been much better the last 2-3 games where he hasn't forced shots as much. He has been really active on the glass, his defense is a positive, and when he tries to get into the lane first, he makes everyone around him much more dangerous. KES is having an identity problem. He forces way too many things, including shots from outside. He is really smooth getting into the lane off the dribble but he plays with his head down and doesn't see the pass when it is needed. I will say his pull-up from 8-10 feet is solid. Joiner's too. And Ritchie needs to play more and when he's actually in there, pull the damn trigger when you catch the ball with space. Everyone hesitates and shoots a forced shot, out of rhythm, with defender closing down. Ritchie should have the green light to shoot whenever he touches the ball.
