Tubby out at Memphis more than likely

I’m torn. Part of me wants Tubby to have one more coaching stint at a program the appreciates him. The other part of me wants him to retire and give the one finger salute to Memphis so they have to pay him millions while he relaxes and enjoys his retirement.

I agree, plus I'm tired of cheering against Tubby while he coaches at Memphis.

GO TU!!!!

Apparently the 4pm meeting that was supposed to happen between Tubby and the Memphis Pres, prompting every Memphis media outlet to stalk the President’s office...never happened...or at least not in the President’s office and Tubby is still officially the coach. Weird

Memphis didn't include an offset clause so he could always do both.

2018 4-star pg Alex Lomax, who was committed to Wichita State, has been granted his release and is expected to sign with Memphis. He plays at Hardaway’s East HS in Memphis.

Funny that he wouldn’t commit to Memphis while Tubby was there. Seems that Hardaway was encouraging Memphis HS players to go elsewhere.

The fact he may have been steering players away from Tubby so he could get the job is intriguing.

A memphis fan has been talking about him leaving for Memphis ever since Tubby got fired on the AAC boards. He had inside info.

Apparently Lomax has listed Penny as his guardian and some want the university to pay his way without using a scholarship. Memphis seems intent on losing another banner from the rafters with bending NCAA rules as far as they can again.

Coach as guardian of Memphis player. You'd think their would be a conflict of interest there, somewhere. Wonder when he became guardian. This seems like a slow building trainwreck at Memphis. They better hope Penny has Calipari's nine lives.

Pro-tip: Don’t attempt to discuss NCAA tampering with regards to this on Twitter. Or you’ll have to deal with countless responses from Memphis fans that don’t know squat about NCAA bylaws telling you you’re jealous and that Tubby sucks and Penny is the best ever.

I learned this the hard way.

I believe 5th grade.

So in this particular case there’s probably no problems. Unless there’s evidence Penny dissuaded him from going to Memphis with the intent of it giving him leverage to get Tubby fired.

You mean collusion...

A release within a conference ( Wichita to Memphis) is unheard of. I guess Wichita made an exception for the "guardianship". All this makes the Rod Thompson situation that more interesting. Is Rod our Penny Hardaway of the future? Rod has exhibited the highest ethics of anyone and hate to compare him to Penny.

Curious....does Penny have a dirty history as a coach? Keep seeing it mentioned.

Nothing concrete, but if you have Tubby and his staff thinking that Penny is pushing kids away from Tubby to force Tubby's ouster so he can get the job, that's pretty dirty. That's no different than the AAU runners getting paid to get kids to transfer to power conference schools ala Jordan Clarkson.

Even considering Larry Brown is a little bit dingy. Apparently the AD turned Penny's request down to hire Larry Brown.

"A very bizarre Penny Hardaway-Larry Brown dream team will not be formed at Memphis.

Though there were some rumors that Hardaway had interest in bringing Brown on as an assistant upon landing the Memphis job, ESPN’s Jeff Goodman reported that “multiple NCAA issues” will scuttle that possibility."

So Memphis hasn't completely sold its soul

I think it’s all being inferred at the moment. Tubby was basically fired because he couldn’t sign the top Memphis kids. Lots of those kids play for Penny’s AAU team. Marshall specifically said Lomax signed with WSU because Penny told him too. Now that Penny is coach Lomax wants out of his LOI to play for Memphis. No smoking gun but it’s easy to connect the dots.

Tubby was fired because he couldn’t put butts in the seats and failed to generate any excitement among the fan base....both obviously related. Attendance dropped over 3000 from his first season to his second and was at at 45 year low. That will get you fired.

It’s all related. If those kids Penny steered to other programs had signed with the hometown school then the attendance drop off probably wouldn’t have happened. Tubby can coach. Give him some talent and he’ll win a lot of games. If you listen to the Memphis posters he “didn’t want to sign local players”. I don’t think he was turning down 4 and 5 star players that wanted to go to Memphis. I think he didn’t want daddy Lawson sitting on the bench telling him what to do and I think he had Penny (and maybe others) deliberately steering those kids away from Memphis. This was a no win situation for Tubby from day one, well except for the money.

Lomax may have been “sent” to Marshall as a “ holding pattern deal” until Penny got Tubby out. Was quickly released by WSU. Interesting that he was “sent” to a Tubby competitor.

Tubby burnt a number of bridges in the Memphis area basketball arena when he took the job. He lost four top 100 commitments/players his first six months at Memphis. If Tubby keeps half those players he’s doesn’t see a free fall in fan support for him imo. I so think it’s clear he upset Lawson and in turn Penny with Lawson’s demotion to a non-coaching position. I’m guessing that action had much more to do with the hostility toward Tubby than a grand plan by Penny to become coach. I do think it’s clear that Memphis area recruiting was dead to Tubby.

Here’s an article about the situation written a year ago by CBSports.

What I find most interesting is Tubby’s contract is such that Memphis has to pay him EVEN IF he takes another job.

Memphis may have the money to spend on coaches, but intelligence is clearly not their strong suit.

We all know why Tubby demoted Lawson. It was to bring Saul in as a full time assistant with Pooh. Saul was his downfall at Kentucky, playing PG when Tubby would not recruit a PG. Tubby is family first and that won't get you a long way in today's dog eat dog college basketball world. I suspect Lawson and Penny are tight and have planned this for a long time especially with Team Penny having his next son and the # 1 player in the country as well. With Penny's constant run- ins with the Tennessee High school association, I suspect there will be people ready to assist the NCAA with any improprieties of which they have knowledge. The ugliness of the Memphis situation is not going away soon.

Devil's advocate:

If Penny basically raised the kid and he didn't like Tubby, his style of ball, or whatever... it makes sense to steer the kid away from Memphis so long as he doesn't like the situation. Even if the situation was "I wanted that job, screw them," so long as it was his kid it might be petty, but understandable. You can then logically extend that to other kids he coaches or mentors: "Oh Memphis? I don't know, seems like the program has fallen off. I'm not so sure..."

Clearly there is some line where you are subverting a school to leverage your own career that is inapproproiate, but I imagine that's a hard line to draw. If someone really doesn't like a coach or feels slighted by a program, surely they don't have to pretend to be neutral with their players, mentees, or whatever?

(and the Tulsa fans shouted "crucify him, crucify him" :) )

Tubby was short sighted at best and stupid at worst for demoting Lawson (their best recruiter) to a non-coaching position where even if he wanted to he couldn’t recruit so he could hire his son. If he wasn’t aware of the effect such a move would have on Memphis area recruiting he should have. Much of the mess at Memphis was self-created. If Tubby keeps Lawson as an assistant coach he is signing those kids and have a job today imo.

It will be interesting to see Tubby’s next move. He could coach next year, take a year off to regroup, or just retire.

I hope he takes a year off. He’s earned it & probably needs it, he’ll be 67 this offseason. If he takes another job this next season, it will be more for Saul & Pooh than for him.
