Can anyone find these games online?

I’ve watched the Miami and UNC games on-line.

BTW - so awesome watching that team play. I didn’t realize they caused an average of 21 turnovers/game.

Wow.

Agree...TU missed so many bunnies and wide-open threes.

I watched the live version at Varsity Sports Grill (61st and Memorial).

I remember thinking that game was one of the worst shooting games Harrington ever had.

I flew down on Saturday. I couldn’t believe it was over. That year was so affecting. That’s why I don’t understand the way they threw up all over the anniversary. It was the coolest thing ever at TU.

We knew we were going to be pretty good. I didn’t go to the ORU game, but listened to it in the car with a buddy of mine. We got hacked off. But then that team didn’t lose until it played Fresno. And somehow it lost to those bastards three times. But for that, we would have been in the top 10. Everyone in town loved that team. ESPN ran multiple stories about us.

You could do a documentary tying so many things that changed in the city the next 20 years to that team. Random effing example: Jacob Fred did an album titled “Self is gone,” based on the keyboard player seeing the headline in the paper and thinking it was a Buddhist thing. I’m not making this up. Jacob Fred broke up (at least the Wu Tang version of Jacob Fred with 35 people) and played a ton of shows at the Bowery that summer. I would argue the existence of that little scene spurred Tulsa music and downtown development the next 20 years. There was nothing. Cain’s didn’t even have concerts you’d want to go to. But people went for that. The Self is Gone songs are the songs they played that summer. No one remembers that and Jacob Fred isn’t really a thing anymore.

UNC couldn’t believe they won. They also had a ho hum attitude about another Final Four. There’s so much about that game that was wrong. BS calls on Coley. Missed shots. All shorts of referee shenanigans. James Worthy did the color commentary.

I remember listening to the Tennessee game on the radio. I was driving back from getting something to eat and switch it to 104.5 and they were freaking out that TU won. It was at that moment I knew it was going to be a special season. I was at the ORU game and that was so frustrating as was the Fresno loss in the Reynolds center where, we were walking home and TU fans were yelling at each other and almost getting into fights because everybody was so pissed off.

The UNC game was frustrating because we weren’t used to those guys missing shots. Then, Dante came in late and almost won it by himself. You’re right, UNC couldn’t believe they pulled that off.

Listening to Tony Heard nail the 3 at SMU outside in my dad’s truck because we couldn’t get 740 (or was it 1430) indoors in Bristow was one of the best moments of my childhood

1430 back then.

I made someone cry I yelled so much during the SMU game. They told me my team would lose. They didn’t.

No one would play us. We played this horrible home schedule. Wojcik would have been embarrassed. I remember we would just light up these awful teams that game through. I remember an exhibition game where the other team couldn’t get the ball across midcourt for about five minutes of game time. Coley and Heard were that good.

That’s why the Tennessee game was so big. Both teams got burned by officials. We had to play this unknown freshman named Charlie Davis. He kicked their ass.

I think the last home game was TCU with Billy Tubbs. The smart people got seats behind the TCU bench. Billy (who famously said he would never come to Tulsa ever again when he was at OU, even though he is from here) blew a kiss to fans when they booed him. We absolutely obliterated those idiots. David Shelton scored more then they did in the first half.

Such a special and memorable year. A bunch of us went to a ton of road games, including SMU.

I bet there were over 3,000 TU fans there.

The ORU loss was the most pissed off I think I had ever been (at that time in my life).

It’s great to be able to argue that TU was the best team in the country that year.

That SMU game was nuts! My head hurt so bad from yelling but I couldn’t stop because they wouldn’t stop fighting!

I don't think we were ever behind at halftime the whole season until the last game. I was in Nashville, Austin and on one of the 9 buses we took from TU to SMU.

Not sure if Self had the guys up for the game against UNC as much as against Cincy. Lots of celebration after Miami instead of concentrating on UNC. Self to this day says he would have done a few things differently.

Dante nearly stole the game back from UNC in his limited minutes. We were the better team for once and lost.....That's what hurt so much.

I think we were leading UNC at halftime, as well.

You are probably right. If so we may have led at half time in every game. Harrington and Shelton had a really tough day. And Peppers from UNC football just dominated us on the boards inside and defensively.

Was that SMU game the one where Kurtz got the inbound pass and took it to the hoop for the win?

I knew it was gonna be special when we dominated Rhode Island and St Joe's on the road... I think we played st Joe's on the road very early. Anyway... we dominated them.

I remember being nervous about that opener at Rhode Island. It was the year after Lamar Odom, but they were still a good program and opening the season on the road is always tough. The game was on a Sunday and for whatever reason, I had volunteered to work the sound booth at church. That seemed like a horrible misstep until I realized that I could sneak a handheld radio into the booth and listen through my headphones without anyone thinking twice about it. We were up 15-0 within the first 4 minutes. Coley dominated.

When the service ended, my dad made a beeline to the back and I assumed I was about to get chewed out for screwing up the sound. Instead, he snuck into the booth and asked me what the score was.

I was driving back from a debate tournament somewhere. Goldfan83 was in the back of the van. I think we thought TU might be decent.

I felt the same way playing against Rhode Island that year & also remember thinking about Lamar (he was amazing that previous year for them in the tournament).

That Cincinnati team was without Kenyon Martin but I remember that guy losing his cool after Eric Coley stole the ball & bashed on the fast break. Who was that? Demarr something? Lol he hit Eric in the head with the ball & we proceeded to end their season in style. Best team ever. I still can’t we didn’t make the final 4 that year. Stupid Joe Forte & Ed Cota.

Breaking out completely, now he's posting on all boards.

I remember listening to every free throw of the Rhode Island game, knowing that this was a "necessary game" to win on the road to have a shot at the NCAA's. Also I was driving to Arkansas for Christmas listening to TU-Tennessee and the reception was going in and out. Another must win to get us to the tournament. That's one reason that several of us who have seen (or heard) these "must win" early games years ago get so frustrated at the unpreparedness of the current regime in early season games.

TU was up by 1 at halftime...31-30.

Unfortunately, UNC went on an immediate run in the second half to take the lead. Forte went nuts.

They outrebounded us 40-29 with Peppers coming over from football to kill us.

We started the same starters 35 out of 37 games that year and Kevin Johnson, Charlie Davis and McDaniel did not even play in several games.

We couldn’t travel that year because Mrs Blue Ox was about 8 3/4 months pregnant and had to stay near home. She literally thought the baby was coming during the Miami game when Reynolds started to get really loud.

That little one is now a Sophomore at the University.

Speaking of little ones now grown and at TU.
My HS school senior decided yesterday that he will be attending TU in the fall! He has a little over %50 of it paid for through their initial scholarship offer. We’re hoping to get more once he’s enrolled but, I’m not sure how that process works and we’re working through that :)

I had a tough time following the team that year because I was here in Nevada and we didn’t have the wall-to-wall broadcasting we have now. The Tennessee win was the one that stands out to me because a blowout win over a top 20 team got them all over the news. I honestly don’t remember if I saw any other games before the tournament started.

Congratulations to your future student. The university no longer offers scholarships for students with alumni parents, but we did learn that the recruiters have small scholarship pools available to use at their discretion. I believe those are called TU Commitment awards and are valid for all 4 years. It doesn’t hurt to ask and every little bit helps.

Also make sure that your son has his FAFSA completed and filed on time. The interest rate is very favorable for the unsubsidized loan ($5,500 for Freshmen) and is likely lower than the rate a 529 account is earning.

Thanks!
We’ve done the FAFSA side. I’ll check on the Commitment one!

I remember listening to the Tennessee game on the radio.

Me too...We had been invited to my nieces pre-Xmas party, and as we pulled
up into their drive, the game was grinding down, Charlie Davis, who hadn't
done much until then, was having a great game, as was David Shelton...I
couldn't go into the house until we had locked it up....Important game for us,
as Self was just emerging as a super star coach....

I remember we got Shelton out of JUCO, and from memory, he had been
slated to go to Cincy before we got him....He was a tough hombre, and with
an attitude that was a definite throw-back to the Rob Washington, Larry
Cheatum, Eldridge Webb, and Steve Bracey group from Boys' HS in
Brooklyn.....He had a gift, much like Igbanu in a way, of making you foul him...

That era was probably the most thrilling to fans in any era in TU BB history...
It was so 'in' to be a TU fan at that time....Some of our OOC games against
nobodies drew incredible crowds.....

Great memories.....

I was actually celebrating y2k in Lebanon visiting family.

Was delighted to see we beat TN and won that tourney esp. after watching the ORU loss.

Never saw a team play defense like that. Not even Nolan's teams.

And Kurtz was a special piece we never had on a TU team before. Mobile true center who could run the floor and score in the post without dribbling. He was our X factor.
