With 4 juniors on the roster, seems likely that the person who's the coach at the end of next year will need to recruit a class of at least 6 guys, we'd want the new coach to get to have a full recruiting cycle filling those spots, so need to hire the new guy this year, right? You're welcome, Justin.

I still feel that the current coach will be allowed to flounder for another year. We’ve got to get the football mess fixed first, Olympic sports can wait.

Seems to me there are 2 scenarios where you give him another year - 1) you still think maybe he's the guy and want to give him another year to show you something or develop, or 2) you just can't do it for practical reasons (e.g., you can't afford the buy out, don't have the internal resources to build up 2 programs at once, have powerful PTSD from the FB search and need a lot of therapy before going back to battle, etc.). Nobody thinks it's 1), sooo...

Justin Moore has not been hesitant to move quickly if things are going south. Dickson let things linger on and on. The people supplying the increased NIL will not be satisfied with the bottom half of the AAC any more.
We're so low, we can't even see the top of the bottom half of the AAC.

Drboobay is so pissed about BB that he's turning sarcastic and churlish. Don't think I've ever seen that from him before.
Yes and I am sure it is getting old.

I would be better off just turning it all off. But I am curious about the portal activity in football and cannot seem to ignore the basketball threads.

Option #2 is the most likely scenario.

Rosters are so fluid now due to the portal that I’m not sure it matters. Trying to predict how many spots we will need to fill 18 months out is practically impossible
I suspect it's a pretty simple actuarial task (as compared to e.g., pricing life insurance policies). I bet the head of recruiting could give you a pretty accurate idea of how many slots we'll have open. Spitballing it, baseline is 4 plus assume 2 losses, so 6. If a couple of the 4 leave after this year, then it's 2+2 or 4. Based on history and current situation, Konkol would probably bring in at least 1 senior or grad if some of the jrs left. Which puts us at 4-2+1+2 or 5. If non-jrs leave and get replaced with other grad/srs, then the number goes up. My guess would be 5 or 6. Tho I could see it being as many as 7, probably more likely 7 than 4, tho 4 is possible. Hard to imagine fewer than 4. If we're talking 5 or 6 as a decent estimate, I'd rather the new guy fill 33% - 40% of the scholarships than the guy who didn't work out.

It's actually pretty funny. Not as fun has having a good BB team tho.
It was pre- message board time but I felt similarly in JD Barnett's last couple of years.

Went to a few games, determined we were going nowhere, and kind of tuned out. Nobody really wanted to go with me either. My dad wasn't joining me at games yet due to running the restaurant. Very similar.

Didn't really come back until Tubby's NCAA run.

I think the last couple of decades I was more patient because basketball was a shared activity with my dad and my buddy John McNulty. With them both passing last year the bar is higher for motivation.

I'll bet that was a blast. Glass half full of rocks until end of half, when you beaned a few a few fans? "Shut up, the coach sucks! If I hear you start another cheer I'll go find a bigger rock. "

The question I have with this is more along the lines of is the new AD focusing on all sports or just football? If his focus is only football then the current staff could flounder for a couple more years until he turns his focus there. If he is looking at all sports equally then if the ship don’t get righted soon he may be gone. That said if we don’t beat MVSU and southwest Christian then he might not make it the rest of the year this year.

President Carson mentioned last week that football is our most important sport, which leads me to believe that other areas may not be addressed as urgently.

We know drboobay would have been one of the last rats off the ship. When he got to that point, there probably wasn't another fan within 50 yards of him. With all due respect, I don't think his arm is good enough to endanger the other 50 people attending the game. Now if he could kick something at them.....

Unless the extension explicitly contained changes to buyout terms, it’s hard for me to see us having a new coach any earlier than April 2026.
What's next, you'll tell us that Santa isn't real??

I'm sure Moore would like to avoid making another major coaching change so soon after the football change. On the other hand, if the team continues to struggle, he may have no other choice.

The AAC is not particularly strong this year so the team could bounce back, Konkol could avoid the ax by just being competitive. I have my doubts that we will but it's possible.

I thought Dickson extended Konkol
From 9/5/2024: After leading the Golden Hurricane to an 11-win improvement in his second season at the helm, Tulsa men's basketball head coach Eric Konkol's contract was extended through the 2029 season, University of Tulsa Vice President and Director of Athletics Justin Moore announced today.

I'm not sure about this, I don't know him. What I know is that deal guys like to do deals, boxers like to fight, surgeons like to cut people up...

And a lot of CEOs like to bring in their own team. He very well might prefer to clear the decks and go with his own guys. Tho he might not be able to.

Don't get me wrong. I wish no I'll will on the staff or team and would be delighted if a switch flips and they run to the top of the conference. Manning's second season was like that.

They just need to prove it before I can expend much emotional energy or time.

Just as you, I don’t see it as impossible that we could have a turn around by time conference play rolls around, but it seems that would hinge on the successful return of Garcia. Not having an inside out threat, it’s been far too easy for opponents to extend their defense and challenge every shot. Even in a dramatically weaker American, No Garcia=No Chance…

Konkol admitted that the extension was crafted by Rick Dickson before he retired. Moore signed off on it. Not sure why it was so important to extend him at that time. Head scratcher.
