Tulsa Receivers Johnson and Stokes Named to Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Watch List
TYLER, Texas –– The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award recognizes the nation’s top offensive player with ties to the state of Texas, and today The University of Tulsa receivers Keenen Johnson, from Alto, Texas, and Keylon Stokes, from Manvel Texas were named to the awards 2019 preseason watch list.
The Tulsa duo combined for 1,103 receiving yards and 6 touchdowns last season. Johnson, a 6’1” two-year starter, had 438 yards receiving and a team-high 4 TDs in 2018, while the 6’0” Stokes led the Hurricane with 41 receptions for 575 yards and added 2 touchdowns.
In his three seasons, Johnson has totaled 108 receptions for 1,282 yards and 6 touchdowns. Stokes has 718 career receiving yards in two seasons, while also adding 832 kickoff return yards and 104 rushing yards.
The award, which began in 2012 and is sponsored by the Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce and SPORTyler, went to Oklahoma quarterback Tyler Murray last year.
Named after 1977 Heisman Trophy-winning running back Earl Campbell, the award recognizes the top offensive player in Division I football who also exhibits the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell: integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community, and tenacity; specifically tenacity to persist and determination to overcome adversity and injury in pursuit of reaching goals.
The nominee must meet one or more of the following criteria: born in Texas and /or graduated from a Texas High School and/or played at a Texas-based junior college of four-year Division I Texas college.
