Tulsa Receivers Johnson and Stokes Named to Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Watch List

TYLER, Texas –– The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award recognizes the nation’s top offensive player with ties to the state of Texas, and today The University of Tulsa receivers Keenen Johnson, from Alto, Texas, and Keylon Stokes, from Manvel Texas were named to the awards 2019 preseason watch list.

The Tulsa duo combined for 1,103 receiving yards and 6 touchdowns last season. Johnson, a 6’1” two-year starter, had 438 yards receiving and a team-high 4 TDs in 2018, while the 6’0” Stokes led the Hurricane with 41 receptions for 575 yards and added 2 touchdowns.

In his three seasons, Johnson has totaled 108 receptions for 1,282 yards and 6 touchdowns. Stokes has 718 career receiving yards in two seasons, while also adding 832 kickoff return yards and 104 rushing yards.

The award, which began in 2012 and is sponsored by the Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce and SPORTyler, went to Oklahoma quarterback Tyler Murray last year.

Named after 1977 Heisman Trophy-winning running back Earl Campbell, the award recognizes the top offensive player in Division I football who also exhibits the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell: integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community, and tenacity; specifically tenacity to persist and determination to overcome adversity and injury in pursuit of reaching goals.

The nominee must meet one or more of the following criteria: born in Texas and /or graduated from a Texas High School and/or played at a Texas-based junior college of four-year Division I Texas college.
 
Montgomery’s Matching Up to $10,000 for Funds Raised This Week to Benefit the Tulsa Walk to End Alzheimer’s

TULSA, Okla. –– Raising awareness and finding a cure for Alzheimer’s is dear to the hearts of University of Tulsa head football coach Philip Montgomery and his wife Ashli.

As Tulsa’s Annual Fan Fest takes place this Saturday, the Montgomery’s are hoping to also use this week to raise funds benefiting the Tulsa Walk to End Alzheimer’s. The Montgomery’s will match up to $10,000 in donations received from today thru next Monday, August 19.

The Montgomery’s passion for the fight against Alzheimer’s is in the memory of Ashli’s Grandma Syble and Coach Montgomery’s Granny, who both died with Alzheimer’s Disease. They both continue to strongly advocate and fundraise for the fight in hopes of helping Coach Montgomery’s mom, Sandra Jean Montgomery.

The matching gift by the Montgomery’s is their way of jump-starting the giving, encouraging participation, and kicking off the celebration that culminates with this year’s Tulsa Walk on September 21st at Veterans Park.

At Saturday’s Fan Fest, fans will have an opportunity to donate to the Walk to End Alzheimer’s and the ability to purchase tickets for the opportunity to win a handmade TU Quilt.

TU’s Annual Alzheimer’s Awareness Game is set for Friday night, Nov. 8, as Tulsa hosts two-time conference champion UCF at H.A Chapman Stadium.
 
Tickets for Tulsa-OSU and Remaining 5 Home Games go on Sale Saturday

TULSA, Okla. –– Single-game tickets for Tulsa’s home opener against Oklahoma State and for the remaining five home contests against Wyoming, Navy, Memphis, UCF and Houston will be on sale this Saturday, Aug. 17, online at TulsaHurricane.com, beginning at 8:30 a.m.

Fans can also purchase tickets beginning Monday, Aug. 19, by calling 918.631.GoTU (4688) or in person at the Donald W. Reynolds Center Athletic Ticket Office on the TU campus, Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Tickets for the Sept. 14, TU-OSU game are priced at $75 for General Admission, End Zone and Blue Zone seating. Gold Zone tickets are $85 and Platinum tickets are priced at $95.

Game tickets for each of the five remaining home contests are priced at $15 (General Admission, End Zone, Blue Zone), $40 (Gold Zone) and $50 (Platinum).

Fans will also have an opportunity to purchase season and mini-plan tickets at this Saturday’s Fan Fest. The annual Fan Fest is FREE to the public and takes place from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. at H.A. Chapman Stadium.

Free Sno-Cones, bounce houses, games for kids, face-painting and food and drinks will be available. Following a team scrimmage, there will be on-field activities for youth from 12-12:30 p.m. and an autograph session from 12:30-1 p.m. The 2019 Tulsa football poster will also be distributed.

There will also be a merchandise sale, CASH ONLY, that will include the sale of authentic game-worn TU football jerseys.

Always loved the fan fest growing up, even though it wasn’t called that.
