By focusing on Harvard and UNC as targets for ending affirmative action, it raises the queston of why those two instutatioins were picked instead of looking at issues issues affecting the vastly larger, total number of college applicants. As the article points out, just 6% of college students attend a college where 25% of the applicants are admitted. Harvard's admit rate is 4% and UNC's is 20%. It's not until one counts in colleges that admit 70% to 80% of applicants that one begins to include issues that may affect a majority of college applicants.

Generally true across the board. Making this an 'Even the Dems' issue just politicizes what should be a non-political discussion. There's an op-ed in the WSJ which is even worse trying to make this into an hysterical, political issue. The very elite colleges affect a very small number of people. Those schools can fill multiple classes which would be indistinguishable on the basis of GPA and AP scores and Boards. With so many applicants who can succeed academically, the admissions staff also has to create a freshman class with a broad representation of majors, field multiple sports teams, publish the school newspaper, play the tuba in the halftime band, etc.etc.. The idea that a kid a with the highest GPA and test scores has a right to pick the college of his choice is fantasy. Yet that's the group complaining that somehow they are losing out when that are tons of colleges offering terrific educations. Much ado over nothing.

Might tell the President this isn’t a a political deal or something to get worked up about. Definitely not “much ado over nothing” to Mr. Biden or the Dems

Found this interesting, even Dems don’t believe colleges should consider race as a basis for admittance.

Race based employment decisions have been illegal since 1991. It was common practice to use race or gender specific norms in selection testing for employment before then. My entire professional life that has been illegal and the Ricci case in 2009 (ish) affirmed and extended it.

So all this consternation about admissions baffles me. Brings education more in line with employment.

Don’t forget many states have already banned what the SCOTUS decision prohibits. At least in theory on paper it has been banned. Including in Florida and California for decades.

“In theory” is the key phrase here. Especially in states like California.
