Scott Sutton Fired

Hinson had Self's players. And no recruiting conditions about tattoos and already being born again, again.
Fair enough. But I think Seals is someone the kids can relate to more than Hinson was. Seals has some things going for him that Hinson didn't, and sans the aforementioned incident, Seals has been an upstanding community member. ORU could do a lot worse than Shea. And I feel they probably will end up doing a lot worse.

The DUI was not an incident. It's a travishamockery that it's even been discussed. You can't even find a record on OSCN. He was illegally stopped. This is America. He won. Not guilty or even an inference.

Ok then. Well, then ORU should have literally no problems with him. If they can get someone better for the amount they plan to spend, so be it.

Don't know that it would matter much to Wilson & company. As long as they remember the incident, that might not get him a second interview, or maybe even a first.

Which proves once again that ORU has been consistently run by an awful administration from its inception.

Isn't drinking prohibited at ORU even if the drinking is lawful?

It's pretty remarkable that a "Christian" school would focus on compliance with the rules as an ends of their own and not be willing to forgive but of course much religion is characterized by its blinding hypocrisy.

Dood it's guilty until proven innocent and then it's what I think and he's guilty /signed most of America these days unfortunately

Note: This is not directed at Aston just needed a mini soapbox of why ORU would use that as a justification to not hire Shea, or anyone else with a similar incident.

I seriously doubt the administration follows those rules as adamantly as they expect the coach to have the his student/athletes & basketball staff follow them.

Drinking at ORU was apparently legal when Oral saw and talked to the 900 foot Jesus.

I would suspect Tom Hankins would be a top candidate for the job. He was the lead assistant for Scott and Barry for years and knows everything about ORU. Current UCO coach.

Sounds like ORU will pay their new coach around $250,000 a year (TW 4/13), Sutton was getting more than $400,000 per as coach after 18 years.

Voice,

What's your take on Dr. Wilson? He seems to be undoing the very mission statement established by Oral. Also....do you think it's possible to win at the D1 level in basketball with such an exclusive criteria for recruits? Scott obviously found it difficult as his slide coincided with Wilson's tenure.

Ugh...I have LOTS of thoughts on all of this. But, I enjoy announcing the games, so I'm going to pass on making comments on the interwebs, on this one.

I'll just say this...I spent a LOT of time talking hoops with Oral and if he were still around, he wouldn't be real happy.

Thank you for the honest response.

A former TU player they should consider is Kyle Blakenship. He's killing it at LSU Shreveport (5 strong years).

So who do they hire? I saw someone mention Gottfried, but I doubt he would even take their call given the alleged budget issues.

A lot of possible names probably make more than what they will pay as assistants. I would look at Steve Woodberry, but I think he's one of those.

Wojcik honestly would fit the profile of no tattoos, but he wouldn't go there and hates Tulsa.

Ben Braun? Has done OK everywhere. Obviously can't recruit most Arab kids. Doubt he would have interest or that they would put up with him.

Buzz Peterson?

James Dickey? I think he would be a homerun, but I don't think they will touch anyone from OSU. Same reason Gottlieb won't get s look or talk to them.

Norm Roberts? I think he has the Steve Robinson career assistant gig down pat.

Terry Evans?

Willis Wilson? Now at Texas A&M CC. They are ok. I doubt he would leave or that they would pay.

It will probably be someone with a Christian affiliated school background. I think they should keep their mind open though.

I think those names are too above the board for ORU. IMO, they have a better shot at one of the many D2 coaches Oklahoma. They probably need to look at coaches who have a good idea about the cultural of the Praying Hands U. There is a pretty good coach just across the border in Springfield, MO. at Drury University. His name escapes me but he's a former OSU asst.and I believe he is from Bartlesville. He lead Drury to the D2 National Championship a few years ago.

From your fun list, I would put my chips on Norm Roberts. Even though things have drastically changed since Norman's previous time at ORU, and can probably earn more as Hollywood's chief hairpiece critic, he seems to be like an ideal fit with his career .342 DI win percentage.

What's John Phillips up to these days? Seems like ORU owns him for funneling top local talent to south Tulsa from (2001-2004).

I don't think ORU will hire anything less than a #1 asst. from a D1 staff. Hiring a former D1 head coach or current D2 HC would make more sense. Also, IMO Shea is likely not ready for such a challenge, a major challenge considering their conference affiliation and more importantly the culture at 81st and Lewis.

If Haith SUCCESSFULLY hangs around at TU another 3-5 years and Shea works his way into the #1 asst. chair, he stands a chance to become head coach of his Alma Mater.

I'm still of the belief that Haith views TU as a destination job. He's had a taste of big time cultural and doesn't seem like he came away thinking bigger is better. His neighbor to the north and new conference mate is a good example of how a coach can take a good job in a good conference and make it great. Of course TU may never pay WSU money, but an argument can be made that 2 mi per at a place where you can win and you really dig might be much better than 4+ mil per at a place where the pressure is intense.

Who's the #1 assistant on the staff now??? The 'not ready for the challenge' line is malarky. As long as you understand the game, understand recruiting, and understand the behind the scenes goings on (Shea was also the Director of Ops for us) you're ready for the big show.

I don't think Haith views Tulsa as a destination job at all. He knows he's lucky that the opportunity was there for him at a historically successful school, but let's not pretend we have the resources that he did at Mizzou or Miami. No one is calling WSU a destination job either. Marshall stayed because he built a good program and because they paid him a junk ton of money to stay.

If I were Shea, I'd be putting in my application at ORU in hopes that when the TU job opens up in a couple years, I'd have the head coaching experience that Tulsa usually looks for. When was the last time Tulsa promoted a current assistant to head coach? I think it would be easier to go the Bill Self route and have a couple decent seasons in a lackluster Summit league than it would be to get the Tulsa gig as an assistant. (Especially if Haith is ousted instead of leaving on his own accord)

I'm not sure you can win at ORU with the current restrictions in place with recruiting. Wilson also appears to be a tyrant to work under. If I'm an assistant coach looking for my first head gig I can't think of a worse place to start given the current circumstances going on at 81st and Harvard. No way I take that job at it's present state.

That's one thing I will agree with. If the admin wasn't so awful I'd love to see Shea go there and be a "coach in waiting" of sorts for us. But I would hate to see him fail just because people are going to hold him back.

Could someone sue the university regarding title whatever funding over this religious test?

That's why Carter insisted there wasn't a religious test after it leaked on Twitter.

No. Because one's Christian faith is front and center as part of the mission of the university, they have an exemption to certain questions and requirements regarding religion in terms of admission as a student or requirements for being hired. Baylor has the same exemption and can ask about your personal statement of faith as part of its employment interview.

I don't think it's as black and white as you are making it out to be. A creative plaintiff's attorney might have a way to bring a claim. They are subject to a number of federal laws. I think all you need to look at is how Carter, an attorney, tried to poison the well on that issue during the press conference. They are concerned that it got out.

Part of the issue is that they weigh how "Christian" someone is. And part of it is that outwardly use faith in determining eligibility for a scholarship.

I think in terms of public policy, they should be able to do that. But there's a reason that sheet was released and a reason they went into damage control on it. It's an interesting issue. I wouldn't take that case, but I know some who would. I had a long car drive this week and thought about it some. There's something odd going on with this.

Drinking may be prohibited, but I sure drank a lot of beers at Joeys with the ORU coeds back in the day.

Before curfew I'm sure.

My buddy's got a little tipsy finishing the mass as alter boys while training for the priesthood. I guess that wouldn't be approved of by Billy bob.

Richard wouldn't have approved either, but I'll bet he'd drink a toast to the kids he didn't approve of.

I worked at the Champlin gas station at 71st & S. Lewis in the early 70's. We always had our big BEER deliveries every Friday for the ORU students!

I'll bet that back in the day that Oral and Richard didn't just have milk in their golf carts at Southern Hills.

And they didn't have milk in their briefcase when they got out of the private jet to talk to a top level recruit and his mother. If not for another school having a bigger briefcase, they might have gotten the recruit with their milk. Lol

My fav was seeing Richard swig down scotch as fast as he could on a late night flight from DFW to Tulsa. He was in the last row of first class and got on late so no one saw him. But I was in the row ahead and smiling amusingly at his attempt at covert drinking.
