From the Cleburne Times Review...
TULSA — After being redshirted his freshman year with the University of Tulsa, Cleburne’s Reggie Robinson II is now in the mix for a starting role for the Golden Hurricane after strong performances during spring practices and at Tulsa’s spring game on Saturday.
Robinson, a two-time selection to the all-district and All-Johnson County football teams for the Jackets in 2013-14 and 2014-15, is in the running for a starting role for the Golden Hurricane, Tulsa Associate Head Coach and Co-Defensive Coordinator Brian Norwood said.
“He’s coming along well,” Norwood said. “He’s a young guy so spring has been real big for him. He’s a talented kid. He’s physically gifted with length and speed, and he’s an intelligent kid. It’s been a good spring for him. Like a lot of the young guys, it’s been a learning experience for him.”
Robinson was a two-way player for the Jackets at receiver on offense and cornerback and safety on defense, but he’s been slotted at corner back for Tulsa since he signed with the Golden Hurricane. Norwood said Robinson has done a good job of learning Tulsa’s defensive concepts.
“He has an opportunity to have a major role with what we do defensively from a team standpoint,” Norwood said. “He’s really picked up the concepts. Because we’re young in a lot of spots defensively, we’re working on fundamental things and he did a really nice job of picking up all the concepts we have defensively. We were pleased to see his progress across the board.”
Norwood added that after a redshirt year of growing physically and learning how to be a Division I student-athlete, having a full spring and full summer under his belt will be huge moving into his redshirt freshman season in the fall.
“We expect him to match and exceed all of his God-given ability,” Norwood said. “He’s a talented kid and we feel like he can really help us. We’re looking forward to him having a great summer. Being young it’s just taking things one step at a time. This will be his summer after his first spring where he’ll go into it with a lot more knowledge. Also he’ll go into it with a lot more understanding on what his role is.”
According to Tulsa Football’s website, the Golden Hurricane have eight cornerbacks listed on the 2016 roster — three redshirt freshman, two redshirt juniors, one true junior and two true seniors. Norwood said Robinson is in the running for a starting role if he continues his progression.
“Right now, he’s doing a great job competing against guys,” Norwood said. “He’s been running with our No. 1 corners the last couple weeks and that’s a plus for him. We’ve had a couple guys who were injured coming back. We feel like we have a nice group of corners and that will provide some competition at the position. We have some veteran guys who will provide leadership and competition also. It’s a good group.
“Cornerbacks Coach [Aaron] Fletcher does a tremendous job with them. Him and Reggie, as well as all the guys, have a tremendous relationship and they respond well to his coaching. We’re just looking forward to Reggie continuing to have a great offseason and having visions in mind of him being a key contributor when we go into the fall.”
Tulsa, which competes in the American Athletic Conference, went 6-7 in its first season under Head Coach Philip Montgomery, who was previously the offensive coordinator at Baylor from 2006-2014 under Art Briles.
The Golden Hurricane lost to Virginia Tech, 55-52, in the 2015 Camping World Independence Bowl in December.
Tulsa is scheduled to open the 2016 season on Sept. 3 against San Jose State, then the Golden Hurricane will travel to Columbus, Ohio for a showdown at Ohio State.
